Oprah Winfrey flaunts her wealth in college commencement address

Oprah's rich, you're not. End of discussion.[/caption]

Oprah made the commencement address at Duke University yesterday. She gave an address for which any conservative would have been skewered by the liberal press:

“It’s great to have a nice home. It’s great to have nice homes! It’s great to have a nice home that just escaped the fire in Santa Barbara,” she told the students. “It’s great to have a private jet. Anyone that tells you that having your own private jet isn’t great is lying to you.”

Sure, she went on to say “You haven’t completed the circle of success until you help someone else move to a higher ground and get to a better place.” Blah, blah, blah.

The Duke graduates were terribly disappointed with Oprah’s address. When she started talking about helping someone else, they thought she was going to give away free cars to everyone in the audience again.

Sorry, Duke graduates. Since Oprah didn’t come through with a freebie, it looks like you’ll have to move to Massachusetts to get that free car.

  • Wow- you've really taken that out of context - Oprah didn't brag - she said that it is nice to have nice things - if you're going to say that isn't true for most of the U.S. - you have your head DEEP in the sand. Prove that it's not a true statement - and while you're at it - why don't you listen to the other part of the speech - the part where she talks about success as defined by doing something for someone - read/listen to her examples. I've been neutral on Oprah - until that speech - I thought it was awesome.

    • Yet she and her beloved President Obama plan to make it impossible for people to rise out of the middle class and have nice things - earn that mansion or the private jet. Earn a trip to Italy. They have made their millions, now they make climbing up the ladder impossible for the next generation. They are putting a ceiling on the ladder of wealth - didn't you hear, it is 250,000 - any more and you will be taxed back down the ladder a few rungs!

They are punishing the rest of us with taxes that will exceed any that we have ever known. Even those of us who will never earn 250,000 in one year are shaking in our boots. There isn't enough money in the higher brakets to pay for all their pipe dreams. They will have to hit us sooner or later. The moderately well off - the small business owners, even people like my husband and I who are far below their claimed ceiling will be destroyed by the taxes that are coming. LOOK M, she is one of the ring leaders of this fiasco. America will be permanently poorer when they are done destroying her.
She is a prime example, M, of the rich fool who loves flaunting her wealth but doesn't really give a darn if the rest of us ever have a chance to flaunt ours.
As for that second thought of her speech..I could care less! well, big surprise, she tells everyone how nice owning things are and then remembers to mention generosity and compassion. Big Deal!

Don't listen to fools like her, M. If you want spiritual instruction or to consider how to be a good person, Read the Jesus Christ, Lord Buddha and Socrates - the real masters of wisdom. Compassion a good idea? - those men lives lives of passionate compassion and none of them had private jets and multiple mansions.
Her drivel isn't worth used cat litter!

  • Well that is a scary picture.
I consider Oprah a prime example of everything (not the only one!) that is wrong with this civilization at this time. One name celebrities (even Alexander the Great went by three names!) LOL Rich people who love their possessions, positions, political power, ability to speak out, multiple mansions, personal jets, etc, yet, who want the Middle Class (those of us who are getting by but always on the edge of calamity ) to pay higher and higher taxes and worry about the survival the ground squirrel or the spotted owl as if it was our own little pet.
Shallowness as a professional calling, even a matter of pride.
I do not begrudge her success. She earned it. I despise her for being an insincere, unthinking foolish woman. When Obama bankrupts this country and plunges us into third world stasis she will be partly to blame.
Most of all ? I fear her emotionalism and power over my own sex (gender). She isn't teaching people to think - she is teaching them to emote - and women as a gender/sex do not need to emote,MORE, they need to think, MORE.
Example of thoughts most women don't have: If they raise my taxes on heating oil will my family & me freeze this winter? If they raise taxes on chips and soda what will that do to my food bill--What will that do to the price of eating out? If I pay higher taxes doesn't that mean I will have LESS money for other things like food, clothing and gas to get work?
