  • Funny you should ask. Every once in a while we worry that we may have gone too far, so we actually ran the last line of this story past the wives and the Administrator's 20-year old daughter before we went with it. They all laughed and said, "Go for it." The line, that is, not the internship.

    But we think that if we actually proposed an internship program, the wives would just roll their eyes, shake the heads and ask each other, "How did we end up with these morons?"

• This article's premise is completely flawed, but maybe that's why you aren't a journalist. Columnists for the MD are not paid for their work, therefore no taxpayer money is going to produce a sex column. But if we're on the subject you might want to check out... oh I don't know, every other public university's newspaper website.

  • Sorry TJ on the BJ article. The CSU system in California is funded by tuition and taxpayer dollars. That's what pays for the journalism department and the Mustang Daily printing costs. If there were no Cal Poly, there would be no Mustang Daily. Her status as paid or unpaid is immaterial.

    • Wrong again, the MD sells advertising and maintains itself that way. Thanks for playing. If you don't want to support the MD, then don't go to the places that it sells advertisements to. That's how the free-market works... Thought you conservatives were pros at that.

      • Again, you miss the point. The small amount of money the ads bring in do not pay for the everything that goes into the publishing of MD. I used to be a print publisher, I know the costs.

        • Don't let the facts get in the way of your opinion. The Mustang Daily, in fact, does pay for basically everything. But, I guess that's why you're a blogger.
          Also let me give you a lesson in the free market. You don't agree with what the MD publishes (which it has a right to do). Ads bought by local businesses finance the MD. Local patrons finance those businesses. If you don't want your money printing the MD, then don't go to those businesses. Glad we cleared that up, as this subject has nothing to do with public education.
          Again, thanks for making yourself look silly, not that your readers will notice.

        • Fine, TJ. You know printing, employee, UI, medical, insurance, office, regulatory, legal and accounting costs, plus the these-days heavily discounted local ad rates, better than a 15 year founder of international publishing empire I owned and sold. I give up, You win. I'm done.

        • You "asked." You "asked" the numbnuts at the college newspaper and they said they pay for 95% of their costs. I would laugh if the stupidity wasn't so painful to watch. Did the college newspaper know how much their building cost to build? Did they have any idea what their utility bills amount to? How much their equipment cost and their legal insurance adds to the university's bill? Their labor is free but did they count the publicly-funded scholarships and taxpayer-financed student loans which allow their free labor to matriculate? Get a clue.

        • One last comment, which I brought up earlier and have to repeat to you. You are not counting the cost of the journalism dept and all the other benefits of being part of the school, without which the paper would not exist, and could not exist profitably.

          Regardless, it's content unfit for a school paper.

        • Are you serious? Major newspapers like the New York Times and Boston Globe can't make enough money to support their costs, and you think a college newspaper is self-supporting?

        • No, I just didn't want to put too many numbers in my post and confuse y'all. The MD pays for 95 plus percent of it's costs and that is a fact. The scale of a college newspaper and a national one is far different, it's apples to oranges.
          Where are you getting your facts? Sounds like you're using Stephen Colbert's gut method. I, in fact, went to the source. Thanks for allowing me to clarify.
