This is one Associated Press story you won’t see reported on CNN

Small town radio stations, too poor to field their own reporters and writers, are famous for reading the news straight off the pages of their local newspaper. Now the Associated Press is accusing CNN of doing the same sort of thing on a much larger scale.

Breaking news has been replaced by stolen news at CNN

AP has the devious details:

CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton told staff in June that the network was dropping its contract with the Associated Press and would provide its audience with content that is “distinctive, compelling and, I am proud to say, our own.”

But the AP has been closely monitoring CNN’s coverage and claims that the network routinely uses the wire service’s reporting, according to internal memos obtained by The Upshot. CNN, the memo states, “continues to rely heavily, and apparently systematically, on AP breaking news, exclusive enterprise and in-depth reporting.”

… AP spokesman Paul Colford, while not commenting on the memos, summed up the news organization’s problem with the network’s coverage. “CNN continues to make extensive use of AP’s original reporting, even though they no longer pay us for it,” Colford said. “We are monitoring it very closely, and are considering our options.”

CNN. The most trusted name in news. Even if it’s someone else’s news.

The liberal media could learn a thing or two from Martin Luther King

The Associated Press reported Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor rally on August 28, 2010 was a predominantly white crowd. Any word on the content of their character?

martin luther king
Which rally do you think Martin Luther King would have supported?

Here’s what Martin Luther King said on August 28, 1963:

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

And here’s how the Associated Press reported Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor rally on August 28, 2010:

“Conservative commentator Glenn Beck and tea party champion Sarah Palin appealed Saturday to a vast, predominantly white crowd on the National Mall to help restore traditional American values and honor Martin Luther King’s message.”

A vast, predominantly white crowd? Any word on the content of their character?

Associated Press issues editorial edict: Don’t call it the “Ground Zero Mosque” anymore

The Associated Press is kind of like the old major league baseball umpire who said, “I calls ‘em like I sees ‘em.” The name “Ground Zero mosque” might be good enough for the American public, but it’s not good enough for AP.

The Associated Press is kind of like the old major league baseball umpire who said, “I calls ‘em like I sees ‘em.” The name “Ground Zero mosque” might be good enough for the American public, but it’s not good enough for AP.

Tom Kent, the Associated Press’ Deputy Managing Editor for Standards and Production, laid down the law about what to call what everyone else calls the Ground Zero mosque. Or at least what not to call it.

ground zero mosque associated press
Let's not call it the Ground Zero mosque because it's sooooo far away from Ground Zero

Aug. 19, 2010

Colleagues,

Here is some guidance on covering the NYC mosque story, with assists from Chad Roedemeier in the NYC bureau and Terry Hunt in Washington:

1. We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque” or “mosque at ground zero” on all platforms. (We’ve very rarely used this wording, except in slugs, though we sometimes see other news sources using the term.) The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area. We should continue to say it’s “near” ground zero, or two blocks away.

WE WILL CHANGE OUR SLUG ON THIS STORY LATER TODAY from “BC-Ground Zero Mosque” to “BC-NYC Mosque.”

In short headlines, some ways to refer to the project include:
• mosque 2 blocks from WTC site

• Muslim (or Islamic) center near WTC site

• mosque near ground zero

• mosque near WTC site

We can refer to the project as a mosque, or as a proposed Islamic center that includes a mosque.

Call it what you want, Tom, but the American people are going to call it the Ground Zero mosque.

AP grapples with Obama’s slide from omnipotence to impotence

The media’s job is to figure out how to get more Democrats elected. That’s the way the Associated Press seems to see it and a recent hand-wringing editorial from AP shows liberal news sources have been betrayed by the Obama administration.

Even President Obama should be able to read the writing on the teleprompter

The media’s job is to figure out how to get more Democrats elected.

That’s the way the Associated Press seems to see it and a recent hand-wringing editorial from AP shows liberal news sources have been betrayed by the Obama administration.

Never in the post-racial, post-Viagra political landscape has a media action figure fallen so sharply and so quickly. AP now fears that Obama’s magic has worn off.

The list of White House failures is growing: It hasn’t galvanized the legions of 2008 Obama backers in three major statewide losses. It hasn’t prevented primary challenges for at least two vulnerable Senate Democrats even though Obama endorsed them. And it hasn’t recruited strong candidates for Senate seats once held by Vice President Joe Biden and the president himself.

AP can’t blame themselves. They and other journalists created the biggest, coolest honeymoon that a president has ever had. In their rush to get Obama elected, they forgot to ask the tough questions, like how Obama would deliver on his campaign promises. They swept concerns under the rug and lied when that didn’t work.

When high expectations and Obama’s own low qualifications smashed head long into political reality, the media has come to the conclusion that they created a monster that even they can not keep propped up.

And their agenda hangs in the balance.

Associated Press hollers “dog pile” and jumps on President Obama

In the last few weeks an avalanches of criticism of President Obama has come from formerly reliable leftwing media. Hints of doubt have come from MSNBC host Chris Matthews and New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd. And now even AP has jumped on top of the dog pile.

