The best newspaper correction ever (Hey, wait a second. Are they making fun of us Trekkies?)

Do we detect the slightest little hint of sarcasm in this Australian newspaper’s correction? We hope not, because as everyone knows, the original Star Trek was the greatest program in the history of television.

We’re sorry for claiming Captain Kirk was in command of Captain Picard’s starship

Next thing you know, they'll confuse the Klingons and the Romulans

YESTERDAY, a news.com.au article incorrectly stated that the Star Trek starship USS Enterprise-E, otherwise known as model NNC-1701-E, was the successor to Captain Kirk’s original USS Enterprise. It has since been brought to our attention that the NNC-1701-E in fact came two models after Captain Kirk retired and was under the command of Captain Jean Luc Picard.

Read the original, poorly-researched article here

User “Your Mum’s Lunch” led the charge of those who correctly pointed out that after losing the original Enterprise to the Klingons, Captain Kirk was given the Excelsior Class Enterprise-B as a stop-gap measure until the refit of the Enterprise-A was completed.

Kirk’s last ship was the Ambassador Class Enterprise-C.

Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E were in fact, the first of the Galaxy Class models and were under the command of Captain Picard.

There were also some concerns about whether the incorrect use of the term “hyperspace” in describing warp drive technology may harm the original Star Trek concept, particularly the books.

News.com.au apologises unreservedly for the error.

There was no intention whatsoever to suggest Captain Kirk may have commanded the Galaxy Class Starships Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E.

Any damage to the Star Trek brand incurred by the use of the term “hyperspace” is regretful.

No malice was intended and a correction to the original article will be made.

We also agree that Patrick Stewart is a handsome man, a sentiment expressed by several readers.

Addendum – We’re also sorry for any errors in this apology.

Patrick Stewart handsome? Piffle. We’re pretty sure that alien women prefer Captain Kirk twenty-to-one.

Times of London turns Star Trek review in political statement: “Star Trek boldly goes into the Obama era”

Don’t you hate critics who review “films” instead of “movies.” You know, those self-important nimrods who think they’re too smart by half and wear out their thesauruses (thesauri?) in an attempt to convince you of the same thing.

The Times of London just ran one of those reviews on the new Star Trek movie that premieres May 8.

(One disclaimer: we are not ashamed to say that we are long-time Trekkies. We don’t even attempt to hide behind the supposedly more dignified name “Trekker.”)

Let’s just go with one paragraph of this freshman poly sci term paper disguised as a movie review:

There was always a very close relationship between the American Dream — not to mention American imperialism — and Star Trek, with its liberal, secular, multiracial, technophiliac vision of the future. But the two seem almost to have mind-melded with the election of an optimistic, liberal, multiracial President with a Kenyan father and a white American mother (Star Trek featured the first interracial kiss on US television, sparking protests at the time) — and, who is himself something of a 1960s tribute act, with his JFK and Martin Luther King cadences. Suddenly, with Barack Obama at the helm, America looks like a brand that people can believe in again. Or at least root for at the movies.

For God’s sake, it’s just a friggin’ movie, Limey Boy. It’s cowboys and Indians in outer space. Good guys versus bad guys. White hats versus black hats.

Read the whole thing. Just to remind yourself why newspapers are neither living long nor prospering.

We have to go now. Advance tickets just went on sale downtown for the May 8 opening.

Does Chris Matthews fantasize Obama is Captain Kirk (and he’s a sexy green alien girl)?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLQM8NKrHuwChris Matthews revealed a little too much about himself on Wednesday night’s Hardball.

“The Conservative Political Action Conference begins its three day meeting tomorrow in Washington,” Matthews stammered, “and take a look at some of the panels being offered. ‘Al Franken and ACORN: How Liberals Are Destroying the American Election System.’ ‘Will Congress Take Your Guns?’ ‘The True Cost of Global Warming Hysteria.’ If you like Star Trek conventions, you’ll love this baby.”

Sounds to us like Chris may have attended a Star Trek convention or two in his time. Probably in costume. If that’s the case, we have a suggestion for him: Try following Spock’s example and use logic once in a while. It could change your life.

Now would someone please put their phaser on stun and shut this guy up?
