The good people of Arizona seem to understand a simple truth: If the federal government won’t do its job, the state will have to do it for them. In this case, the job in question is that of protecting the border against an invasion.

CBS News has wall-to-wall coverage of the new wall:
A bill signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer authorizes erection of a security fence along Arizona’s portion of the U.S.-Mexico border, either in a compact with other states or by itself.
Spokesman Matt Benson declined immediate comment Friday on why Brewer signed the bill Thursday and on whether she plans to invoke the authority.
The bill does not specify a cost or make an appropriation but says the state would use donations, inmate labor and private contractors.Brewer recently asked President Barack Obama to extend the deployment of National Guard troops along the border and for more substantial border fences to block smugglers.
Our advice? Make it a do-it-yourself project, Jan. Send out a call for volunteers with hammers and nails and you’ll probably have about a million volunteers to help build that fence in no time at all.

If you'd like to stick you finger in Eric 'I hate Whitey' Holder's eye, and support our law enforcement in Arizona:

Gov. Brewer and Sheriff Joe are awesome!
The real question is, will we be able to see it from space?
Place a $100 bounty on each illegal alien worker and $100 on each family member. A person can earn hundreds of dollars turning in the names and addresses of just a few illegal families. Deport whole families not just the parent.
Put employers and landlords in Jail for 30 days when they are found guilty of employing or renting to Illegal Aliens. Pay a $100 per person bounty to the people who turn in the landlords or employers.
If that were the law I could make about $10K by tomorrow morning.
That's good, but you are not taking into account the HUGE trafficking of stolen identities being used to get jobs, housing and the like...these people often come back clean on an ID check because it is someone else's ID. Would you imprison all who were duped into renting/hiring these con artists?
"Truly punish with fees and if needed imprisonment employers who routinely hire illegals."
Once this is done, none of the rest need be bothered with.
That's a baby carrot compared to the welfare, Section 8, food stamps, WIC, and other government programs. We need to stop payments from the feds that equate to better than $25/hr if you worked.
It's funny, when I lived in Yuma and was trying to attend college, they counted my school money against me so I got very little help in the form of Welfare/Food stamps. All the while you could stand at the post office on check day (Before EBT made its appearance) and see the Sonora plates pull up and carloads get out, go to the SAME PO BOX, remove their bundles of checks and drive straight back to their homes in Mexico. I am sure it's a bit harder now but i am also sure it still happens. We need to ensure no help is given to folks who are illegally here. Sounds harsh...and it is. On the other hand, there should also be an easier way to become a citizen, that route is filled wth dead ends and snafu's all by itself and most who want to come here cannot understand what it takes to do it legally. You really just have to have a marketable skill...get you Visa, get that skill and then apply to extend and stay! If you want to be here its hard work but it does happen, but I would like to see a bit more ease of use in the whole process.
If it's not a really good fence, it probably won't help much, if at all. Fences are good in theory, but most are easily circumvented when given enough time and no one is around to patrol them. What is really needed are fewer reasons for illegals to want to sneak in in the first place.
Good fences, in this case, draw blood. They wouldn't be crawling over them if they had razor blades and broken glass all over them. Of course, anything that breeds like a rabbit can probably dig under the sharpest fence. I know, that was mean. I didn't type 'shoot 'em'. We just need a good deterent. Laws don't seem to work. But, there is progress in AZ.
1 mile of razor wire, that'll do it!
Need more then a mile. The border is pretty long.
Sorry, i ment a mile wide....not long.
Yes! Nobody ever seems to want to address all the perks and incentives that they are coming over here for in the first place. It's not just jobs.
We can start by getting rid of the anchor baby business. We can continue by outlawing outright with prison and fees (and forcibly enforce it) marriages and engagements between illegal and legal citizens/residents. I know it is against the law to marry someone in order for them to get a green card, but the punishments are either not strict enough or not enforced. Forcibly get rid of illegals found working for people and their children even if born in the US start with those that have no intention of going through the process and those that committed a second crime (other than illegally entering the country). Truly punish with fees and if needed imprisonment employers who routinely hire illegals. I will say land mines sounds good too.
Slow down a minute KQ, land mines are an indiscriminate killer, if you forget where you've put them they will reintroduce themselves to you when you step on them. How about a twenty-foot wide run filled with spiders and snakes and alligators and stuff like that. Wouldn't have to feed them, they'd eat anyone stupid enough to try to cross the distance from one fence to the other. Just make sure there is enough water and the rest is easy peezy, in fact, place all those wonderful watering stations that Janet Napolitano and her posse want to build for the illegals, at regular intervals along the border, between the fences!
Maybe the next time barry stops by for a chat, Gov Brewer can give him a few tips on how to secure the border and what to do with the illegals that are crossing it. She's got more balls than he does.
Between Brewer and good ol' Sheriff Joe, I'm sorely tempted to move back to the Phoenix area...
I mean those are good things, true, but you'd also have to put up with the influx of Californians. Every time California takes a dive we get more. Since Brown is gov'nr again I'm expecting another wave anytime soon, heh.
So we are all armed and now getting a wall build. Don't think the Mexican Army is invading through arizona...
Four thumb downs? heh. Why because I think an armed populace is good defense against invasion? or because I used build instead of built? Typos forever!
