“Where are the tax revenues? … We got nothing,” Norah O’Donnell beseeches Jay Carney

CBS White House correspondent Norah O’Donnell showed her true colors Monday. In a post-debt ceiling session she confronted Press Secretary Jay Carney with what cannot be interpreted as an impartial question.

Commentary Magazine has the details:

… CBS’s Norah O’Donnell peppered Carney with terse, accusatory questions about the lack of tax revenue (read: tax increases) in the debt ceiling deal. O’Donnell complained about how many GOP demands were met by the deal, and then said to Carney: “You gave them everything they wanted and we got nothing.”

We? We as in liberal Democrats?

Would someone please tell the pretty, but dimwitted reporter that she’s not supposed to reveal that kind of thing in public?

    I think our problems go way beyond Norah O'Donnell's tenuous grasp on the economic picture.

      He was right with:
      If the US Government was a family, they would be making $58,000 a year, they spend $75,000 a year & are $327,000 in credit card debt.

      But, the spending cuts were off the mark. What was actually done was the family was increasing their spending to $82,500, but decided to cut that back to $81,700.
      They never cut actual spending, they cut the proposed spending increases.

    When philandering Michael Schiavo with two children by his mistress was having his incapacitated wife dehydrated to death over 13 days, where were the feminists? And then he married his longtime mistress 10 months after his wife's death.

    If Obama is re-elected it will be because of identity politics. His record is abysmal. But when you get 95% of the black vote and 67% of the Hispanic vote, you barely have to get 40% of the white vote and you win easily with 53%.

          • I can't say that Schiavo was the reason that Barry got elected. However, us conservatives chose the wrong hill to die on in that case. Or, more precisely, had it chosen *for* us.

            That particular issue was a matter of state law. Congress has no more business debating that than they do to appoint the dogcatcher in Fleabite MS. A violation of state sovereignty is a violation -- regardless of whether it comes from the right or the left -- and inevitably leads to another violation from the other side once they get into office based upon public outrage over the *first* violation. The only losers in this are every single American, every state, and the nation as a whole.

            I know her husband was a creep. So what. There are so many examples of judicial and legal outrage that if Congress violated state sovereignty for every bit of injustice, there would be *no* other government than the federal government.

            This issue was just another "hot button" issue tested by the Republican PR hacks, as opposed to the Democrat PR hacks -- and many people bought it, just like the DOMA, and the war on cancer patients (erm, the war on drugs). You gotta remember, Mitch, I'm an equal opportunity politician hater. I think they're all scum. I'm not alone, if Congress's sub 30% approval rating over the past 8 years is any indicator. The minute we get Democrats to rise up with us, we will get Washington fixed. We can't do it alone.

  • Sure way to solve debt crisis: get rid of social security, social security disability, medicare and medicaid. If Granny can't work, refuses to work or can't get insurance, then have her family take care of her (instead of the nation). If family doesn't want to foot the bill, then family death panel...Granny gets put on ice floe, muzzled with pillow, or faces business end of .45. Obamacare stays as long as children get full coverage till they're eighteen: they had no choice in the hand they were dealt. After 18, its game-on; either save or die. It's just that simple.

          Unspecific bitching doesn't get us anywhere, and I can't say that they pay back nearly what we put in -- but I don't see how, given that conservatives get hung with the title "heartless bastard" for even suggesting that there is a financial problem, that they can be even replaced.

          Me, I have written off any chance of personally getting anything out of them -- but I can't say that the social upheaval from ending these programs will go over well at all.

        I CAN'T handle right wing-nut/tea party hypocrisy. If you're a right-winger/tea party person that wants gov't out of your life, then let's get rid of SS/Medicare.
        The Constitution (Art. I, sec. 8) states Congress provide for "the general welfare and the common defense." I don't see where social security or medicare provides for either: these programs are specific to the elderly and not the "general" welfare or the common defense.

        Old folks don't die of strokes or heart attacks anymore; they live to be 85/95 and die of dementia. I don't want to pay for that. If you can't work or have your own resources to survive you're taking up my space and my money.

        This reminds me so much of Terry Schivo; the right wing nuts called a special weekend session of Congress for the ENTIRE gov't to get involved in one persons life. I exaggerate to expose hypocrisy and inconsistency; it gets a rise.

        • Let's un-troll this.

          Social Security *is* unconstitutional. It is also politically radioactive. A Congress unable to rein their spending in after trillion dollar deficits won't even touch these programs.

          I do think that they need to be placed before the people as a Constitutional Amendment. It's only fair. The amendment would have to deal with the payments in so they can't be used as bonus taxes/congressional slush funds like they are now. They have to deal with corruption in the administration so that they are not political payola for voters. The only way I can see this happening is to collect the funds nationally, and have the states administer them. You can't end these programs -- people have come to depend upon them, and more importantly, they have paid for them. These were never sold to the American people as taxes. However, they've been treated as such.

          Just like the "lock box" is a fiction designed to keep people from marching on DC with torches and pitchforks, the supposed connection between what you pay in and what you get out has misled people into thinking that these are payments and not taxes, and therefore, have a legitimate right to collect on them. Good luck explaining to Joe Sixpack that he paid in for forty years and now he gets nothing, or coming up with the funds to pay for retirees without taking money from eighteen year-olds.

          It is possible to make Social Security work, but you'd have to get the electioneering out of it, and keep the funds out of the wrong pockets. It *could* work just like insurance -- and life insurance works quite well, thank you.

          There is a simple reason why this will never happen, though. In order to put it before the people as a Constitutional Amendment, the politicians would have to admit that it is *not* constitutional. That means that 80+ years worth of elected representatives have violated their oath of office on their first day of work. We need to throw the whole lot into prison for that.

            If you can lift a fork, drive a car, use a key board, your lazy ass can work. If people are on the welfare tit and they keep popping out kids. The check and stamps won’t go up with each future dead beat.

            If you've already paid into the system, OK. But for those who haven't yet (say 16 and under) well, then it's time to finish SS/SS disability, medicare, and medicaid. That will take care of the 50 trillion in unfunded liabilities.
            For those 55 and under, sorry, it's time to raise the age of SS/Medicare to 75 with vouchers and say bye-bye to medicaid.
