So this is how James Clyburn would have our democracy end. Not with a bang. Not even with a whimper. But with Obama assuming the unilateral power to further sell off our children’s futures to China in his never ending crusade to buy votes and pay back his political cronies.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC): “I’ve said time and time again, if the President gets up to August 2nd, without a piece of legislation, he should not allow this country to go into default. He should sign an Executive Order invoking the 14th Amendment and send that to all the governmental agencies for us to continue to pay our bills. He could do that with a stroke of a pen.
“We’ve seen many big things done in history that way. I’ve joked with my staff the other day, ‘tell me what was the bill number of the Emancipation Proclamation.’ It was an Executive Order.
Perhaps someone should let the honorable Representative James Clyburn know. Through the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln sought to free some of the slaves, not create new ones.

Obama & Clyburn claim to be African-Americans, but don't seem to understand the history of the African part. How many nations in Africa have or have had problems with dictators, military strongmen, tribal leaders, & in a few cases, royalty? Currently or in the recent past(post colonial)? Almost all of them, & Clyburn would have no problem going in this direction? What an ass, he is a moron who should be nowhere near the levers of power. What a disgrace he is to our once great republic.
But the trick is, he only wants the White House to turn into a Palace while there's a communist living in it. If Bush had tried any of this nonsense Obama has done, he'd be screaming "This isn't a monarchy! It's a democracy!" Which of course, it isn't.
As usual a liberal wants others to obey their laws but not themselves. This idiot doesn't even know that Lincoln wanted to free only the slaves in the south; NOT the slaves in the north. You are correct Elrond. I can't count the number of times, in the last few weeks, that I have heard this same statement from politicians, media and even so called conservatives who think that he either should or could do this.
The really amazing thing is that even if the asshats in D.C. don't raise the debt limit, the country will not default. The interest on the Federally issued bonds WILL be paid. That comes to around $22 billion/ month and the monthly revenue for the Federal Gov. is around $200 billion. What MAY happen is that a few million bureaucrats might have to go without a paycheck for an indefinite amount of time and that is what is SOOOO depressing about the whole situation.
Now, what the Prez might do is to unnecessarily stop payments on Social Security, Medicare, Veterans benefits and Welfare. Then he could use his bully pulpit to tell the parasites(I DO NOT include veterans in this description) that it is the Tea Party, the Conservatives and the G.O.P. that are causing all of this misery. He would then have bought himself another term. This is exactly what I predict is going to happen.
AC, I disagree with your assessment that "He would then have bought himself another term." I think what would happen if he did that, is he would actually endorse the beginning of his own impeachment proceedings. But, then again, I've always been a little more optimistic than you.
@hisham, You may be correct, my predictions have not often been accurate. I said in 2007 that there would be NO WAY IN HELL that the American people would elect a Marxist to the Presidency. I once had faith in the American people's intelligence, but even though there is a fair number of real Americans left, I have "lost my religion" when it comes to believing that the majority have enough sense to know what is good and what is evil. Too many generations have been trained that government is their salvation. The more time that passes without radical reversal of that attitude, the greater the percentage of the population is comfortable with slavery.
I didn't worry in '07 either. I had no doubt that the people of this country would refuse to elect a Muslim. I must concede to being wrong on that one.
Please forgive my language for a moment. I am getting so goddamned tired of people invoking the 14th Amendment. It does not say what they think it does! And even if it did mean what they're implying, do they really want to set the precedent in which the POTUS can go around Congress on anything?
Granted I do not know Constitutional law, but from my reading of it, it just says that we have to pay our bills, not that congress gets a blank check to continue running up the debt however it sees fit.

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.
The first sentence says it all. The debt must be legally incurred. Like it or not going a penny over the ceiling would not be legal so an executive order to do so would unconstitutional. I think I have that right.
