British guests embarrass Chris Matthews, correct his claim that Tony Blair was closer to Clinton than Bush

Chris hosted four British journalists this weekend and in an effort to demean George W. Bush, ended up being corrected by some Brits.

Is there anything better than seeing Chris Matthews embarrassed on national television? OK, sure, seeing Keith Olbermann pantsed by midgets might be funnier, but seeing Chris Matthews embarrassed runs a close second.

Chris hosted four British journalists this weekend and in an effort to demean George W. Bush, made the ludicrous claim that former Prime Minister Tony Blair “was much closer emotionally and politically to Bill Clinton.”

Surely, Matthews never expected them to unanimously disagree. Liberal blogger Andrew Sullivan shook his head no. Gillian Tett of the Financial Times did the same. Katty Kay of the BBC said, “No.” Matt Frei said, “Wrong.”

Kay and Frei didn’t stop there.

Tony Blair tells one story in his new autobiography:

In his new book, A Journey, Mr Blair writes that the former US president was confused by the presence of Guy Verhofstadt at the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa.

“He didn’t know or recognise Guy, whose advice he listened to with considerable astonishment,” Mr Blair writes. “He then turned to me and whispered, ‘Who is this guy?’ ‘He is the prime minister of Belgium,’ I said.

“Belgium? George said, clearly aghast at the possible full extent of his stupidity. ‘Belgium is not part of the G8’.”

Mr Blair explained to Mr Bush that Mr Verhofstadt was there as “president of Europe”. Belgium held the presidency of the EU council at the time.

Mr Bush responded: “You got the Belgians running Europe?” before shaking his head, “now aghast at our stupidity”, Mr Blair writes.

What’s the only thing worse than having Belgians running Europe? Having a community organizer running the United States.

National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair held a news conference last week and demonstrated the oxymoronic nature of his title.

Blair admitted the President is considering releasing some of the remaining 240 Gitmo detainees in the United States. Of course, he reassured us this would only happen if they can’t be returned to their home countries, because their governments don’t want them back or because the administration thinks they might be abused or tortured by their governments.

Then Blair dropped the real bombshell. He said the former prisoners would have to be given some sort of assistance to start their brand spankin’ new lives in the US of A. “We can’t put them out on the street,” he said.

Are we the only ones who think this is un-freakin-believable? A couple years ago these guys were living in caves in Afghanistan. They had a long term Caribbean vacation. Now we’re going to bring them to the United States and pay them to live here.

Fine. Bring ‘em over.

But not unless each Democrat who spoke in their defense is willing sponsor one of these maniacs, take him into his home, and help him get started in his new life.

Kind of like Madonna with the Malawi kids.
