Great Britain demonstrates that spending money on wind power is like pissing into the wind

Smart folks like Barack Obama love ideas like wind power. It give them a chance to pay back the bros at windmill-maker GE. What could go wrong? Everything

Smart folks like Barack Obama love ideas like wind power. No dirty fossil fuels, no emissions, no carbon dioxide (something plants need, but hell, they don’t vote) and a chance to pay back the bros at windmill-maker GE. What could go wrong? Everything.

The green armada may be able to accomplish what the Spanish Armada couldn't

Ace reveals the realities discovered by the British utilizing windmills to lower CO2 emissions:

Problem One. Wind Power isn’t cost effective compared to fossil fuel plants. The only way wind turbines get built is if somebody (via higher electric bills) subsidizes them.

Problem Two. Wind Power isn’t consistent. In the Brit winter you might have 4-5 day periods when little or no wind is blowing. The rest of the time, output will fluctuate greatly which Just Doesn’t Work with a power grid. So you need backup power for your wind turbines.

Problem Three. Not only do you have to pay for 17 gigawatts of wind farms you also have to build and pay for 17 gigawatts of backup gas turbine plants.

[Backup turbines] have the ability to quickly move from idling to full power to compensate for the erratic wind turbines…. The turbines emit more CO2 when they’re idling than when they’re at full power…. The CO2 emitted while idling wipes out any savings you could get from the wind farms!

Spending lots of money to gain exactly nothing – another example of the “brilliance” of the political class, a bunch of silly pompous dicks who live to piss in the wind.

Unfortunately, the taxpayers are the ones whose shoes are getting wet.

Green energy update: It don’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. Or don’t blow.

They said the world was running out of oil and wind power was the answer. Damn it. Now it looks like the world’s running out of wind, too.

Greens were soooo confident that they had finally come up with a winning argument when they said the world was running out of oil and wind power was the answer. Damn it. Now it looks like the world’s running out of wind, too.

Hmmmmm. What happens to offshore wind farms when they're lost to rising sea levels?

The Telegraph UK tells about the latest ill winds blowing for the green movement:

According to government figures, 13 of the past 16 months have been calmer than normal – while 2010 was the “stillest” year of the past decade.

Meteorologists believe that changes to the Atlantic jet stream could alter the pattern of winds over the next 40 years and leave much of the nation’s growing army of power-generating turbines becalmed…

Last year, wind speeds over the UK averaged 7.8 knots (8.9mph), a fall of 20 per cent on 2008, and well below the mean for this century, which stands at 9.1 knots (10.5mph)…

Meteorologists have found that the position of the jet stream has been influenced by the lower levels of activity on the Sun.

The sun? The sun? What kind of poppycock is that? What could the sun possibly have to do with the earth’s climate?

Damn deniers.

Environmental civil war: Wind farmers vs. bird lovers

What happens when animal advocates run smack dab into wind farm advocates? Or to state the question a bit more precisely, what happens when birds run smack dab into wind mills. Civil war, that’s what.

In 1861, the American Civil War broke out at Fort Sumter. 150 years later, the Environmental Civil War broke out in Spain.

The Daily Caller has the avian information:

On Tuesday an international bird watchdog group based in Spain, Save the Eagles International (STEI), warned that the expected construction of 3.5 million wind turbines worldwide will result in the extinction of a variety of bird species.

STEI is calling for a moratorium on all wind farm construction and an investigation into whether the threat to wildlife is worth the amount of energy produced — when, they say, there are so many other, more efficient sources of energy.

Which sources would those be? Nuclear’s unacceptable to environmentalists. They want hydro-electric dams destroyed. Coal’s a non-starter. Oil won’t fly.

According to STEI it is a fallacy to compare wind turbine bird deaths to other sources of bird carnage such as automobiles and high windows, as wind turbine construction is optional.

