Jones was giving the key note speech at a Washington Institute For Near East Policy when he told this joke, the point of which seems to be that Jews are cruel, greedy merchants.
Just imagine the howls of mock liberal indignation that would result if Rush Limbaugh or any other conservative had told this joke.

It's hard for the effete elitist scum hiding behind their ivy covered walls to appreciate reality. I think the old adage, "Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes." is especially applicable to the college brained libtard set because they have no real experience, but feel empowered by their "book knowledge and certificates of higher learning" to cast dispersion upon those who have spent their lives engaged in the very real struggle of survival.
On a biographical note, I graduated with several degrees and during my time in college had to deal with plenty of "professional libtard" educators who had no real world experience... which brings me to the other old adage, "Those who can... do. First of all, it's not really a question of whether it's funny or not. It's an issue of the hypocrisy that someone in an "annointed" administration to get away with jokes like this, in an official capacity, while those of the "unacceptable" political class would have gotten skewered for it. You point out that this guy was a general under Bush - if he had made the same joke 3 years ago it would have been a major scandle, evidence that Bush is evil, arrogant, insensitive, blah, blah, blah. If he told it today, but Arabs or Muslims were the butt of the joke, he would probably have been forced to resign before the day was out. But Jews and Christians are fair game, and Obama gets a pass either way.

Overall though even though I chuckle at Flanders (The Simpsons) and shows like that, I think that it is all about context. I don't think it was necessarily the right place to say it which makes the "joke" unfunny, untimely and stupid.

I too (I am not Jewish though) have heard that joke many times in a few other forms as well. If told right it is funny. There is a Chinese version that does not involve a tie but has to do with hookers. Same theme and same joke- just with different players and some sex acts that I won't be able to type out here.
Take this following joke, which I get and know the theme, but do not find to be overly funny in the least:
"A Mexican, an Arab,
and a Texas girl are
in the same bar.
When the Mexican
finishes his beer,
he throws his glass
in the air, pulls out
his pistol, and shoots
the glass to pieces.

our glasses are so

Again that is a recycled form of another version that is as old as time. Like the 'Yo Mama' jokes of grade school days. This version ends with people getting shot just because they are illegal. That is uncool, arrest and deport illegals, yes. Shoot to kill only because they are illegal: no.
In the case of self defense or property protection if an illegal is in the act of doing a crime: then yes. That is so only because of the crime/threat to life and not because the criminal in that case is an illegal. No special slant either way on the immigration status of the criminal in that scenario.
I toss that joke in to make a point: If someone told that joke in AZ right now, funny or unfunny as you see it, that would be MAJOR bad timing and cause some drama. Freedom of speech? Sure, 100% okay to say it and say it any time. Just know the setting and the result of what you say.
Since that Mexican/Arab joke can be taken to have a right wing slant such a public telling would get lambasted by the left wing media. It would be held up as a case of racial hatred and all that is wrong with the state of affairs, the sky is falling etc.
With Obama's recent stance to basically tell Israel to go f*ck off and that they can roast in Atomic fires supplied by Iran while we 'balance our other interests' makes a joke like that 'Jewish tie' one a major case of bad timing.
I heard no intentional malice in that joke when it was told. The stage picked and the time chosen to tell it were poorly thought out however.

I am a Jew, I heard that joke before, and I thought it was funny. Not the way he told it, but I laughed when I first heard it. Jews have a sense of humor, we don't get insulted over insignificant crap like this. Insulting Netanyahu, and taking the side of enemies over our friends, now that pisses me off.

I concur with you on both counts. I see the humor. Damn funny joke. The absurdity that Jews are somehow so much more greed driven than any other ethnic group is remarkable. All types, all kinds of people have the capacity for greed. Some people develop skills that aren't so easy to make fun of.
