Here’s what he says about the newly-released Obama birth certificate:
“I can emphatically tell you that this document is not merely a scan of a document that has been uploaded to the internet. This is a document that has been either put together or taken apart prior to the upload, and even Charles Johnson would have to admit that.”
When BigFurHat, a self-acknowledged PhotoShop and Illustrator expert, shows us incontrovertible evidence that Obama’s 1961 birth certificate shows signs of being created with computer programs that didn’t exist in 1961, we have to listen.
Well, we try to listen, but BigFurHat’s voice is kind of drowned out by the sound of our inner voices screaming, “Dan Rather!”
We’d try to explain this stuff, but we wouldn’t have a clue what we were talking about. And we try to save that for our political commentary.

This would prove to be the biggest scam in American history if the claims of forgery of Obama's birth certificate are substantiated,if true then there are a lot of people that need to go to prison,including the president.
I've never been a "birther". I've always believed that Obama was born in Hawaii and was therefore a US citizen and eligible for the Presidency. Nowhere in ANYTHING I've written have I claimed otherwise.
That said, I DID think it was interesting that Obama refused/delayed the release. I always wondered why he simply didn't release the long-form, "official" certificate when asked and use that to embarrass the "birthers".

Colleges that have information of how good (or bad) a student the king was, if he attended at all. Sealed. What used to be the most revered office of the United states of America has become a joke with a person of questionable integrity, origin, and motive running the show. He works for us. That's ok, I don't need the condensed version. I read whole books, too. And I watched 10 minutes video of it being torn apart. It's a fake. If Obama was born in Hawaii, why, WHY is it so difficult for him to put some genuine documents on the table?

I believe its called "Searchable Text" in Acrobat. Adobe has this entire API for generating layers in PDFs.. all kinds of plugins utilize layering in PDFs for a variety of reasons (beyond OCR). I know all about searchable text in PDF's -- however, in a legal sense, deleting the text layer and overlaying it destroys any legal value the document has. Given the current level of acrimony, I would want something that would stand up in court. This document simply cannot stand up in court for anything past the first question: "Can you guarantee that the text image you deleted is the same as the text you inserted?"
The correct method is to leave the entire image as an image, and store the OCr'd text as an attribute. In order to maintain the integrity, you should then compute SHA256 on both text and image, and store those as attributes of the doc, and then store the doc in a content addressable storage like Centera or NetApp. That, or save to optical.
I cannot say whether it is genuine, but handling it this way was amateurish, and with a number of lawyers on hand in the administration, they certainly should have known better. All goes back to the old problem of "just because you *can* do it doesn't mean you *should* do it."
Tis a fine hash you select, but we both know that even immediately successive image scans aren't going to produce the same signature (any likelihood of this would've given the NSA pause 10 years ago). If you can't reproduce the input (i.e. scan generated bits) exactly, you can't reproduce the signature, and you break the chain of verification back to the physical document.
If any authority holds my own signature on file and I can't reproduce it, my worth as a signature generating agent decays rapidly in the eyes of said authority (unless some out-of-band appeal is made to rekey myself ;)
But this debates the point on the wrong level. Even if you can convey to the Excited-by-Layers crew that your crypto's application, in this case, is signature production and verification, you have to dispel irrational fears of forgery at every step in the process. You have to deal with people that think the Administration exploits some backdoor provided by the NSA. Centera or NetApp's operations would come under all kinds of casual and inartful scrutiny. Any detail you provide to address concerns would merely enhance the neural tangling of conspiracy's web.
My main point here is that you, Perlcat, would probably succeed in convincing IHTM'ers of the validity of your process, mainly due to the trust you've earned here on this site. But I have my doubts about birthers beyond your reach. Even cryptography involves trust, or attempts to make it portable (I trust the bearer of this signing key.. i trust you selected a hash function that resists collisions..)
If one thinks Obama's maliciously bent on destroying the country, its easier to believe he's lying about his birth. Or, conversely, if he's seen as a foreign imposter, its easier to believe in dark plots. Demonizations compound. I don't believe either. Do i think he's out of his league? Yeah, most of the time. Did i think the same about Bush? Yep.

Ah, such is the nature of conspiracy theorists. Not sure if I should feel sad or happy for them -- they certainly seem like they are happy keeping themselves busy. As long as they stay in their Mom's basement, I guess they will be all right.
I think that part of the reason for *finding* conspiracies is exactly as Levine was saying -- people apply their own meaning and frame of reference to raw data, and come up with their own worldview that suits their needs, not unlike springing from the forehead of Zeus.
No one will ever be able to completely satisfy minds like that -- too much desperation for wish fulfillment holds them to it. However, it isn't fair to mischaracterize all of the people taking part in the controversy as nuts -- a person doesn't have to be nuts to have an opinion, a theory, or just innocent curiosity. I think that a certain amount of cynical crowd manipulation has gone on from Obama's side, just as The Donald manipulated it into more notoriety for himself. It's easier to work with straw men if you have volunteers clamoring to be the straw men.
Cool link -- I think I will stay away from the Ra math, though -- too much like the numbers 2 and 3 in the Illuminatus Trilogy. Just like those numbers, if someone ever comes up with a mathematical explanation, it will be reviled by the conspiracy theorists, and they will happily "show" the world why the proof is wrong, and *proves* there's a cover up.
yeah i think you're spot on there. Obama & cohort strung along the birthplace issue as long as they could--a honeypot for partisan foes. But Trump, casino guy and slick beyond most measures, upped the ante. He began taking a bite out of Independents' Obama trust, and scared Obama into requesting the Long Form
The key word here is 'scared'. If he can be scared, he can be controlled.
The whole argument was not a very presidential thing to do -- this result was, after all, predictable. A lot like wrecking Dad's car, you can only put off the inevitable for so long before the truth rears its ugly head.
In my conservative fantasies, I would dream that the people that understand how to control him would control him in a manner helpful to the country. However, my inner cynic takes over, and I figure that if I understand how to manipulate him, that people with more power and resources already *know*, and already are doing it.

One part of the freak show otherwise known as 'Election 2008' that makes this whole mess possible is that both McCain and Obama have questionable birth issues. If either would have had been born under no 'iffy' circumstances, to two citizen parents, within the borders of the US, the other one would have been invalidated.
Since it was a case of Tweedledum running against Tweedledee, both of them went a lot further than they should.
