President Obama gave a speech last week in which he quoted the Declaration of Independence. Sort of. He made a small, but telling edit.
The Founding Fathers’ version: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…”
President Obama’s version: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…”
Hmmmm. Strange edit for a self-professed Christian, would you not agree?

Well, not to defend him in any way, but I doubt he even knows enough of the Constitution to quote any part of it. I believe one of his speechwriters put that line in the teleprompter for him!

If you are godless and proud of it why are you using the name of a Deity (quite in vain really) in your post? I don't get it. No my dear Japan is NOT a godless society. They are actually EXTREMELY religious. Christians are a minority (of course) however there are those who worship their ancestors, worship the emperor, or worship dozens of gods in different religions. Please pick up a book and get an education.
With that said Japan is not necessarily doing that great economically regardless of their technological advancements.

Pull your head out of your ass and think for a change. Obama left 'by their Creator' out for a reason. Every single word in every presidential speech is worked over by him and his speechwriters. Every single word they say and don't say has meaning. If precise wording was not a priority, why does he endure public ridicule for carrying his teleprompter everywhere he goes? It'd be a hell of a lot easier to just wing it. If it is a case of running out of time and having to trim what he quoted, why that particular phrase of all phrases? He's not running low on time to speak -- he loves being out there and running his yap -- like the old woman says in Shrek, "getting him to talk isn't hard -- it's getting him to shut up that's the problem".
The only reasonable conclusion is that he'd like to get away from reminding people that we get our rights from anything and anybody other than the State, reversing 200-odd years of US government. It's got nothing to do with G-d, and everything to do with imposing socialism on the nation, one step at a time. If you were not such a blind sheep, you'd have a problem with an overreaching government hell-bent upon taking your rights away. Oh, I'm sure you'll fecklessly protest overreaching government when it's Republican, but NEVER when the ass-hat in chief is a member of your own political party.

Sorry Slick, but "paraphrasing" one of the seminal documents of human history, let alone American history, is not an acceptable use of the message it contains. A quote is a quote. And while I'm no wild-eyed conspiracy theorist, I don't think you have to look took hard at the video to see the wheels turning inside his head during the 4-second pause he takes at the critical moment. Seeing the words "by their Creator" come up on the Teleprompter, it looks like he just bit an apple and found half a worm.
Also, since you brought it up, the separation of church and state in Japan is mandated in their Constitution. Just as it is in ours. This is not about religion, this is about where human rights come from. Not from any person or government, but from whatever force brought us into being. When Obama makes statements like this -- or, in this case, omits statements -- he is making a conscious choice of words. And I, for one, believe that how our President feels about the foundation our country was built upon is important.
Uh, perhaps you better do a little reading about Japan. Their stock market is off roughly 75% from it's high, and the country has had severe economic problems for the last two decades. China and South Korea are kicking their ass.

Wow that is a lot of strawman. Let me clear it up. The issue isn't that Obama isn't religious or isn't religious enough. The man who wrote The Declaration of Independence (notwithstanding the parts he lifted from John Locke) was in all likelihood a deist and could hardly be described as a believer. But Jefferson did believe that our rights are granted by a higher power at birth. He also knew that these rights could not be taken away no matter how much a government might work to subvert them. Obama's removal of the language strips the document of the keystone element. The declaration that our rights belong to each and everyone of us individually and they may not be disestablished by men. Without recognition of that fact we invite fascism. Collective privilege as opposed to rights and a new Declaration of Dependence where the will of the individual is subverted in the name of the community which is in reality the desires of those managing the collective.

Historical revisionism is intellectually dishonest at best and an exercise in futility while the ORIGINAL source documents are still in existance.
Obama made up for his "Creator" oversight by walking to church Sunday with the wife and kids (and a retinue of photographers). I suspect both occurances were planned. Obama is likely an agnostic who doesn't believe in a Creator or Jesus or Allah (or the Declaration of Independence for that matter); if there's a divinity he does believe in, it's himself.
If he is an agnostic he would believe that there is a possibility for a Creator he is just unsure. He respects that other believes in it and wouldn't necessary skirt the idea of mentioning the possibility. There could be just do not have all the evidence to satisfy his mind. Or else there could be a Creator but there could be no G-d coming to Earth as man (Jesus), etc. I think that is valid. People should question the existence of G-d if they are willing to be open to the idea that at some point there could be sufficient information or evidence of His existence that could satisfy their minds. If he (Obama) doesn't believe in a Creator nor All Knowing and All Encompassing Deity then he is an atheist. Then his entire worldview is about what he can see and what he knows so yes it is possible to belief that his deity could be himself.

Actually, the original document was written in such a way that God, or Jesus, or whatever creator a person might believe in, was covered. So he could be thinking Allah, and still should have been able to say the word Creator. He just can't bring himself to say the words in the original document, because he abhors what our foundering fathers stood for.
Exactly. That is what I don't get. Whenever I hear people that don't want to use the word G-d at the Pledge I tell them imagine that you are talking to YOUR god. What is the problem? The Pledge and the Constitution and a lot of founding documents do not emphasize the Deity as the Christian G-d (Christ, G-d Father, Holy Spirit, Trinity, etc) nor even the Jewish G-d YWH. What happens here is exactly what Beck said, by allowing that a Creator (any Creator as per the predilections of the individual) has provided the individual with rights that cannot be taken away, then the government cannot take that position of all knowing and all powerful deity in the life of the individual. Hence it has no real power other than the power the individual gives to it and can take away because govt is under the individual (and the citizenry) not the other way around.
The sour expression on Obama's face as he gets to the part where he should say "by their Creator" is priceless and very telling. I think the teleprompter probably did have the line in, and Obama was thinking about how to edit it out without making gibberish of what he was saying.
Christ, he paraphrased. Those weren't the only words he omitted. You act like he quoted it directly verbatim sans the two words 'their creator.' It was an abridged paraphrase. People do it all the time in speech. Lighten up, folks.

Since the rest to the phrase quote IS verbatim directly from the Declaration of Independence, it is definitely not a paraphrase or a Readers Digest condensation. This omission was done intentionally and with malice of forethought. See Kip Hookers comment above for the reason behind it.

The notion that rights are granted by a creator and are unalienable are of paramount importance to the document. If removed the entire document becomes worthless. Without this philosophy the founders had no right rebelling against England. Without them we have no right refusing any demand our government makes of us.
If we assume that rights are imparted by will of the state, then we’ve permitted that state authority to ablate them. And in doing so have guaranteed their extinction.

What kind of a f--kwit wouldn't understand that people are watching his every move, and would notice that particular omission? I take it as a deliberate attempt at provocation. Any world leader making speeches knows that every word out of their pie hole gets analyzed for all possible implications. However, this particular leader in his "brilliance" doesn't feel that applies to him except, of course, when he wants it to.
I also noticed that he didn't quote the entire Declaration -- I am aware that the quote was abridged. However, *how* things get twisted out of proportion by deleting certain phrases is neither harmless nor insignificant.
