The Obama administration has now officially descended to a level one step above the old Conehead skit on Saturday Night Live. The State Department has decided that those people you used to call your mother and father should now be designated “Parent One” and “Parent Two.”
Beldar and Prymatt, the Conehead “Parental Units,” will sleep well tonight.
Fox News has details of your antithetical antecedents:
The words “mother” and “father” will be removed from U.S. passport applications and replaced with gender neutral terminology, according to the State Dept.
“The words in the old form were ‘mother’ and ‘father’,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Passport Services Brenda Sprague. “They are now ‘parent one’ and ‘parent two.’”
A statement on the State Department website noted: “These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.”
Sprauge said the decision to remove the traditional parenting names was not an act of political correctness.
No, of course, it wasn’t. Perish the thought. That had absolutely nothing to do with it.
“We find that with changes in medical science and reproductive technology that we are confronting situations now that we would not have anticipated 10 or 15 years ago,” she said.
Gay rights groups are hailing the decision.
In the words of Gomer Pyle, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.”
“Changing the term mother and father to the more global term of parent allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn’t recognize their family,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council.
Her organization lobbied the government for several years to remove the words from passport applications.
In other news, a State Department spokesman announced that passports will longer designate an individual’s sex. “Sexual identity is a fluid, ambiguous situation,” the spokesman said, “So in the future American passports will simply designate their holders as ‘human.’”
We made up that last paragraph, but would it surprise you to read that announcement in some future State Department press release?

So, how are we supposed to keep from offending the parental unit that gets listed as #2?
After I laughed, I realized something about your post that is serious... Who gets to mandate which parent is one or two? Is one always going to be the Father and two always going to be Mother...? So the Mother would be the secondary parent? Even if she is the primary caretaker?
What if it is the woman that makes the money in the house? Or what is the Father is the primary caretaker of the child(ren)?
Numbers... for bad or good have the tendency to determine what is better and what is worst. Obviously number one has many connotations that even if not intended by the idiots involved would surely offend (or worst) parents of ANY kind.
Seriously is the woman that actually gave birth to the child number one or two? If she is number one how does that affect the lesbian partner who chose not to have children? And what if she does have a child? She is number one in that child's paperwork but not number one in the partner's natural child's paperwork? How does that work for cohesiveness (sp?) in the family structure?
I mean have they thought all the way through even through the unintended results?
It is a mess. Sure sure so sometimes there are two mommies and two daddies... or whatever but all they have to do is put it this way. If the male is not married to the female still put his name as the father but obviously he is not going to be the parent. If they want to make an addition to the documentation* as list all parents or list all caretakers for the child, I guess that would work well the lesbian partner's name would still be in the documentation as the parent/caretaker of the child even if not the blood child. Obviously there is ONLY ONE Mother there the one that actually had the baby and the child came from a man regardless of the circumstances and that would make him the Father. If they want to have additional space to put names of legal parents or caretakers (and it doesn't even have to be for gays and so on it could be aunt or whatever) fine. If the father is not known (anonymous donor) leave the damn thing blank... what is the problem? **

Implying then, that you could be anything other than "human" on your passport?
After gay marriage becomes the court ordered law of the land, bigamy will be the next step. The state department is ahead of the game, now they will just have to add more numbers as needed.
Then again, the courts might rule another way. With singe parent households so common, the courts may rule them to be standard. If the hetero-normative stereotype of the 2 parent household were eliminated, children of one parent household would no longer be made to feel inferior. If there are 2 biological donors to pick from the government could use the vast quantity of information they keep on us to pick the best one.
Who says parenthood should even have any connection to genetics anymore? Each new child could be turned over to the government at the government owned hospital, this is after Obamacare does away with private owned health care. Then sorting though the records, including college transcripts and political donations, a proper parent could be assigned.
Once you start to do away with the natural order of things, who knows where you will stop?

Sooo, Let me get this (mother) is Parent 1 and (father) is Parent 2 or vis a versa. Then if it's let's say two dudes (or two women) with children it would say Parent 2 and Parent 2 or Parent 1 and Parent 1 on the Passports; Right? I'm just trying to understand the logic in this.
