• When he is telling them to go and booh and heckle THE OTHER SIDE, I was like ugh... He must have really thought they had the wrong room at first and then couldn't stand the heckling and asked to go booh someone else. Obamie seriously lacks a backbone and a sense of responsibility.

  Gays need to remember that Bush multiplied AIDS funding. He was one of the most concerned about AIDS issues. Discussion can be made he was overextending our money into that issue, but no one can accuse him of not helping out. So Obama and his go heckle someone else and blame Bush is a fail.

    Bush was indeed generous with AIDS funding....mostly for third world nations (where AIDS is primarily transmitted by heterosexuals). I'm not knocking him for that----that funding was sorely needed, and no doubt saved a great many lives.

    But it has little to do with ensuring equal rights for the gay community here at home.

• I will say this, people make all sorts of jokes about gays & have a notion that they are candyasses. But you will not find a more vindictive, more cut-throat, & more hell bent on revenge group in this nation if they feel pissed on then the gays. They will play dirty, they will get nasty, & they won't blink. See Perez Hilton as 1 example. What is sad is that it usually revolves around politics, their perceived victim status, & AIDS funding, plus Don't Ask Don't Tell thrown in for good measure.

  While it is true that gays have been targeted for abuse, their biggest problem is that they bitch about how crappy we are in terms of gay acceptance here in America, but no country in the world is more gay freindly then America. If they have issues now, they better hope that those who want America to be Sharia compliant don't win the day. There is ZERO tlooerence for homosexuality in the islamic world. They should know who their actual enemy is rather then the one they think they see.

  Why are both issues connected? Because gays are just another liberal group that reacts in a kneejerk manner based on emotion, not on reason, & the fact many view gays as a protect class only adds to thier view.

    Threats about Sharia law are all the rage among the far right these days, but they don't seem to know what the term means. It DOESN'T mean that everybody in the U.S. would be forced to wear burqas and swear allegiance to Allah. In fact, it's nothing more than the Muslim equivalent of the Jewish Beth Din courts that already exist in the U.S. Like the People's Court daytime TV show, a Sharia court is one where two disputing parties can choose to go, if they wish to have a civil dispute settled there. It's an option, not a hostile takeover. ;)

    The issue of gay rights is another thing entirely. Like the Sharia law scare, it's been blown up into a huge bugaboo by right wing political manipulators ("they're gonna force you to be like them!"), but it truly is about equal rights under the law. Homosexuals are merely asking for the same right that every heterosexual enjoys: to marry the individual of their choice, and thereby enjoy all the legal and social benefits of marriage. Call that a "knee jerk" response if you want, but the fact is that the right wing vogue for screaming in terror that Muslims are going to force us to live under Sharia law, and homosexuals are going to "recruit" our children (with the help of union teacher)s, is about as "knee jerk" as it's possible to get.

    And, by the way: "But the U.S. is more gay friendly than other countries" isn't necessarily true, nor is it an excuse for denying equal rights to this particular group. That argument has about as much logic as defending Jim Crow laws a century ago, by saying, "Hey, you got what you wanted, when slavery was abolished permanently. So stop b*tching about the fact that your rights aren't equal to white people's rights."

  • I never understood why they didn't react to Ahmadalgdingbahjah when he said that there were no gays in Iran. THAT is whom they should really go against and try to do what they can for the gay men and the lesbians who are persecuted. Gays are hanged on the streets, or shot or imprisoned in Iran and other Sharia Law countries. Unfortunately a lot of their focus is on the wrong parts of the world and political spectrum. In this country gays are no worst than other groups of people in fact they are better than most of the so called minority groups. NO contemporary law prevents them from enjoying their lifestyle, just as long as it doesnt impede the enjoyment of the lifestyles of others. All this complaining to me make them look petty and entitled. Their running to the govt with their grievances will lead them to nothing good, because the govt can change its mind (so to speak) on how they react to the homosexual community at any moment in time.

      It isn't your place to dictate where someone else should direct their political energy. Those homosexuals who believe (rightly) that there's still plenty of work to do right here at home are entitled to do so. But, hey, if that situation in Iran bothers you, there's nothing to prevent YOU from getting involved in whatever ways you can.

      Homosexuality isn't a "lifestyle"----it's a sexual orientation. And, in fact, there are still laws on the books that target homosexuals but not heterosexuals, as well as socially sanctioned ostracism and bigotry.

      I don't know what rock you've been living under that's prevented you from hearing about it, but it's true. What's more, far right wing groups are still working to get government muscle behind their efforts to drive homosexuality underground. And "Hey, they're not treated any worse than any other marginalized minority group" isn't likely to convince them that they should just knuckle under.

    • KQ, you are spot on. Those who laughed & thought it was a cute remark are too dumb to understand that just being suspected of being gay will get you exicuted in the public square. Maybe that's why there are no gays in Iran, gays in Iran ain't dumb enough to come out.
