Good news for Mary Jo Kopechne’s family. She would be happy to die a horrible death, gasping for air as her lungs filled with the cold, murky waters off Chappaquiddick Island.
HAD SHE ONLY KNOWN THAT THE DRUNKEN DOLT WHO DROVE HER OFF THAT BRIDGE WOULD DO SO MUCH TO ADVANCE THE CAUSE OF LIBERALISM.
Seriously. That’s what ex-lawyer, blogger and writer Melissa Lafsky says in the Huffington Post:
We don’t know how much Kennedy was affected by her death, or what she’d have thought about arguably being a catalyst for the most successful Senate career in history. What we don’t know, as always, could fill a Metrodome.
Still, ignorance doesn’t preclude a right to wonder. So it doesn’t automatically make someone (aka, me) a Limbaugh-loving, aerial-wolf-hunting NRA troll for asking what Mary Jo Kopechne would have had to say about Ted’s death, and what she’d have thought of the life and career that are being (rightfully) heralded.
Who knows — maybe she’d feel it was worth it.
Yeah, maybe. But as the old saying goes, Kopechne was unavailable for comment.

How can her death possibly be seen as the catalyst for Kennedy's politcal career? Do New Englanders regularly site vehicular manslaughter and negligent homicide (or outright murder) as prerequisites for holding public office?
Lafsky's right about one thing, what she doesn't know could fill the metrodome, and then some--for starters, the murder of Kopechne was not a catalyst that launched Kennedy's senate career, it was the bomb that destroyed any hope he might have had for the presidency. So, in retrospect, we might thank Mary Jo for her role in preventing The First One 40 years ago.
