About as well, we’d say, as that hope and change thing is working out here in the United States.
You might remember back in 2007 when candidate Barack Obama, said, “Instead of retreating from the world, I will personally lead a new chapter of American engagement. It is time to offer the world a message of hope to counter the prophets of hate. My experience has brought me to the hopeless places. As a boy, I lived in Indonesia and played barefoot with children who could not dream the same dreams that I did.”
Maybe we misinterpreted the speech. We thought he was talking about the Muslim world when he talked about “the hopeless places.” Subsequent events indicate that he may have been talking about Detroit.
Based on the Washington Post article above, it appears that Obama’s approval ratings in Indonesia are following the same trajectory they’re following in the United States.
