How’s that Muslim outreach going? Al Jazeera headlines article “Emperor Obama vs the Arab people”

According to Al Jazeera, President Obama’s even less popular in the Arab world than he is in the United States.

President Obama made his Cairo speech soon after taking office. Then he used his unparalleled powers of persuasion again a couple weeks ago to speak out to the Muslim world once again.

Anyone know how to say "Hope and change" in Arabic?

While dubbing his speech Winds of Change, in reference to the uprisings ongoing across the Arab World, his speech made it clear that the same winds were not yet blowing in Washington DC, and perhaps never will. President Obama’s second speech on the Arab world, delivered on 19 May, showed such constancy and lack of change in US policy as his first speech, delivered in Cairo on 4 June 2009. This is not to say that the two speeches lacked flair and imperial hubris in the delivery, but rather that their characteristic lack of substance or novelty, let alone their decorative and gratuitous verbosity, demonstrate that imperial climate control in Washington can never be “changed”, not even by the wind of the Arab uprisings.

The problem with US policy in the Arab world is not only its insistence on broadcasting credulous US propaganda – easily fed to Americans, yet with few takers elsewhere in the world – but also that it continues to show a complete lack of familiarity with Arab political culture and insists on insulting the intelligence of most Arabs, whom it claims to address directly with speeches such as Mr Obama’s.

… When Obama speaks of how America’s “short-term interests” in the region, at times, “don’t align perfectly with our long-term vision for the region”, he is peddling the biggest imperial lie of all. America’s short- and long-term interests in the region have always been control of oil resources, securing US profits, and defending Israel. Until “winds of change” blow on these interests, the position of the United States as the most powerful anti-democratic force in the Arab World will remain the same, Emperor Obama’s speeches notwithstanding.

Uh-oh. Looks like the Muslim world has figured out the same thing American voters have figured out:

Hope and change is really smoke and mirrors.

Obama administration boycotts Fox News, but admits it has “a great relationship” with Al-Jazeera

The Obama administration, which refuses to allow any of its representatives to appear on Fox News, proudly boasts that it has “a great relationship” with the anti-American Al-Jazeera television network.

Figures. The Obama administration, which refuses to allow any of its representatives to appear on Fox News, proudly boasts that it has “a great relationship” with the anti-American Al-Jazeera television network.

"Excellent," the Emir of Qatar thought. "He said it just the way I told him to."

Politicom.com has the defining story:

Seven years after then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the broadcaster’s reporting “vicious, inaccurate and inexcusable” and President George W. Bush joked about bombing it, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised it as “real news” in her recent Senate testimony.

Not only that, her staffers, as well as those of the CIA and the Obama White House, were attending the Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner as Al-Jazeera’s guests.

“They are a really important media entity, and we have a really great relationship with them,” said Dana Shell Smith, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for international media engagement, who speaks Arabic and has frequently appeared on the channel. “This administration has empowered those of us who actually do the communicating to be in a close relationship with Al-Jazeera. They understand that the relationship can’t consist of complaining to each other about the differences we have.”

… “The emir of Qatar come by the Oval Office today, and he owns Al-Jazeera basically,” Obama said in remarks recorded by CBS News’s Mark Knoller. “Pretty influential guy. He is a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout the Middle East. Reform, reform, reform. You’re seeing it on Al-Jazeera.”

Re-write that last paragraph thusly:

“Rupert Murdoch came by the Oval Office today and he owns Fox News basically,” Obama said. “Pretty influential guy. He’s a big booster, big promoter of democracy all throughout America. Reform, reform, reform. You’re seeing it all on Fox.”

We feel confident in saying that’s not going to happen anytime soon. The target of the reform rarely endorses the reformer.

Of course, they did: NASA told al Jazeera about its Muslim outreach before it told Congress

Imagine that you’re a congressman or even an exalted United States senator. In your mind, you’re one of the most important people in the world. Now imagine how you’d feel when you find out that al Jazeera TV was told about NASA’s Muslim outreach before you were.

Imagine that you’re a congressman or even an exalted United States senator. In your mind, you’re one of the most important people in the world. Now imagine how you’d feel when you find out that al Jazeera TV was told about NASA’s Muslim outreach before you were.

