At least that’s our take away from this anecdote in the New York Times:
In the compound, Mr. [Barry Soetoro] Obama often played with the two sons of the physician’s driver. One time, recalled the elder son, Slamet Januadi, now 52, Mr. Obama asked a group of boys whether they wanted to grow up to be president, a soldier or a businessman. A president would own nothing while a soldier would possess weapons and a businessmen would have money, the young Obama explained.
Mr. Januadi and his younger brother, both of whom later joined the Indonesian military, said they wanted to become soldiers. Another boy, a future banker, said he would become a businessman.
“Then Barry said he would become president and order the soldier to guard him and the businessman to use his money to build him something,” Mr. Januadi said. “We told him, ‘You cheated. You didn’t give us those details.’ ”
“But we all became what we said we would,” he said.
Yes, one became a banker, one became a soldier and one became a confiscatory leftist who thinks others are there to help him fulfill his redistributionist dreams.
That’s a beautiful childhood memory, damn it, and we found ourselves tearing up just a little bit as we read it.

When a guy reaches the ripe old age of 40 with no accomplishments on his record yet still manages to churn out two autobiographies, you’d think he’d need to dredge up every possible story from his past to fill a few pages.

But, no, not if that man is Barack Obama. If you’re Barack Obama, your life has been so eventful that you actually need to suppress a few memories.

…Mr Obama attended classes on Islam while the Christians attended classes on Christianity, said Effendi. Barry, he said, was alone among the pupils in that he insisted on attending both.
“His mother did not like him learning Islam, although his father was a Muslim. Sometimes she came to the school; she was angry with the religious teacher and said ‘Why did you teach him the Koran?’” said Effendi.
“But he kept going to the classes because he was interested in Islam. He would also join the other pupils for Muslim prayers.”
Yup. We’re going with the suppressed memory concept. We’re sure that it was traumatic for the young lad and he was merely suppressing the memories to avoid the pain they trigger.
It appears that Obama’s approval ratings in Indonesia are following the same trajectory they’re following in the United States.
About as well, we’d say, as that hope and change thing is working out here in the United States.
You might remember back in 2007 when candidate Barack Obama, said, “Instead of retreating from the world, I will personally lead a new chapter of American engagement. It is time to offer the world a message of hope to counter the prophets of hate. My experience has brought me to the hopeless places. As a boy, I lived in Indonesia and played barefoot with children who could not dream the same dreams that I did.”
Maybe we misinterpreted the speech. We thought he was talking about the Muslim world when he talked about “the hopeless places.” Subsequent events indicate that he may have been talking about Detroit.
Based on the Washington Post article above, it appears that Obama’s approval ratings in Indonesia are following the same trajectory they’re following in the United States.

Should President Obama delay his Indonesian trip to satisfy House Democrats? Or should he cancel is completely to satisfy protesting Indonesians?
Politico reports on the House Democrats:
Last week, the president pushed back his planned Friday departure three days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats groused he was leaving at a critical time.
“For the first time in eight months, the president is finally getting his hands dirty, and now he’s going to hop on the plane? Please,” said a Democratic congressman, requesting anonymity.
“These deadlines are sort of silly,” the member added. “Remember the first one? March 18th? That was sort of like putting a calendar on [White House chief of staff] Rahm’s [Emanuel’s] back and inviting members to throw darts at him.”
Another Democrat told POLITICO bluntly, “This trip is really getting in the way of things.”
Ahhh, but if the Democrats think they’re pissed off about Obama’s Indonesian trip, they should talk to some Indonesians.

Thousands of Indonesian Muslims have staged peaceful rallies in cities across the country to protest US President Barack Obama’s visit later this month.
Around 2,000 protesters from the hardline Muslim group Hizbut Tahrir, which aims to establish a Muslim caliphate, shouted “Islam united… will not be defeated. Reject Obama” and tore printouts of the American flag as they marched around the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar on Sunday.
In Central Java’s Solo city, another 500 of the group’s supporters carried posters saying “Expel Obama.. leader of coloniser” and “America.. The Real Terrorists”.
“There are two types of visitors, good and bad. Obama is bad. He might be of a different skin colour from George Bush, but he still oppressed the Muslims,” the group’s spokesman Nur Alam said, referring to former US president George W. Bush.
Hey, wait just a second. Didn’t Obama apologize to the Muslim world? We thought they love us now.
There’s only one way to solve this problem, President Obama. Go over there to Indonesia and give them another speech. Because that approach has worked sooooo well for you on ObamaCare.

Indonesian authorities, who just one month ago erected a bronze statue of President Obama as a boy, are now considering a petition to tear it down.

AFP reports the dismantling details:
Critics say the site should have been used to honour an Indonesian and 55,000 people have joined a page on social networking website Facebook calling for the statue to be removed.
“We’ve been discussing for the past two weeks what to do with the statue… whether to take it down, move it elsewhere or retain it. We’re finding the best solution,” Jakarta parks agency official Dwi Bintarto said.
The story continues:
“The statue is of Obama as a child, not as the US president. His relatives and friends who erected it said it’s meant to motivate children to study hard and dream big,” Bintarto said.
Members of the “Take Down the Barack Obama Statue in Menteng Park” group on Facebook say Obama has done nothing for Indonesia.
“Barack Obama has yet to make a significant contribution to the Indonesian nation. We could say Obama only ate and s (expletive) in Menteng. He spent his subsequent days living as an American,” the web page says.
“For the dignity of a sovereign nation, Barack Obama’s monument in Menteng Park must be removed immediately.”
The Indonesians need to relax. Based on Obama’s experience as President, the statue will undoubtedly do something to bring itself down after about a year.

ABC’s Jake Tapper gives the tale a decidedly liberal twist on his blog:
A six-and-a-half foot statue of President Obama as a 10-year-old boy has been commissioned in Jakarta, Xinhua reports.
The president spent some of his formative years there as a boy, where he was educated at a school that was decidedly not a madrassa, despite some false reports pushed by conservative news outlets two years ago.
A group called “Friends of Obama” made the announcement today, saying the statue will be inaugurated on December 10 in a playground in the Jakarta suburb Menteng Dalam, where Obama lived from 1967 until 1971 with his mother and stepfather.
“The statue is designed to inspire Indonesian children that they can be anyone they want to be,” said Friends of Obama chairman Ron Muller.
And, of course, Obama Safe School Czar Kevin Jennings was inspired when saw the words “erect” and “boy” in the same sentence.
