San Franciscans will no longer be able to beat their meat on Mondays

san francisco vegetarian day

San Francisco, a city long known for its fruits and nuts, has declared every Monday as Vegetarian Day.

PublicCEO.com has the meat of the story:

A resolution was passed in San Francisco declaring every Monday as “Vegetarian Day” to urge restaurants, grocery stores, and schools to offer plant based options for residents.

The 2009 report from World Bank environmental advisers, Goodland and Anhang, called “Livestock and Climate Change,” reveals that farmed animals and their byproducts are responsible for at least 32.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.

Goodland and Anhang stated that replacing animal products with soy-based and other alternatives would be the best strategy for reversing climate change.

We checked with StraightDope.com, an authority that seemed appropriate in a story about San Francisco. It said, “The problem is the body’s inability to fully digest the complex carbohydrates so abundant in the vegetarian diet and the consequent excessive production of gases such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane.”

In other words, eat like a cow, fart like a cow.

Therefore, San Francisco’s theory that it can reduce greenhouse gasses by putting humans on a vegetarian diet to reduce the number of cows in the world is self-defeating. They’ll merely replace farting cows with farting humans.

And in the future, San Francisco’s politicians will be full of hot air and its citizens will be full of gas.

  • Did yall notice There are ads on this page from google for vegetarial recipies? Ironic, don't you think? Anyway- I think I was misunderstood. I am not FOR this ordinance. And Kimmy, Givcen the cuyrrent prevalenc e of heart diseas hypertension and diabetes, those eating habits ARE affecting the rest of us. We are paying for that extensive health care. But I believe it is the individuals right and responsibility to care for himself. The government shoul dnot be involved.

    • Eating habits in all reality only affects the person that eats. However it is true it is not right to pay for healthcare for someone who does overeat foods that causes diseases and that SHOULD change. That is why I don't like this healthcare bill. It is the individual to decide how they want to live their lives as they do not affect others and others should not pay for their decisions, with that said such suggestions that leave the door open for ordinances makes it hard then for others not to become involved into the individual rights and responsibilities of people to take care of themselves. Then taxes will be levied to enforce these ordinances and of course it affects the choices of people as they go out in the street, and then think of how easy it would be to actually legislate what people cook in their homes... it is a nightmare ready to happen.

    • Society ALWAYS pays for other's habits. Rural mail service, rural electricity, rural telephone, rural hospitals, etc. But, let's not stop at eating habits, how 'bout we tax young teens for having sex and not taking care of the fetus thereby having a preemie (sp)? Getting out of bed increases your risk, how 'bout we tax alarm clocks? Where does it end? I'm overweight and my DR says I will die young (whatever that means), probably of a heart attack. That will cost y'all less that keeping me alive intil I'm 90 with countless operations for every little ailment, replaced joints, SS payments, Medicare expenses, etc. Therefore, I propose we tax the healthy because they will cost society more in teh long run.

      • Well, deathcare is taking care of the "keeping you alive til you are 90" bit....it will be the blue or pink pill for you (after you meet with the death panels) WAY before you start sucking up resources that will be given to others for abortions but those resources won't be to keep YOU alive longer....no longer will this country be worrrying about keeping people "alive"...unless they are politicians who are needed to continually vote the commie party line. (see Teddy Kennedy and Robert Byrd)

And the answer to the question: when will it ever end? It won't. The government never shrinks, it grows like the Borg, and it REALLY IS THE BORG.

Resistence is futile...hmmmmmmmm.....got news for you whores in DC, we are coming to take our government back, and you are going to be in the "fununemployment" lines...GUARANTEED!

      • Therefore, I propose we tax the healthy.

I'm recovering from surgery...how long before I'm concidered "healthy" again???

  • *sighs* Nanny state... Government telling me what to eat is not going to fly with me honey. The problem also is that it is putting it in a situation where PRIVATE businesses have to comply with this... It is ridiculous. If the GOVT wants to have a veggie day fine all govt employees and places can have it if they feel like it, but to put this on the shoulders of private businesses is stupid. San Francisco is out of control, California is out of control.

Point of order - so far it's only a "suggestion".

Note first paragraph - "A resolution was passed in San Francisco declaring every Monday as “Vegetarian Day” to urge restaurants, grocery stores, and schools to offer plant based options for residents.

      html

      • A governmental suggestion always comes before an actual order. It is always been like that. You can say they are testing the waters to see if there will be compliance and the idiots that do comply will make it easier for an actual law. There are times when some ordinances are truly for the good of the community (like no smoking in tigh indoor areas, etc), but "suggesting" a vegetarian day when eating habits affect NO ONE other than the one that eats opens the door for so much more. People need to realize that when you leave the door opened for governmental suggestions that can lead to outright control, they cannot then be surprised when the government takes over. We cannot let the govt get not one inch more.

