Revise the tourist maps: PETA wants to rename San Francisco’s Tenderloin district

Just as we were thinking, “You know, we haven’t heard anything stupid from PETA lately,” the animal rights wackos have plumbed new depths of inanity.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (which technically, should be PFTETOA, not PETA) sent a letter to the mayor of San Francisco requesting that the city’s Tenderloin District be renamed the “Tempeh District.”

tenderloin-district
How about if they called it Homeless Town or Shopping Cart City or Result-of-Liberal-Policies-ville?

In case you’re as unfamiliar with tempeh as we were, Mrs Editor confidently states that it’s a traditional Indonesian soy dish. (Looks like all those hours watching the Food Channel have finally paid off.)

NBC Bay Area has the letter and the story:

“I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 2 million members and supporters, including thousands in the Bay Area, with an idea that could help revitalize the struggling Tenderloin district: rename it the “Tempeh District.” By discarding an outdated moniker that evokes the horrors of the meat trade, you’ll be sending a strong message to progressive businesses and health-conscious residents that this neighborhood is ready for a fresh start.”

The letter goes on to explain how tempeh is healthier and cruelty-free, while tenderloin is full of suffering.

Reiman goes on to offer other suggestions if Tempeh doesn’t have the right ring to it,

“If Tempeh doesn’t excite you, how about Granola Flats or Seitan’s Lair? You could even run a contest to choose a veggie moniker.”

We’d open this contest up to our readers, but we’re pretty sure you lunatics would all come up with names like “Tube Steak Town.”

We’re not gonna go there.

  • What a bunch of weenies!
Since nothing is off limits with these morons, they might as well forgo Pacific Time and become "Mountain Time"...

In keeping with the historical "horrors of the meat trade", I'm gonna go with Meat Market.

  • I had some friends who lived in the T-loin for a while, heck, my mom even lived there until 1979 or 1980, I think. The place is a cockroach magnet, big, big ones. Why not name it something appropriate like: Roach Heights, or Roach Haven, or Cockroach Run. I mean, the reason I say this is, I remember seeing some cockroaches there that were big enough to domesticate! Could be the beginnings of another constituency for the local politicians.

      • A cockroach is smarter than a chicken and a chicken is smarter than anyone that joins groups like PETA. How does that evolution theory thing work? Did the chicken come before the egg or did the PETA person come before the cockroach? I keep forgetting which is which.

    • If you were to domesticate one of those cockroaches you would surely run afoul of PETI (People for the Ethical Treatment of Insects). Is there anyone among us who doubts that such an organization may well exist in San Francisco?

  • Ah but is a liberal as smart as chicken ?
To a San Fransicko liberal, "chicken" means something entirely different than it does to the rest of us.

Sorry, you beat me to it. You know this is a pretty stupid idea, so I'm guessing that the city streets department is already having the new signs made up.

  • A while back ( maybe last year ) a peta rep was on our local talk radio , discussing Peta's protest of McDonald's chicken nuggets. They stated that how the chickens were treated , then killed , was murder . Of course the calls that came in were not in her favor.

It then flew out of control , when the Pets women ( would never use the term Lady ) , asked one of the callers , " Would you do this to your pet dog ? , Because a chicken is as smart as a dog .

From that point forward , just about all the calls that came in , challenged her point that " A chicken is as smart as a dog ".

When I called in later and asked her if a chicken was as smart as a baby , my call was terminated. Killing babies == GOOD , killing chickens == BAD.

My primary point was the statement " A chicken is as smart as a dog".

    • Carol Doda, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Didn't she run for mayor of SanFran at one point way back in the 70's or something, maybe assembly, city council? As a young soldier just out of Ft. Ord back then, I'm sure I had the 'pleasure' of visiting her 'fine dining' (beer and pretzels) establishment a time or two, or maybe more...it's hazy.