Uh-oh. The Washington Examiner has the surprising details of the surprised congressmen:

Rep. Pete Olson, the ranking Republican on the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, got a call from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on June 28, the day the White House released its new long-term plan for the space program. “He ran down some of the things from the president’s new space policy, and mentioned outreach to Muslims,” Olson recalls. “That stunned me. I didn’t believe it.”

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the Democrat who chairs the subcommittee (and is also married to astronaut Mark Kelly), got a briefing from Bolden the same day, according to a spokesman.

As it happens, Bolden’s calls to Giffords and Olson came several days after Bolden discussed the Muslim initiative with Al Jazeera. According to a NASA spokesman, Bolden sat down with Al Jazeera’s Imran Garda on June 17, during a stop in Doha, Qatar. Bolden’s Mideast trip, which was timed to mark the first anniversary of President Obama’s June 2009 Muslim outreach speech, was devoted to pursuing “a new beginning of the relationship between the United States and the Muslim world.”

Make no mistake. Bolden’s interview with Al Jazeera interview aired on June 30, after Bolden briefed members of Congress. But it was recorded on June 17, before they were briefed.

Look for Congress to issue a fatwa on Charles Bolden.

Al-Jazeera’s female news anchors walk out over strict dress code

Let’s get to the point quickly. al-Jazeera’s management wanted its female anchors to dress more conservatively. And when they say “more conservatively,” we don’t think they mean “like Ann Coulter.”

Struggling networks like MSNBC should consider the burka. They'd save big bucks in the make-up department.

Let’s get to the point quickly. al-Jazeera’s management wanted its female anchors to dress more conservatively. And when they say “more conservatively,” we don’t think they mean “like Ann Coulter.”

Five female news presenters at the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera satellite television channel have resigned over conflicts with management over dress code and other issues, a journalist there said on Sunday.

“This collective resignation is not motivated just by the growing pressure on the presenters concerning their dress code, which was evoked by the media,” said the journalist, who asked not to be identified.

“The conflicts run much deeper,” the journalist added.

The news presenters who have reportedly quit are Jumana Namur, Lina Zahreddin, Lona al-Shibel, Julnar Mussa and Nofar Afli.

The Al-Hayat daily reported on Sunday that they had resigned in the past few days after petitioning management in January over repeated criticism from a top company official for allegedly not being conservative enough in their dress.

We don’t watch al-Jazeera because it’s not part of the basic package on our cable system. But we do get MSNBC. Same news, different dress code.

Even al Jazeera criticizes Obama’s tepid support for Iranian democracy

You know there’s a problem when al Jazeera runs an opinion piece that criticizes President Obama’s weak-kneed support for Iranian democracy.

You know the world has gone insane when al Jazeera shows more support for democracy than the President of the United States does.
You know the world has gone insane when al Jazeera shows more support for democracy than the President of the United States does.

You know there’s a problem when al Jazeera runs an opinion piece that criticizes President Obama’s weak-kneed support for Iranian democracy.

Here are a few of the Arabic news service’s pithier comments:

Zinger #1: “It took two weeks of intensified government repression against protesters in Iran before Barack Obama, the US president, moved from cautious commentary to describing the crackdown as ‘violent and unjust.’”

Zinger #2: “Obama is acutely aware of the real reason why he cannot be too forceful in supporting the millions of Iranians demanding to have their votes counted. The problem is not with US administrations long past, but with the policies of the current administration.”

Zinger #3: “The substance of Obama’s foreign policies in the Middle East and North Africa remain in many key areas strikingly similar to, and are in some cases more aggressive than, those of George Bush, his predecessor.”

Zinger #4: “Does Obama really not understand that Mubarak’s interest is not in peace, but rather in an unending peace process that ensures his continued relevance and billions of dollars in no-strings-attached American aid?”

Zinger #5: “Ultimately, it is the reality of the Obama administration’s support for a discredited status quo across the region, and not the actions of the Eisenhower administration half a century ago, that makes it impossible for the US to play a forceful role advocating for democracy in Iran at this crucial moment in the history of the Islamic Republic, and ours as well.”

The Emperor has no clothes. But as far as his acolytes are concerned, that just highlights his well-toned pecs.