“[M]ortality caused by windfarms and their power lines is new and additional”, said STEI president Mark Duchamp. “[A]nd like the proverbial last drop that spills the glass, its effects will be upsetting. To wit the Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle, which has been condemned to extinction by the construction of seven windfarms in its habitat.”

Nooooooooo! Not the Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle! It’s our favorite of all the wedge-tailed eagles.

Yeah, but … yeah, but … yeah, but the wind is natural

Nuclear fatalities in the last ten years: 7. Wind farm fatalities in the last ten years: 44. In those ten years nuclear provided thirty times the energy of wind.

Anyone who remembers Jane Fonda’s outstanding performance in China Syndrome knows that nuclear power is dangerous.  Very, very dangerous. It’s a damn killer is what it is. In fact, the only thing more dangerous than a dose of radiation is a dose of perspective.

James Delingpole, an oasis in a desert of political correctnes

British columnist James Delingpole explains what we mean:

Nuclear fatalities in the last ten years: 7
Wind farm fatalities in the last ten years: 44.

In those ten years nuclear provided thirty times the energy of wind. This means in the last decade, nuclear has been around 200 times safer than wind on an energy produced/accidents basis.

Note: Wind farm statistics include neither birds killed by turning blades nor eco-wackos killed by the turn of events.

Denmark proves wind power just a bunch of hot air

How to generate wind power when the wind doesn't blow.
How to generate wind power when the wind doesn't blow.

The global warming crowd constantly bleats that wind power is our salvation and to complete the analogy, that we should follow Denmark’s example like a bunch of sheep.

“Denmark’s wind generation industry already employs 9000 people,” said Australian Green leader Bob Brown, “will nicet (sic) 10% of electricity demand by 2000, and is growing at 20% per annum. It’s a major export earner.”

Not so fast. Turns out Denmark’s windmill miracle is more hot air than hot news. When the recalcitrant winds refuse to blow, the country draws its power from Sweden, Germany and Norway.

Uh-oh. Sweden and Germany generate their power with coal and nuclear.

Another uh-oh. Under the Kyoto Protocol, Denmark committed itself to a 29% reduction in green house gasses in the 2008-2012 period. Even with outsourcing their power production to other countries, the country’s 2006 emissions rose 1.7% above its base year emissions.

Of course, as you might expect, Danes pay the highest prices in all of Europe for their power.

This may not be scientific, but it looks like the only way this wind power thing is going to work is if Al Gore puckers up and blows.

Leading climate change scientist says carbon offsets won’t work, “Enjoy life while you can”

James Lovelock says, "The world is doomed, so let's party, dude."
James Lovelock says, "The world is doomed, so let's party, dude."

On one hand, renowned climate expert James Lovelock thinks the global warming will destroy the world. On the other hand, he thinks all the political solutions are a scam.

The Guardian UK reports Lovelock’s heresy:

He dismisses eco ideas briskly, one by one. “Carbon offsetting? I wouldn’t dream of it. It’s just a joke. To pay money to plant trees, to think you’re offsetting the carbon? You’re probably making matters worse. You’re far better off giving to the charity Cool Earth, which gives the money to the native peoples to not take down their forests.”

Do he and his wife try to limit the number of flights they take? “No we don’t. Because we can’t.” And recycling, he adds, is “almost certainly a waste of time and energy”, while having a “green lifestyle” amounts to little more than “ostentatious grand gestures”. He distrusts the notion of ethical consumption. “Because always, in the end, it turns out to be a scam … or if it wasn’t one in the beginning, it becomes one.”

The Guardian continues:

You’re never going to get enough energy from wind to run a society such as ours,” he says. “Windmills! Oh no. No way of doing it. You can cover the whole country with the blasted things, millions of them. Waste of time.”

So given all this, what would Lovelock do now? “Enjoy life while you can. Because if you’re lucky it’s going to be 20 years before it hits the fan.”

A round of applause for James Lovelock for his honesty. Anyone Al Gore disagrees with is alright with us.