        • And as we've said before, the government is the ONLY entity that can LEGALLY use force to accomplish its goals.

      • And if you read the entire paragraph, it encourages restaurants, etc to offer a veggie OPTION. Nowehre does it say you can't eat meat on those days. This will undergo market forces. If they can't sell enough veggie dishes, they will be dropped from th meny. If they can, it will be retained. Evreytime you eat spaghetti with marinara sauce, or mac and cheese, guess what? YOu are eating a vegetarial meal. Let them eat whatever they want, and let me eat whatever I want. Period.

        • Yes, but it is called Vegetarian Day, not Encouraging a Vegetarian Lifestyle Day or Encouraging Healthier Eating Options day. That is the problem, it leaves the door open for so much control. It may not be so much right now, but it is the POSSIBILITIES that are scary to me.

Going from a suggestion to an actual ordinance doesn't take that much time. Only when the market is affected would the govt may back off, but then again they may not. I think this is perhaps a testing the waters situation to see how much they can get away with.

I think that the govt should not be in the business of encouraging vegetarian options for people.

  • Yep, Deb. I think the best solution for man made climate change, global warming, global cooling, whichever handle best fits today would be for all those whose religion is on of the three, or all three to just stop breathing. Life would certaintly be better for the rest of us.

  • What is voluntary today will be mandatory tomorrow. "Meatless Monday" is the foot in the door as the Nanny State decides what we eat, what we drink, what we drive and how we heat our homes. Eventually the Nanny States will morph into the Nazi State and dictate where we work, what we think and whether we live or die.

    Meanwhile, pork chops tonight!

    • Since we all have to eat in order to live, it won't be long before these fools declare that "having access to food" is a "right", and they will make their move.
When the federal government takes over the entire food production business, farming, and the grocery store business, so that "everyone has access to affordable food" and to protect us from the "greedy grocery stores and greedy farmers and big corporations", then meat and other products will be severely rationed. That's how they will force this on us.
You only get 1 lb of meat per week, 4 loafs of bread, and 8 oz of milk. You say you want to go to another grocery store? There aren't any! The ones that weren't nationalized had to shut down because they couldn't meet all the silly gub'mint regulations. And just like public skools, you can only go to the assigned food depot according to where you live. They'll just tell you to take your ration, sit down, shut up and be grateful...you cannot hoard all the food for yourself or stock up your pantry, since the rest of the people standing in line have to eat too.
Anybody here old enough to remember the reports about long lines to get bread and other basic necessities in the old Soviet Union?

They're trying the same thing here with healthcare first, though.

      • This will go hand-in-hand with healthcare -- we will only get the gov't mandated "healthy" foods so healthcare costs will be lower. They do know what is best for us you know. They've already started to take over food production .... no trans-fats, no salt, etc.

    • I wonder. If Obama gets his bill through his Congress, (bought and paid for), the one about 2 years of mandatory national service, will Monday be vegan day? Or maybe it will be vegan food ONLY on the National Service Facilities?

    • Honestly I think I super dislike Nancy worse than Hillary. I never liked Hillary, but I think Skany Pelosi is far worse.

    • Her name is Nancy , Hopefully come November , we will be taking a chunk off her rump . REMEMBER NOVEMBER

  • "Vegetarian" The settler's word for bad hunter who can't fish either.

Watch out, at the Dee Mac home it will be Ribeye Mondays from now on!!! Thick, Juicy, rubbed and aged, then grilled to a light pink with a crisp brown crust of fat on the edge. I might steam a little asparagas as garnish, but baby, that green stuff will kill you.

    • You makin' me hungry!!!!

Note: We should eat vegetables, however we are not herbivores we are omnivours and we should be able to eat anything in moderation. Besides denying people something will just want to make people crave for it even more.

        • It is a non-deniable fact that EVERYONE who eats vegetables on a daily basis dies. They are all either dead, or on their way there. Therefore, by liberal standards of "thinking," vegetables are deadly, and should be banned.

  • The human body inhales a mix of gasses, epecially oxygen. We exhale Carbon Dioxide. I have the perfect solution to global warming-stop breathing. Of course that would also eliminate greenhouse gasses from cars, airplanes, factories, etc. What? Nobody likes that idea? Here's another. Put a sock in the mouths of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Sharpton, Jackson, the "rev." Wright, all politicians. PETA and everyone else who makes a living ranting about the way the rest of us should live. That should stop global warming right there, and protect the planet for centuries.
