Saluting Bono, our rock ‘n roll eco-wacko hypocrite of the day

At this point, it’s pretty well established that environmentalism is one part philosophy, one part hypocrisy. Take Bono, U2’s resident empty suit, for example.

Bono and Al Gore argue about which of them is the bigger environmental hypocrite

Here’s Bono expressing his philosohy in Tokyo back in 2008:

“My prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet.”

The environmental group Keen for Green responded with high praise:

If your (sic) looking for an environmental role model, Irish rockstar, Bono (born Paul David Hewson, May 10, 1960), of the band U2 is a good place to start. Bono … participated in a tree planting ceremony in Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2008, where efforts are being taken to turn a landfill into an 88 hectare forest. Bono has also been active in the Greenpeace community since 1993 when his entire band participated in a protest against a nuclear power plant, Sellafield, in England. And of course, Bono is self-reported avid recycler and drives a car which runs on ethanol instead of gasoline.

Now here’s Bono expressing his hypocrisy in Melbourne in 2010:

U2’S 360 Degrees tour, the most expensive rock spectacle ever, is here. The tour, with a daily running cost of $850,000, arrived on six 747 jets…

“You compare a tour by the number of trucks they use,” production manager Jake Berry said. “The Rolling Stones ran 46 trucks. We are running 55. This is the biggest.”

And here’s how the environmentalist groups responded:

(Sound of crickets)

And now, ladies and gentlemen, here’s U2 performing their international megahit, “We Are Big, Bloody Environmental Hypocrites (or Something Like That).”

Hypocritical Bono named America’s worst investor

Bono, lead singer of Irish rock band U2, who travels the world preaching that everyone should pay higher taxes but then moved the band’s corporate headquarters to the Netherlands in an effort to avoid paying higher taxes, won’t have to worry about that issue this year. Because he lost his Irish ass in the stock market in 2009.

Financial woes have Irish rocker Bono singing the blues

Bono, lead singer of Irish rock band U2, who travels the world preaching that everyone should pay higher taxes but then moved the band’s corporate headquarters to the Netherlands in an effort to avoid paying higher taxes, won’t have to worry about that issue this year. Because he lost his Irish ass in the stock market in 2009.

The San Francisco Business Journal tells how Bono hit some sour financial notes:

U2 singer Bono’s investments into Elevation Partners, which has offices in New York and Menlo Park, have helped make him the “worst investor investor in America,” according to the online publication 24/7 Wall Street.

With large investments in Palm, Forbes, and Move.com — “an unprecedented string of disastrous investments which even bad luck could not explain” — Elevation Partners has earned the distinction of being “arguably the worst run institutional fund of any size in the United States,” 24/7 Wall Street asserts.

…Elevation bought 25 percent of Palm in 2007, and the company’s stock has since tanked – down to $3.65 from $18 last September…

Elevation Partners put $300 million into Forbes’ online operations in 2006, and the company’s total value has dropped from $750 million to “perhaps $100 million.”

Elevation put $100 million into Move.com, which owns home and real estate websites, and company shares subsequently lost 50 percent of their value, 24/7 noted.

There’s more, but our uncharacteristic schadenfreude seems to be getting the better of us. Suffice it to say, if Bono had been around in 1845 he probably would have invested in potatoes.

Bono performs his tribute to Elvis Presley exclusively for IHateTheMedia.com

Bono, the tax-evading frontman for Irish rockers U2, unveiled an odd ode to Elvis Presley on Great Britain’s Radio 4 this morning. It’s a 14-minute long…uh…poem.

If anything, it proves that U2’s music must be even better than anyone ever realized, because it had to compensate for Bono’s absurd lyrics.

The poem is titled American David. It’s a melange of odd, seemingly insulting rhymes loosely set to a music track. It also contains numerous words and phrases that many will consider offensive, such as “white nigger” and “spastic” and “shit.”

The Times UK describes it like this:

One rhyming triplet played on the singer’s long weight battle: “Elvis the bumper stickers/ Elvis the white knickers/ Elvis the white nigger ate at Burger King and just kept getting bigger.”

Another took aim at his iconic dance move: “Elvis the ecstatic/ Elvis the plastic/ Elvis the elastic with a spastic dance that could explain the energy of America.”

But other lines told of the U2 singer’s admiration, as he called the late pin-up “pharoah-like”, a “genius” and a “psalmist”.

Pardon us if we seem presumptuous, but we’d like to contribute our own lyrics:

He died on the toilet/ Covered with his own sweat/ Don’t be upset but don’t forget, closet thing America ever had to a king

Hey, it might not be great, but it’s no worse than that crap Bono’s wrote.

When do the royalties start rolling in?
