The theory behind it is that if taxpayers are required to get drug tested at work, then the people supported by their tax dollars should be required to meet the same strict standards. The bill also requires that those who apply for welfare must pay for the drug testing out of their own pockets. However, the cost would be reimbursed if the person passes the drug test.
Republicans said the measure was needed because if taxpayers are screened at their place of employment, so should welfare recipients. The drug testing bill was a priority for Scott.
“While there are certainly legitimate needs for public assistance, it is unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction,” Governor Scott said. “This new law will encourage personal accountability and will help to prevent the misuse of tax dollars.”
Next stop? We say candidates for political office should also be drug tested.

Yes, good ol’ Uncle Sam now offers free home repairs to low income families. In theory, the grants are money savers because those families often live in drafty homes and have high heating bills. In reality, we’re pretty sure it’s just another way to pound money down a rat hole and all the insulation in the world won’t plug that hole.
Here, according to eHow.com, are the five easy-peasy steps necessary to suck a few more bucks from the government teat through the Energy Assistance Program:

1. The home repair program provides licensed contractors to seal attics, walls, floors, air ducts, cover water heaters and other basic maintenance. This program, is designed to save low income families, about $300 a year in energy costs.

2. Check your state: Contact the department of Energy in your state, for further information on the Weatherization Assistance Program [Energy Assistance] or home repair grants in your area.
3. Qualifications: To be eligible for a home repair grant or help to winterized your home, your income must be below 125% to 150%. Some states will vary in the income qualifications.
4. The application: The application process is very simple. You must provide proof of income, unemployment, ownership or renting, to be considered for the program.
5. Acceptance: Once you have been approved for a home repair grant, local agencies will come to your home to be assess possible heat loss, carbon monoxide leaks and a plan of action will be designed to weatherize your home.
Hey, here’s an idea. Maybe you can call all the free government contractors on your free government cell phone while you’re driving around in your free government car.

Even before the recession, immigrant households with children used welfare programs at consistently higher rates than natives, according to the extensive census data collected and analyzed by a nonpartisan Washington D.C. group dedicated to researching legal and illegal immigration in the U.S. The results, published this month in a lengthy report, are hardly surprising.
… The study focused on eight major welfare programs that cost the government $517 billion the year they were examined. They include Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the disabled, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), a nutritional program known as Women, Infants and Children (WIC), food stamps, free/reduced school lunch, public housing and health insurance for the poor (Medicaid).
Food assistance and Medicaid are the programs most commonly used by illegal immigrants, mainly on behalf of their American-born children who get automatic citizenship.
We give, they take. From the parasite’s point of view, it’s a symbiotic relationship.

In the last couple of year, they’ve drawn $69 million in California welfare payments while out of state. Hell, out of state wouldn’t even be so bad if they weren’t pissing your money away in casinos and on cruises and shopping sprees.

More than $69 million in California welfare money, meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children, has been spent or withdrawn outside the state in recent years, including millions in Las Vegas, hundreds of thousands in Hawaii and thousands on cruise ships sailing from Miami.
State-issued aid cards have been used at hotels, shops, restaurants, ATMs and other places in 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, according to data obtained by The Times from the California Department of Social Services. Las Vegas drew $11.8 million of the cash benefits, far more than any other destination. The money was accessed from January 2007 through May 2010.

Genetic sequencing of sea sponges from the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef showed the ancient marine animal shared many of its genes with humans, including a large number typically associated with disease and cancer.
Lead researcher Bernard Degnan, of the University of Queensland, said the findings “would shed light on a whole range of different things,” and could lay the foundation for breakthroughs in cancer and stem cell research.
“Sponges have what’s (considered) the ‘Holy Grail’ of stem cells,” Degnan told AFP.

Much to our surprise, it’s generated more controversy and more comments than any other story we’ve ever done (you really should read some of the thousands of comments. Frankly, it’s astonishing).

Now Colorado is thinking about enrolling its poor in the same program.
The Denver Post reports:
“If approved, the plan by TracFone Wireless in Miami would make Colorado the 17th state it has settled into with free cell service for the indigent, a form of wireless welfare that proponents say taps into one of the last untapped markets for the telecom technology.
“Our hope is to have it up and running by September,” said Jose Fuentes, TracFone’s director of government relations. “Historically, it’s a very underutilized service, and we’d like that to change.”
In Colorado, it’s called LITAP — the Low Income Telephone Assistance Program — and is available to anyone receiving aid from any of six welfare funds…
The bad news is that you’re paying for this via the Universal Service Fund, one of those mysterious line item taxes listed on your monthly phone bill.
The good news is that you soon won’t have any money left and you’ll qualify for a free cell phone.

First Massachusetts gave ‘em welfare, then they gave ‘em food stamps, then they gave them free cell phones through Safelink Wireless, then they gave ‘em free cars. And now, they’re spending $2,000,000 per month to house the homeless in motels.

A record number of families are being put up in motels in Massachusetts. High unemployment and the rising number of home foreclosures is the reason the state is taking this action.
Housing Massachusetts’ homeless is costing tax payers around $2 million per month. It costs an average of $85 per night to have families, including nearly 1000 children, stay in motels.
The Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness admits that the use of motels for the homeless is not ideal, but is the best that can be done at this time.
Homeless advocates are worried that families are not getting the support of shelters with living rooms, kitchens, and play areas.
This looks like a self-defeating proposition to us:
Give everything to those who have nothing by taxing those who do have something until they don’t have anything.

A few months ago we were appalled by a government program that gives a free cell phone and free minutes to the loosely-defined poor. Well, not to be outdone, Massachusetts is now giving them free cars.
Here’s how the Boston Herald explains the details of this welfare fiasco:
Immensely unpopular Democrat Gov Deval Patrick, may soon qualify for this program because he's going to be unemployed after the next election.
Gov. Deval Patrick’s free wheels for welfare recipients program is revving up despite the stalled economy, as the keys to donated cars loaded with state-funded insurance, repairs and even AAA membership are handed out to get them to work.
But the program – fueled by a funding boost despite the state’s fiscal crash – allows those who end up back on welfare to keep the cars anyway.
“It’s mind-boggling. You’ve got people out there saying, ‘I just lost my job. Hey, can I get a free car, too?’ ” said House Minority Leader Brad Jones (R-North Reading).
The Herald added:
The state pays for the car’s insurance, inspection, excise tax, title, registration, repairs and a AAA membership for one year at a total cost of roughly $6,000 per car.
The program, which started in 2006, distributes cars donated by non-profit charities such as Good News Garage, a Lutheran charity, which also does the repair work on the car and bills the state.
No president has ever understood the welfare system better than Barack Obama. Because somehow, our new President and his missus managed to bring home $201,913 for jobs they didn’t perform.
Lest we be accused of being inaccurate, let’s admit that President Obama did spend about 12 minutes doing the actual work of a United Sates Senator in 2008. He showed up to cast a vote or two when he was campaigning somewhere near Washington, DC. For that Herculean effort, he was paid $139,204.
But Michelle, well, that’s a different story. She took home $62,709 from the University of Chicago Hospitals. To repeat, she didn’t work a lick, but still took home $62,709. That’s not bad work if you can get it.
In fact, after she resigned her position, her job was eliminated. I’m sure Michelle would say it was eliminated because she couldn’t be replaced. But it’s much more likely that the job was eliminated because it wasn’t a real job in the first place.
So on one hand, these two got paid for work they didn’t do. And on the other hand, they see nothing wrong with increasing your taxes for the work you did do.
It all starts to make sense now.
