Europe’s euphoria for Obama cooling

Shock! Horror! Disappointment! The Obamessiah is not who the Europeans thought he was.

Barack Obama’s inauguration was held January 21 in Washington, DC. But his coronation was held in Germany way back on July 24, 2008 in Berlin. Now the Europeans’ Obamamania may be cooling.

Here’s how the German magazine Der Spiegel puts it:

Europe was ecstatic when Barack Obama got elected, but the enthusiasm has dampened since he took office in January. On the eve of his first visit to Europe as president, some here are wondering how seriously he takes the Continent.

The Der Spiegel article continued:

When Obama arrives in London on Tuesday for the start of his one-week visit to Europe, he’ll come as a friend, but as one who is still in some ways a stranger. Europe backed his election campaign more enthusiastically than most other parts of the world. But the White House has been too preoccupied coping with domestic crises to devote much attention to this region in the first two months of Obama’s presidency.

And later:

Still, the Obama skeptics in Europe are having a field day. “The notion that Europe is going to rally around this administration is being exploded,” Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, told the Washington Post. Indeed, a feeling of skepticism regarding Obama’s new Afghanistan strategy and his proposals for solving the financial crisis has been making itself felt.

Hillary Clinton read the Der Spiegel article and said, “No problem, Barack. Just take ‘em another one of those reset buttons. They really love those things over there.”

Obama’s Homeland Security Secretary wipes out terrorism. It’s now a “man-caused disaster.”

Two months in office and President Obama has already wiped out terrorism. Who knew it would be this easy?

You see, the President’s Homeland Security Secretary thinks the word terrorism isn’t very nice, that it represents those darned old-fashioned “politics of fear.” So she wiped out terrorism with a stroke of her pen…or her tongue.

Don’t get us wrong. Janet Napolitano didn’t do anything that will save any lives or make us any safer or stop any of the bad guys. She just eliminated it from her vocabulary and renamed it a “man-caused disaster.”

Here’s what she told the German magazine Der Spiegel:

Der Spiegel: Madame Secretary, in your first testimony to the US Congress as Homeland Security Secretary you never mentioned the word “terrorism.” Does Islamist terrorism suddenly no longer pose a threat to your country?

Napolitano: Of course it does. I presume there is always a threat from terrorism. In my speech, although I did not use the word “terrorism,” I referred to “man-caused” disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur.

Seriously. So from now on, it’s not terrorism. It’s a man-caused disaster. So we assume they’re not terrorists anymore, either, but man-caused disaster makers…or doers…causers…or whatever.

Somebody out there help us here. Is this more of that change we can believe in?