President Barack Obama, the man at the bottom of the dog pile

It has begun. In the last few weeks an avalanches of criticism of President Obama has come from formerly reliable leftwing media. Hints of doubt have come from MSNBC host Chris Matthews and New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd. And now even AP has jumped on top of the dog pile.

The Obama administration claim that “the system worked” after a failed aircraft bombing wasn’t quite as jolting as President George W. Bush’s “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job” when New Orleans was sinking under deadly Hurricane Katrina. But both raised disturbing questions about presidential response in a time of crisis…

Amid those questions, administration officials’ repeated statements Sunday that “the system worked” were jarring. They made it sound like the administration doesn’t get it, like it is paying too much attention to political fallout and too little to public fears…

For Obama, still short of one year in office, his narrative, critical or otherwise, isn’t set yet.

Nonetheless, rumblings keep resurfacing about emotional distance, even coldness. Whether it’s Wall Street bonuses or terrorist near-disaster, people wonder whether he feels as they do or ever acts out of passion.

Far as we can tell, this guy has only two passions – basketball and the socialization of the American economy. And there’s very little difference between the two.

In the former, he likes to dunk on old, fat white guys. In the latter, he likes to dump on old, fat white guys.

Associated Press says MSNBC didn’t act like a news network during airline bombing incident. They’re just noticing?

Reality slapped the Associated Press up the side of the head this week. They finally noticed that MSNBC isn’t really much of a news network.

Next thing you know, the Associated Press will notice that Keith Olbermann isn't really a newsman.

Reality slapped the Associated Press up the side of the head this week. They finally noticed that MSNBC isn’t really much of a news network.

AP explains what lead them to this overdue conclusion:

MSNBC spent considerable time Monday reporting on the aftermath of an attempted Christmas Day attack on a Detroit-bound airliner, but its executives didn’t want to talk about why the story received little attention as it was breaking.

Competitors CNN and Fox News Channel gave much more extensive attention to the story on Christmas night as MSNBC stuck with taped programs on a murder mystery and environmental issues, along with an “undercover” report on the teenage sex trade.

MSNBC has been criticized in the past for failing to respond quickly to breaking news during off-hours, a choice that may complicate its efforts to be seen as a go-to news source. The network is revamping its daytime schedule to be more news-oriented than personality-driven, since the latter approach has proven to be a ratings failure.

On Christmas, an anchor did live cut-ins about once an hour to pass on news of the attempted terrorism, said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman.
Fox mixed live coverage of the story Friday night with a taped year-end retrospective show with Bill O’Reilly. CNN devoted virtually all of its prime-time hours to the incident, its coverage anchored by Ali Velshi.

Neither Gaines nor Phil Griffin, MSNBC’s top executive, would discuss the judgment call on Monday.

MSNBC’s choice was noted by Rachel Sklar, a blogger for the Mediaite Web site: “If you’re going to call yourself a news network, then cover the news,” she wrote.

As a result of this actual reporting, Keith Olbermann is expected to name Associated Press the World’s Worst Wire Service of the Day.

Both of MSNBC’s remaining viewers will think it’s the funniest damn thing they’ve ever seen.

Associated Press screws up story of British government ending “i” before “e” rule

The British government has issued new guidelines that put an end to the traditional “i” before “e” spelling rule. They say there are just too many exceptions.

No longer exceptional
No longer exceptional: beige, codeine, conscience, deify, deity, deign,
dreidel, eider, eight, either, feign, feint, feisty,
foreign, forfeit, freight, heifer, heigh-ho, height, heinous, heir, heist,
 neigh, neighbor, neither, peignoir, prescient,
rein, science, seine, seismic, seize, sheik,
society, sovereign, surfeit, veil, vein, weight,
 weir, weird

The British government has issued new guidelines that put an end to the traditional “i” before “e” spelling rule. They say there are just too many exceptions.

Here’s how the Associated Press reported the story (please take special note of the correction AP added at the end of the story):

The “Support For Spelling” document, which is being sent to thousands of primary schools, says the rule “is not worth teaching” because it doesn’t account for words like ‘sufficient,’ ‘veil’ and ‘their.’

Jack Bovill of the Spelling Society, which advocates simplified spelling, said Saturday he agreed with the decision.

But supporters say the ditty has value because it is one of the few language rules that most people remember.

(This version CORRECTS spelling of Bovill, sted Bovell, in graf 4.)

That’s right, the first version of the AP story spelled the spokesman’s name “Bovell,” but the corrected version spelled it “Bovill,” in effect validating the entire story by putting “e” before “i.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

Tim Blair, Sydney Daily Herald, or a reasonable approximation thereof.

Tim Blair, the opinion editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph, is a man who recognizes hypocrisy when he sees it.

In fact, he does a better job covering the hypocrisy of American journalism than most American journalists do. Blair’s blog featured this item recently:

In the tradition of the mother of the boyfriend of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s daughter:

A half sister of Gov. Sarah Palin’s husband is accused of breaking into the same home two times with the intention of stealing money.

Both pieces from Associated Press, specialists in association.

How many degrees of separation does it take before Associated Press thinks a story isn’t newsworthy? Could someone please look that up in the AP Style Guide.

