A referendum, launched by a coalition of non-governmental groups, religious authorities and centre-left parties, pushed to have the weapons stored in armouries instead.

The initiative also aimed to abolish the practice of allowing those on military service to keep their government-issue assault rifles even after they leave the army.
But the coalition failed to secure the votes of both a majority of the population and cantons.
Final results showed that 20 out of 26 cantons were against while 56.3 per cent of the population rejected the initiative.
For any initiative to pass, the twin support of a majority of citizens and of cantons is required….
Amnesty International also issued a statement saying that it is “regrettable that the majority of the Swiss population did not find that the place of a weapon is not at home.”

Most Swiss voting in a referendum have approved the easier expulsion of foreigners convicted of serious crimes such as murder, according to preliminary computer projections released on Sunday by national television.
In the latest sign of growing hostility to immigration in the Alpine state, 53 percent of voters accepted a proposal to deport automatically foreigners convicted of crimes including rape or trafficking in drugs or people.
Of course, Reuters reports that those supporting the ballot measure are “right wing.” But the political affiliation of those opposed to the law is left mysteriously unmentioned.
… The initiative was put forward by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which has played on rising fear about immigration in recent years to become the country’s biggest political movement.
Posters for the SVP’s proposal show a group of white sheep kicking a black sheep off the Swiss flag. They first ran when the SVP was collecting signatures for the referendum.
Last year the Swiss passed another “right wing” law that outlawed the construction of new minarets. That law was not popular with guys named Mohammed.
“First the Muslims and minarets, now criminals,” said Mohammed, a native of Lebanon who recently received his Swiss passport. “We’re not all criminals.”

The country is crawling with assault rifles. More than 600,000 of them.
All Swiss men aged 21 to 32 men serve in Switzerland’s militia. They’re each issued an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they’re required to keep in their homes.
After fulfilling mandatory military service, Swiss men then serve in something very similar to the U.S. National Guard. They’re issued bolt rifles and are still required to train occasionally. Women aren’t required to own guns, but they’re strongly encouraged to do so.
