Joe’s latest stunt is posting each day’s funniest mugshots online so the public can vote for Mug Shot of the Day.

Here’s how Joe explains it:

Numerous people are booked into our jails each day. Vote for the mug shot you like best then see if your choice makes mug shot of the day tomorrow! You can change your mind as often as you like but your final vote will be the only one cast. Tell us what you think!

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office website gets 800,000 hits a day. We say make it 800,001.

We’d like every IHateTheMedia.com reader to click on the link and vote for Benjamin Luna.

We’re behind you all the way, Ben. And we’re behind you, too, Sheriff Joe.

This is an absolutely true, personal story from the editor of IHateTheMedia.com:

I (a pronoun rarely used at IHTM) had to make a court appearance on November 6, 2008, the day after the presidential election. A group of about twenty other defendants and witnesses gathered on the benches in the courthouse hallway. One of them, a young black man, was giddy with excitement.

“I’ve never voted in my life until yesterday,” he said. “I’m not a Democrat. I’m not a Republican. I’m nothing. But I voted for Barack Obama yesterday because Obama’s going to take care of all the brothers.”

He gleefully related this story over and over to anyone who made the mistake of sitting next to him. Or even near him.

The doors finally swung open and the baliff ushered us all in and showed us to seats in the back of the courtroom.

The first case called was that of the happy young black man. The smile disappeared off his face as he approached the judge, who peered menacingly over his glasses. “You have quite a record here, son,” he said. “Possession of drugs. Drug dealing. Armed robbery. Assault. Breaking and entering.”

The young black man began fidgeting.

“But today’s your lucky day,” the judge said. “The district attorney’s office screwed up and all the charges have been dismissed.”

The young man let out an excited hoot, spun around with a huge smile on his face, looked at all of us and said, “See, I told you. Obama’s already working for the brothers.”

We all roared with laughter. Even the stern judge.

Apparently not all Obama backers are so lucky. Someone sent us this collection of mug shots that all feature one thing in common.

Are the photos funny? We plead guilty and throw ourselves on the mercy of the court.

(Note: we tried to balance this story with some McCain voters’ mug shots, but couldn’t find any. None. Turns out SmokingGun.com has been searching for them, too, but the best they’ve been able to find is one anti-Obama shirt.)
