FCC commissioner says free internet is a civil right for “every nappy-headed child”

Congratulations to Obama-appointed FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn. Preparing IHateTheMedia.com requires us to read a lot of crap in the course of a day and it takes a lot to surprise us anymore, but she’s done it.

“I can’t think of a more significant overarching civil rights issue than this,” Clyburn said, “that every nappy-headed child have the ability to connect worldwide.”

We’re just not sure which part of this statement surprises us most: the fact that she thinks free internet is a civil right or that she used the phrase “nappy-headed child.”

Oh, Ms. Clyburn, Don Imus on line three.

  • i think the argument against free internet is bogus. radio waves are public/free and for some reason the market has figured out a way to created hundreds of billions from that medium. the internet more easily be made accessible to the public at no fee.

to add, it seems to me that Commisioner Clyburn, is pulling from a life experience to drive home a point about giving access to those (black or otherwise) who don't have the means. this article leaves out the fact that there are 5 FCC commissioners who equally represent america... all of which were appointed by the administration and no more than 3 are allowed to be of the same political party. so when the editor of this site says that "Preparing IHateTheMedia.com requires us to read a lot of crap"... i would say.. preparing IHateTheMedia.com requires reporting nothing but crap.

  • Ugh...

I fear for our country... and our liberties...

Sorry for the language but this b**ch be crazy...

All that she said was out of control. Just because she lacked shoes, doesnt mean that we have to pay for free internet for every human being in this country that can't "afford it" and then pretty much say "nappy headed" just completely makes her absolutely crazy. there are things called public libraries, university libraries (that are many times opened to the public) and very competetive internet cafes if someone wants to be connected regardless of their hair situation.

    Where is the outrage?

  • Ze French, eet eez so seksy zounds, yes? Ze Cromignon Man, honouring heez contribution to culinary arts development....

Ah, czit. When I started with this thought it seemed like it would get funny in less words. I'm up.

    • I heard he wasn't very happy, and thinks she's quite crappy. And too boot, her hair is too nappy.

  • If you want free internet go to the Libary! There are people who will argue that computers and cell phones have destroyed America! Kids are lazy and obese! We were happy growing up and didn't have a pot to piss in! I feel sad for the kids today! They don't know what the word NO means! People want but they never bother to find out who is paying for it! Nothing in life is free!

  • Okay, so if "nappy haired" children are entitled to internet access as a "civil right" what about the civil rights of red neck children, peckerwood kids and white trash tykes?

    • what church and what preacher? I dont understand your comment administrator. she wasn't talking about Christ nor was she talking about religion at all. Your comments seems a non-sequitur.

      • Not what her words were, but how they sounded, how she talked, how she moved. Watching her just "felt" like I was in Rev Wright's church and she was guest preaching.

        • I think here that would have been fair to say is that she reminded you of "preachers" like Al Sharpton or Reverend Wright or any of the many, believe it or not, white and latin stupid and ignorant people who claim to be pastors, but really aren't. Or that she reminded you of a "preacher" that is part of a stupid "church" bldg whose only goal in life is to make money and speak nonsense. They exist, but they are not the majority.

Your words were erroneous or else incomplete. The way you phrased that it is easy to think that you meant to say that all preachers in all churches bare similitude to this ... lady and in all thruthfulness that is not so. There is a marked difference between a a Rev Wright and real preachers, pastors and priests in churches across the country even the world.

I don't know what your particular issues are, or whom have you spoken to or what churches have you been too that make you say such a thing, but in my experience this lady doesn't remind me of any preacher, pastor or priest that I have seek counseling of or heard a sermon from.

          • Well fair enough, however I will say then that I certainly cannot share that feeling. I wouldn't know about your history to figure it out either. I don't know where you have been and who have you been talking to. All that I can conclude that you may have been at the wrong places and/or spoken to the wrong people. Which happens.

As I watch and hear her she bares no similitude to any preacher, pastor or priest I have encountered in my personal life BUT I can concede that she MAY bare some similitude to the likes of an Al Sharpton or any other similar black, white, hispanic and asian "preacher" out there that hustles for money. If you had said that I would have agreed.

These preachers are disgusting and so is this lady. I can say with all certainty, that all real and working christians will say the same thing and the idiots that go to their churches are just that idiots and again although perhaps said in a more amiable way I am sure that other real working christians will say the same too. They are in no way representative of me nor of the churches I have been associated with in my life, nor with the overall Faith to begin with, so that is why I reacted to your post in that way.

All in all there are evil infiltrators in all aspects of life even religion subject that Glenn Beck speaks of constantly.