PBS to carry al Jazeera propaganda news program. Network to be renamed al PBS?

Introducing al PBS\' new correspondent in Afghanistan. Or maybe Pakistan.
Introducing al PBS' new correspondent in Afghanistan. Or maybe Pakistan.

PBS, the national broadcasting network funded with our tax dollars and your tax dollars and the coerced donations of America’s corporations, has plumbed new depths in its anti-American news coverage.

The network’s WorldFocus program now carries reports from Al Jazeera’s English channel, leading some lawmakers and a lot of citizens to object.

“It is a professional institution but it is a militant institution that wants to convey an ideological Jihadi message,” Walid Phares, a terrorism expert for Fox News, said about al Jazeera.

“My concern is that the American people should be pretty darn upset about the fact that their tax dollars are going to fund this,” said North Carolina’s Republican Rep. Sue Myrick said. “I mean, they’re already upset about what their tax dollars are going to fund, and now they’re funding propaganda.

WorldFocus responded with this statement:

“Though many people who have not seen Al Jazeera English think of it as a propaganda machine for Islamic extremist causes, much of what it produces is not ideological. We also believe Al Jazeera English does sometimes offer us and our viewers a unique perspective from various parts of the world where it has access that others don’t.”

In other news, PBS has announced that it will offer a whole new line of al Jazeera logo items during its next fundraiser. Products include authentic-looking dynamite vests for the dashing about town, stylish burkhas for the liberal lady who wants that chic “international” look, and the much requested “Bush Is Hitler” notepads.

Call now. Operators are standing by.

Al-Jazeera’s coverage of dictators is more honest than AP’s

This story provides a perfect demonstration of the corruption of the American media.

What else can it be called when Al-Jazeera’s coverage of tinhorn dictators is more honest than the coverage provided by Associated Press.

Just look at the difference in how the two services each covered the recent…uh…election in North Korea:

The AlJazeera.net story:
Kim ‘re-elected’ in N Korea vote

Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, has been re-elected to the country’s parliament in elections that have been closely watched for hints as to his possible successor.

In an unsurprising result Kim was re-elected by voters in Constituency 333 with 100 per cent support, the official KCNA news agency said on Monday.

The report said voters renewed their “unshakable determination to devotedly safeguard” the North Korean leader.

The Associated Press story:
North Korean leader Kim re-elected to parliament

Kim Jong Il was unanimously re-elected to North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament, state media said Monday, in elections closely watched for signs of a political shift or hints the autocratic leader is grooming a successor.

All eligible voters in Constituency No. 333 cast ballots for Kim, renewing their “unshakable determination to devotedly safeguard” the leader, the official Korean Central News Agency said in first results from Sunday’s poll.

Contrast the two headlines: Al-Jazeera put quotation marks around the word “re-elected” in recognition of the fraudulent nature of the “election.” AP, on the other hand, may as well have been reporting that the British Prime minister had been re-elected.

Contrast the second paragraphs: Al-Jazeera refers to Kim’s unanimous election as “unsurprising” (in parens), another acknowledgement of the fraudulent nature of the “election.” AP simply reports that all eligible voters cast ballots for Kim as if that’s a common occurrence in elections.

Shame on Associated Press. They are so consumed by political correctness that they seem incapable of simply saying, “Kim Jong Il is a petty dictator and this election was a fraud.”

The only thing missing from their story was this line:

“Former President Jimmy Carter traveled to Pyongyang to observe the election and certified that it met the highest international standards for honesty and transparency.”

Al-Jazeera gets US Viewers, American nets go nuts

Ratings for Al-Jazeera’s English network skyrocketed during the Gaza conflict. Since the network’s English-language service has virtually no U.S. presence, viewers had to seek it out on the internet.

This undoubtedly drove execs at American networks into a frenzy.

Imagine this scene as an American network’s news executives gathered around a mahogany conference room table as large as your living room.

“Why did the viewers desert us,” asked one depressed programmer. “We’re just as anti-American as Al-Jazeera.”

“It’s not fair,” whined another. “Our propaganda is just as good as their propaganda.”

“If they keep this up,” said a third, “Obama will have to impose the Fairness Doctrine on Al-Jazeera, too.”
