Actually, I think it is very funny. She thinks she has to respond to or rebutt every post on the board (just as Sam did). It's the right wing spin doctors who changed it to "shovel ready jobs," and implied that Obama had promised an instant fix for the unemployment problem. In fact, Obama warned us, right in that same talk, that recovery was going to be slow, stimulus bill or no stimulus bill.

We need politicians willing to not worry about party platforms and work on what is right for this country and ignore other countries and the media. We need to make it so that even with turkeys like reid and peel o zee are elected, they have no real power.
I also believe we need to pray and fast. I know not everyone is a Christian here and may not agree with me, but I seriously think that is a big part of it.

Unemployment benefits allow people to survive while looking for another job. Which means that they can still use those goods and services that keep companies going.
That doesn't translate into "good for the economy," as you're claiming----but it does help prevent the economy from collapsing still further.
Now, suppose you explain why you feel it is better for the economy if unemployed people are left to fall into poverty, ending up homeless or malnourished, while the businesses they used to patronize end up losing customers. Because that seems to be what you're implying.

Actually Olivia, there is a huge problem with your train of thought. And it's purely economical. You mention that welfare is good because it keeps the economy going. This is entirely false.
Man 1 sells lemonade. He makes 5 dollars a day, on average selling to 10 people. Man 2 sells Baby Back Ribs. He makes 10 dollars a day, on average selling to 10 people. Man 3 used to make 5 dollars a day, selling baskets, but no longer does because people have ceased to like his baskets. Now. So this man doesn't starve while he is unemployed. We give him 1.50 so he can buy 1 rack of baby back ribs and 1 lemonade to drink a day. This money comes from Man 1 at a rate of 50c, and from Man 2, at a rate of $1.00. (progressive tax brackets). We introduce man 4 into equation. Man 4 looks at scenario. Welfare has removed incentive for man 4 to attempt to sell product. Now another 50c is taken from man 1, and a dollar from man 2. Now, because of these losses, Man 1 and Man 2 increase their prices to try to get around tax. Now more tax money is systematically being taken from them, causing currency devaluation as there is a drop in the buying power of a dollar.
The "economy" is simply the transactions between everyone in a market. It is organic, and incentivizing anything besides free market principles will only hamper and destroy the economy. Once upon a time man cared for another, then that duty was relieved from them by the wonderful presidents of FDR and LBJ, your heroes. That's a nice pat theory, but in actual practice can you name ANY successful industrialized nation today that doesn't have any social programs? I can't. In fact, most of the nations that don't have any social programs, that I can think of, happen to be third world countries, where a handful of people have most of the wealth and power, and the poorer citizens are trapped in a dog-eat-dog existence. Not what I want for our country or our people. You, of course, may feel differently.
You see, the big flaw in your argument is the assumption that Man 3 can land a job that makes him self supporting, but doesn't want to. That's what's known as an oversimplification and a stereotype, both of which are enormously popular right wing tactics of late. The unpalatable fact is that social programs help a great many people BECOME self-sufficient. But you don't hear their stories in our profit driven media, because most TV viewers would rather hear outrageous stories about "welfare queens," than routine stories about people doing what they're supposed to do.
It's also unrealistic to claim that people used to care about each other until social programs killed it. A century ago, young children were working long hours in mines and textile mills for a pittance. A century ago, nonwhite Americans were relegated to the poorest dead-end service jobs, without benefits. And, a century ago, many Americans went without health care (and died), because they were too poor to send for the doctor.
Be that as it may, it's a little inconsistent for you to lament the lack of charity today, when you're trying to argue that receiving unearned money or goods causes people's ambition to dry up. If you truly felt that way, you'd be opposed to ALL charity programs, government, private, community or family.
Honestly, Olivia, I would feel after responding to almost every post I have done by now you would understand my point. I do not care about social programs. I have even said they are needed. My problem is with their execution, not their continuance. In the same response I made to you about infrastructure spending, I even related this.
Spending is done most efficiently and most quickly at the lowest possible levels of government. It is not the Federal Government's job to do anything but provide for the national defense, ensure the continuance of our nation as the superpower it once was, protect interstate commerce and the interpretation of commerce laws. That is it.
Article 10: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Social Safety nets, Health Care, Departments of Education, Departments of Blah, blah, blah... If a state wants it, a state can do it.
The Federal Government has done something amazing, and no one ever caught on. Not only are we subsidizing people's inefficiency and laziness. We began to subsidize entire state's laziness and inefficiency.
I am a proponent of state rights, a constitutional fundamentalist. It is what made us great. Straying from it is what made us terrible.