    • Well, why not? Blacks have been blurring the lines between separation of Church and state for decades. Let a white candidate speak about ANYTHING in a church, though, and out march the usual suspects: ACLU, PAW, Barry Lynn, Southern Poverty Law Center, NAACP, Rep. Alan Grayson (remember the "Taliban Dan Webster' ad?)

      • "Blacks have been blurring the lines between separation of Church and state for decades"

Really? How? and who are these Blacks, because I am sure you are not speaking about me. And do you know what separation of Church and State actually is? By your comment I seriously doubt that you know what it actually is.

Considering that what she had to say had nothing to do with any type of church environment I would lke to know what is the genesis of this unusual comments.

        • Ms. Queen, the Admin's post hit a real sore spot with me... and, my apologies for not being clearer about my opinion by stating, "predominantly Black churches."

I am well aware of the REAL definition of separation of church and state involving NO sect of any faith (much less Christianity) being THE official government-sanctioned religious institution (such as was The Church of England).

          • Ruben,

I understand where you are coming from and I will agree, however I have said in the past that words have power and that is important especially when we are dealing with "minorities" to measure ourselves. Conservatives have to be better than liberals we just have to, it may seem unfair but it is what it is. Mainly because we are held at a higher standard. I am not saying that if you encounter an idiot you don't call him or her an idiot. I think you'll get what I mean.

Do you think it is easy to be a Christian (real) young politically independent conservative hispanic (accented) black legal immigrant female in this country and in this climate? No... it is not easy. I get hit from pretty much every side. I am sure I am not the only one or else variations of people who share the conservative banner and if I were a weaker person on my conservative convictions, but stand true to my other ones and being a minority, your post can cut and we can loose people that would be a great addition to our conservative ranks. That is all that I am saying, we are not alone in this and if we want more conservatives of all colors, creeds, faiths, and from other nationalities (who are here legally of course) to add to our desire to have a better country all that I am saying is that we have to improve our use of the language to describe what we want to describe.

It will be very easy for me to state that Whites have been doing this or doing that... but I don't because I have a brain and I use it and I know the truth.

Separation of Church and State as defined by Jefferson and in no way written in any law or constitutional paperwork is that the state or State is not to impose a religion one over another. It was important to protect individuals and religious organizations from the state or State. It wasn't meant to be considered that religion or faith was a danger to the state or State. In fact the reverse is true, that the state or State posed a threat to the free and real exercise of religion (of any kind). Once the state or State co-opts a religion (it doesn't matter which one) we get problems... example Iran, modern-day Turkey, Nigeria, I can go on... Even if we go wayyy back to ancient Israel, in all reality Israel was not meant to be a human led theocracy. Even though there were good kings that G-d liked, if I am not wrong, most kings sucked or were just simply evil. A human-led one or multi deity theocracy (state or State co-opting a religion) spells disaster and that is what Jefferson was getting at.

In the Constitution it says that Congress will not choose a religion over another to institute over the entire country. Period and done. If it does then we have a single or multiy deity theocracy which is a big no-no. In addition that all citizens have the right to exercise their religion to their hearts desire (with the understanding that there is no intervention of any kind upon that exercise by the government at any point in time). It is simple. Religious protection from the government not protection of the government from religion.

  • I agree with you, tootie. The internet is the only place where all classes of people can access, research and find facts, information and the 'truth'--not to mention a bunch of garbage as well. It is without a doubt, an absolute right for everyone to have access to unbiased, unregulated, unadulterated information ++PLUS, the freedom of speech. I love that she said, "nappy" headed children... I am going to use nappy-headed all the time now.

    • Thank you for your comment Shirley.. you said it much more eloquently than I could have! AND as a kid, we were always told to go comb our mop and when we had bed head it was called nappy; I never associated it with anything other than that... I don't get it!

      • Tootie and Shirley, I am......it is already your right to PURCHASE any service you would like to purchase, including internet, from your local ISP-and given the fact that I see the cable company trucks at the projects by my house every day, most folks are buying cable-now they just need to purchase the other services offered too-and they will have it.
Just don't look for us to pay for it. It is not a civil right, and it is not our job to buy everything for everyone.
We already pay for their food, cars, cell phones, educations, homes, and their sweet 22 inch spinners. They will have to cut back on some of the luxuries if they want a computer and the web too!
That may not sound gentile, but it is not meant to sound that way. When a moron politician rides the wave of reparations, and demands the tax payers pay for another luxury for the non-working class, it pisses those of us who work 20 hour days off in a big way!
Want the web-get a motherf&%king job and pay for it yourselves I say!