Associated Press thinks Michael Moore’s opinion is 2.1 times more important than Ted Nugent’s

ted_nugent1 The Associated Press makes it pretty clear where they come down politically. In fact, they couldn’t disguise it if they tried.

Take Saturday’s AP story on Detroit, for example. They asked three homegrown Detroit celebrities – Michael Moore, Ted Nugent, and Mary Wilson – about the city’s troubles.

They lead off with liberal fantasy moviemaker Moore, giving him seven paragraphs and 204 words. Yet conservative Motor City Madman Nugent merits only two paragraphs and 96 words (previous article). Even politically unannounced former Supreme Wilson tops that with four paragraphs and 104 words. The story even allowed Moore a chance to promote his new “documentary,” but mentioned no current or future projects from Nugent nor Wilson.

We’d like to propose a debate between the Moore and Nugent. A ten round debate. Mary Wilson can be the ring girl. Sell tickets. Bingo. Detroit’s financial problems are solved.

Mortgage your house. Put the money on Nugent.

We’re geniuses.

Al-Jazeera’s coverage of dictators is more honest than AP’s

This story provides a perfect demonstration of the corruption of the American media.

What else can it be called when Al-Jazeera’s coverage of tinhorn dictators is more honest than the coverage provided by Associated Press.

Just look at the difference in how the two services each covered the recent…uh…election in North Korea:

The AlJazeera.net story:
Kim ‘re-elected’ in N Korea vote

Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, has been re-elected to the country’s parliament in elections that have been closely watched for hints as to his possible successor.

In an unsurprising result Kim was re-elected by voters in Constituency 333 with 100 per cent support, the official KCNA news agency said on Monday.

The report said voters renewed their “unshakable determination to devotedly safeguard” the North Korean leader.

The Associated Press story:
North Korean leader Kim re-elected to parliament

Kim Jong Il was unanimously re-elected to North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament, state media said Monday, in elections closely watched for signs of a political shift or hints the autocratic leader is grooming a successor.

All eligible voters in Constituency No. 333 cast ballots for Kim, renewing their “unshakable determination to devotedly safeguard” the leader, the official Korean Central News Agency said in first results from Sunday’s poll.

Contrast the two headlines: Al-Jazeera put quotation marks around the word “re-elected” in recognition of the fraudulent nature of the “election.” AP, on the other hand, may as well have been reporting that the British Prime minister had been re-elected.

Contrast the second paragraphs: Al-Jazeera refers to Kim’s unanimous election as “unsurprising” (in parens), another acknowledgement of the fraudulent nature of the “election.” AP simply reports that all eligible voters cast ballots for Kim as if that’s a common occurrence in elections.

Shame on Associated Press. They are so consumed by political correctness that they seem incapable of simply saying, “Kim Jong Il is a petty dictator and this election was a fraud.”

The only thing missing from their story was this line:

“Former President Jimmy Carter traveled to Pyongyang to observe the election and certified that it met the highest international standards for honesty and transparency.”

AP dispenses healthy, but unexpected dose of reality: Obama plan faltering

associated press logoA just-released Associated Press analysis is a dramatic departure from the liberal claptrap we’ve come to expect from the wire service.

“President Barack Obama offered his domestic-policy proposals as a ‘break from a troubled past.’ But the economic outlook now is more troubled than it was even in January, despite Obama’s bold rhetoric and commitment of more trillions of dollars.”

“And while his personal popularity remains high, some economists and lawmakers are beginning to question whether Obama’s agenda of increased government activism is helping, or hurting, by sowing uncertainty among businesses, investors and consumers that could prolong the recession.”

“Although the administration likes to say it “inherited” the recession and trillion-dollar deficits, the economic wreckage has worsened on Obama’s still-young watch.”

“Every day, the economy is becoming more and more an Obama economy.”

Read the entire analysis. It’s actually honest enough to quote doubting Democrats who are buying neither Obama’s line of reasoning nor line of bull.

AP sues over famous Obama poster. Pravda may sue over famous Lenin poster.

lenin posterThe Associated Press is suing Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the famous red, white and blue Obama poster.

AP says it owns the copyright, and has demanded credit and cold, hard cash. Fairey disagrees although he has admitted the poster is based on an AP photograph taken at the National Press Club in Washington.

In related news, the Russian news agency Pravda may sue IHateTheMedia.com, the popular website that created the famous red, white and blue Lenin photo.

Pravda says it owns the copyright, and has demanded credit and a bottle of vodka. IHateTheMedia.com disagrees although they have admitted the poster is based on a Pravda photograph taken at the Kremlin in Moscow.

Obama’s illegal alient aunt moves to Cleveland

cleveland signThe incredibly partisan Associated Press has finally done something right. Late, but right.

They used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain federal documents that
prove the Bush administration made it impossible for Immigration officials
to arrest Obama¹s illegal alien aunt before the election

Zeituni Onyango, Obama’s late father’s half-sister was living in public housing in Boston at the time. She is now believed to be living in Cleveland.

We say, “Give the woman a break.” Isn’t living in Cleveland punishment enough?
