How many Congressmen does it take to screw up a lightbulb?

Q: How many congresspersons does it take to change a light bulb?
A: As many as crony capitalist CFL bulb manufacturers can to afford to buy off!

According to Jeff Jacoby, the incandescent ban, passed in the Democrat-controlled Congress in 2007 but not vetoed by President Bush, has less to do with saving the planet or keeping Al Gore’s mansion from floating away and more to do with bulb-makers’ profits:

good-idea-lightbulb
"Hey, here's an idea. Let's rip off the American people."

On paper, [the law’s] purpose is to increase energy efficiency by requiring that bulbs produce more light per watt. But by setting the new standards higher than the common incandescent can reach, the law’s real-world effect is to deprive most Americans of the freedom to buy the light bulbs they prefer. Instead, they will be forced to spend more money for fragile halogen bulbs or for the swirled compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) that have been around for decades but that most consumers have never wanted to buy.

The use of efficiency mandates to snuff out the standard light bulb was an exercise of unadulterated crony capitalism. It came about after big bulb manufacturers, frustrated by their customers’ refusal to switch from cheap throwaway incandescents to the far more profitable compact fluorescents touted by greens, decided to play hardball.

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door, especially if you contribute generously to enough greedy scumbag politicians who’ll mandate it.

By the way, the Germans circumvented their weasel-fuhrers’ ban on incandescents by selling them as “heat bulbs.” Don’t know about you, but we’re starting to feel a bit chilly ourselves.

Rand in command: Senator Paul reams an official from the Energy Department

Rand Paul tells an official from the energy department to stay out of his bathroom, out of his bedroom, out of his kitchen, out of his whole friggin’ life.

We’re really starting to like this Rand Paul guy. In this clip he tells an official from the energy department to stay out of his bathroom, out of his bedroom, out of his kitchen, out of his whole friggin’ life.

It was all prompted by the department’s idiotic light bulb energy efficiency regulations.

If Paul is willing to do this after just two months on the job, think how much fun he’s going to have in the next six years.

Go, Rand, go.

It’s corkscrewed and we’re screwed: Trash collectors won’t pick up new energy-saving bulbs

Think of it as central planning at its finest: Enviromental wackos hate current technology. Government changes regulations to please wackos. Law of unintended consequences bites us all in the ass.

The way we understand the theory, this light bulb will save the environment by spewing poisonous mercury into the atmosphere. Maybe we're missing a few details.

The Daily Mail UK has the details:

Councils across the UK are refusing to pick up low-energy lightbulbs from homes as they contain toxic mercury, which gives off poisonous vapours.

But confused consumers are putting the new bulbs — classed as hazardous waste — in their dustbins when they burn out, potentially putting the safety of thousands of binmen at risk.

… A study by Germany’s Federal Environment Agency found that when [a compact fluorescent bulb] breaks, it emits levels of toxic vapour up to 20 times higher than the safe guideline limit for an indoor area.

The Republicans are making some muted noises about repealing the law behind this idiotic lightbulb, but we don’t expect them to see the light until it’s too late.

All’s well that Orwells: USA Today says that banning incandescent light bulbs is freedom

George Orwell has come back from the dead to write editorials down at USA Today, where truth is fiction, black is white, and green is definitely red.

George Orwell has come back from the dead to write editorials down at USA Today, where truth is fiction, black is white, and green is definitely red.

nation-of-cowsThe Detroit News explains:

In a leap of Orwellian logic, USA Today — America’s second-largest newspaper — argues in its lead editorial Tuesday that banning the incandescent light bulb is a victory for free markets.

“The best way for government to boost energy efficiency isn’t to micromanage by picking winners and losers, a job better suited to free-market innovation. It is to set a reasonable standard — miles per gallon or light per watt, for example — and let the market sort it out,” spins the editorial in support of picking winners and losers. “That’s what Congress did in 2007” in banning the bulb.

War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. Banning is choice. Regulation is freedom.

One wonders if USA Today’s editors would tolerate this doublethink if applied to their own industry. Were Congress to ban newspapers in order to force them onto the more “planet-friendly” Internet, would USA Today swallow this as free market economics?

Doublethink. Doublespeak. Doubledandy.

Ingenious German entrepreneurs figure out a way around the incandescent light bulb ban

Two German entrepreneurs have figured a way to turn liberal stupidity on itself and get around the light bulb ban at the same time.

The eco-wackos have succeeded in banning the standard incandescent light bulb, leaving us with those ugly, mercury-filled, twisty bulbs. But two German entrepreneurs have figured a way to turn liberal stupidity on itself and get around the ban at the same time.

light bulb heat ball
Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a light bulb

Just as acts of terrorism have been renamed “made-made disasters” by the Obama administration, these guys had one of those Eureka! moments when they realized they could get around the light bulb ban simply by renaming them “Heat Balls.”

Ahhh, the genius of German design:

A German entrepreneur is bypassing a European Union ban on light bulbs of more than 60 watts by marketing his own brand as mini heaters.

Siegfried Rotthaeuser and his brother-in-law have come up with a legal way of importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs – by producing them in China, importing them as “small heating devices” and selling them as “heatballs” …

On their website, the two engineers describe the heatballs as “action art” and as “resistance against legislation which is implemented without recourse to democratic and parliamentary processes.”

The company’s sold out its first 4,000 Heat Balls in just 72 hours.

It looks like heatballs are a hot commodity.

Europe’s Light Bulb Gestapo wants you to rat out your neighbors

The global warming fanatics have won another round in the European Union. From September 1, it will be illegal to import conventional pearl or frosted bulbs of any shape or wattage into the U.K. and will send out “trading standard officers” to check.

When light bulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have light bulbs.
When light bulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have light bulbs.

The global warming fanatics have won another round in the European Union. Consider this frightening story from the Telegraph UK:

From September 1, it will be illegal to import conventional pearl or frosted bulbs of any shape or wattage. Traditional incandescent bulbs of 100 watts will also be banned under European law aimed at reducing energy bills and carbon dioxide emissions.

They will be replaced by energy saving lights, which usually use flourescent tubes, but it is thought some consumers will still prefer their ‘traditional’ bulbs, particularly for reading lamps.

There is evidence of people hoarding the old fashioned bulbs around Europe and enforcement agencies are ready to crack down on unscrupulous businessmen who continue to import the “illegal bulbs” from factories in China.

The story gets worse. Much worse. Great Britain will actually send out “trading standard officers” to make sure businesses aren’t selling any of the old-fashioned light bulbs people actually want. The public will also be encouraged to report anyone who has the temerity to sell illegal bulbs. Individuals who import the bulbs are subject to a £5,000 fine. And big companies can get nailed for even more.

This scares the hell out of Nigel Farrage, the leader of UKIP.

“Under this Government we begin to resemble East Germany in the 1980s where we snoop and report on local businesses,” he said. “No doubt the next move will be to snoop on your parents if they continue to use old fashioned light bulbs.”

We can foresee a future where small groups of people gather in dark living rooms around Great Britain and someone will say, “Let’s light one up.” But they’ll just be talking about illegal incandescent bulbs.
