Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC): “I’ve said time and time again, if the President gets up to August 2nd, without a piece of legislation, he should not allow this country to go into default. He should sign an Executive Order invoking the 14th Amendment and send that to all the governmental agencies for us to continue to pay our bills. He could do that with a stroke of a pen.

“We’ve seen many big things done in history that way. I’ve joked with my staff the other day, ‘tell me what was the bill number of the Emancipation Proclamation.’ It was an Executive Order.

Perhaps someone should let the honorable Representative James Clyburn know. Through the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln sought to free some of the slaves, not create new ones.

For some unknown reason, James Clyburn, the top ranking black Democrat in the House, seems to be taking the fall for the party’s failure in the midterm elections. How else can you explain his “promotion” from the number two position to the number three position?

Politico.com has the demotion details:

House Democrats have reached a deal to keep both Reps. Steny Hoyer and James Clyburn in the leadership, with Hoyer (D-Md.) serving as minority whip and Clyburn (D-S.C) taking a new, as-yet-still-undefined number three position.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.) who is seeking the minority leader’s job in the next Congress, reached an agreement with Clyburn on late Friday night, and Democratic leaders quickly announced the deal.

Clyburn’s title and responsibilities were not specified in the announcement from Pelosi’s office, and Democratic leadership aides scrambled to explain the deal to reporters.

No shit they announced it quickly. They had to do it while Clyburn was still basking in the warm glow of the party’s press release and before he figured out that he’d been screwed.

“When,” Crowley asked, “does the statute of limitations run out on blaming the Bush administration and when is it on you all as the governing — really in the House and the Senate and the White House. When does the economy your baby, so to speak?”

There had to have ben a brief moment when Clyburn did a little internal double take and thought to himself, “What? What? WTF? They’re not supposed to ask Democrats tough questions like that on CNN.”
