Helping the Obama administration practice obfuscation reality enhancement

The Obama administration speaks fluent obfuscation

When President Obama promised “change,” no one knew he wanted to change the names of things that are clearly understood to names that are…well…clearly not understood.

“Global War on Terror” became “overseas contingency operation.” “Terrorism” became “man-caused disaster.” Now the Treasury wants “toxic assets” to be called “legacy assets” name and the CDC wants “swine flu” to be called “H1N1.”

Unfortunately, no one’s buying these names. Not even the biased liberal media. When was the last time you heard Katie Couric report an overseas contingency operation?

Eric Swartz, the San Francisco-based TaglineGuru, wants to help. So he came up with some ideas to help the Obama administration rebrand other policy terms. Some of his suggestions:

Detainees: Custodial informants
Terrorists: Improvised ideologues
Deficit: Long shortfall (or inverted surplus)
One trillion dollars: Nth power financing
Border violence: Territorial imperative
Torture: Non-verbal questioning
Taxes: Income tweaks

We like it. Or as they might say in the Obama administration, it’s favorability enhanced.

New Obama policy requires twisting of logic and tongues

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, Sunni Islamic scholar Sheik Yousuf Al-Qaradhawi recently delivered a sermon on Qatari TV. Here’s part of what he said:

A few days ago, a Muslim asked me if we were allowed to possess WMDs — nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. I said to him: “Yes, we must possess such weapons, but not use them.” We must possess such weapons in order to strike terror in our enemies–“Strike terror in the hearts of the enemies,” and frighten them.

Obviously, the sermon must have been delivered prior to the Obama administration’s decision that terrorist acts are no longer to be called terrorist acts, but rather “man-caused disasters.”

Just as obviously, this new terminology will cause twisting of both logic and tongues. Because if the act is now called a “man-caused disaster,” what do you call the person who commits the act?

A man-caused disaster-er?

Obama’s Homeland Security Secretary wipes out terrorism. It’s now a “man-caused disaster.”

Two months in office and President Obama has already wiped out terrorism. Who knew it would be this easy?

You see, the President’s Homeland Security Secretary thinks the word terrorism isn’t very nice, that it represents those darned old-fashioned “politics of fear.” So she wiped out terrorism with a stroke of her pen…or her tongue.

Don’t get us wrong. Janet Napolitano didn’t do anything that will save any lives or make us any safer or stop any of the bad guys. She just eliminated it from her vocabulary and renamed it a “man-caused disaster.”

Here’s what she told the German magazine Der Spiegel:

Der Spiegel: Madame Secretary, in your first testimony to the US Congress as Homeland Security Secretary you never mentioned the word “terrorism.” Does Islamist terrorism suddenly no longer pose a threat to your country?

Napolitano: Of course it does. I presume there is always a threat from terrorism. In my speech, although I did not use the word “terrorism,” I referred to “man-caused” disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur.

Seriously. So from now on, it’s not terrorism. It’s a man-caused disaster. So we assume they’re not terrorists anymore, either, but man-caused disaster makers…or doers…causers…or whatever.

Somebody out there help us here. Is this more of that change we can believe in?
