Car designed to stop global warming has an overheating problem

The car touted as the cure for global warming has a defective coolant pump. You cannot make this stuff up. And even if you could, why bother? Just wait a day or two and another one of these wacky stories is sure to pop up.

Nothing’s going right for the global warming scammers these days. Sadly, we must report that Toyota’s Prius has an overheating problem.

Irony of all ironies: The Toyota Prius has an overheating problem

ABC Australia has the seemingly contradictory details:

Japan’s Toyota Motor has offered to fix around 650,000 Prius models worldwide to repair a defective engine coolant pump, in a move it said was not a recall …

The world’s largest automaker said it would “voluntarily” replace a pump controlling the temperature of the hybrid engine system, which may cause overheating if it does not work properly.

Got that? The car touted as the cure for global warming has a defective coolant pump.

You cannot make this stuff up. And even if you could, why bother? Just wait a day or two and another one of these wacky stories is sure to pop up.

Prius driver goes insane, wastes gasoline

Timothy Hird is about to become a legend within the Royal Society of Arrogant Prius Owners. Despite his imminent fame, it’s a tragic tale and something we wouldn’t wish on the most liberal of liberals.

Timothy Hird is about to become a legend within the Royal Society of Arrogant Prius Owners. Despite his imminent fame, it’s a tragic tale and something we wouldn’t wish on the most liberal of liberals.

Jalopnik.com has the details:

Timothy Hird of Winder, Georgia was so sick of people pushing around hybrid drivers he attempted to race a non-hybrid Honda Civic to “prove how fast his Prius could go.” The stunt landed the beleaguered Prius owner in jail.

It happened last week near Braselton, Georiga when the Prius driver was leaving a Publix supermarket. According to the police report, the driver of the Civic pulled out in front of Hird. This was the last straw for the Prius driver. He sped up to meet the Civic and yelled “Watch this!” at the Civic’s female passenger and started harassing them by tapping on the brakes and blocking their car. Eventually, the Civic driver tried to pass the hybrid and nearly wiped out into a police car.

Both drivers were promptly arrested and charged with reckless driving, though the Prius driver probably would have been happier with a speeding ticket.

The real drama in this situation will occur at next month’s meeting of the Royal Society of Arrogant Prius Owners. Will they shun Hird for wasting our precious oil resources? Or salute him for standing up for the honor of their much-maligned hybrids?

The world awaits the decision.

Saturday Night Live takes the Prius out for a spin

As conservatives, we are, of course, cold-hearted and uncaring by definition. Liberal definition, that is.

That being said, there’s a sick part of us that hopes every eco-bonehead who drives a Prius discovers that uncontrollable acceleration is real.

As conservatives, we are, of course, cold-hearted and uncaring by definition. Liberal definition, that is.

That being said, there’s a sick part of us that hopes every eco-bonehead who drives a Prius discovers that uncontrollable acceleration is real.

Think of it as Darwin in action.

Oh, wait, we’re conservatives and don’t believe any of that Darwin stuff. We forgot.

Surprise, surprise: Driver of runaway Prius also had runaway debts

Turns out James Sikes, the driver of San Diego’s so-called runaway Prius, hasn’t been making payments on the Prius, filed for bankruptcy in 2008, has $700,000 in debt, has had several previous vehicles “stolen,” and to top it all off, reportedly operates a sexually-oriented website.

We don’t know if the Prius has trouble stopping or not, but we do know that nothing will stop the cockroaches from crawling out of the woodwork.

Jalopnik.com has the juicy details:

We received an email earlier today from an anonymous tipster who claims James (Jim) Sikes, the driver of the runaway Toyota Prius, was in financial trouble and even behind by five months on his payments for the Prius. If that’s true, it’s potential motivation for wanting to find an out — any out — on paying for the vehicle.

We did some public records searches (thanks to the help of Gawker’s John Cook) and found Sikes and his wife Patty found themselves, like many in the California real estate business, on the bursting side of the real estate bubble last year. The two declared bankruptcy in June of 2008 and have a combined liability of over $700,000 dollars in debt.

Among the list of creditors holding secured claims is none other than Toyota Financial Services for a lease on a 2008 Toyota Prius with 7,200 miles on the odometer. Total value of the lease at the time of bankruptcy was $20,494.

So, with almost three-quarter million dollars in debt there’s obviously the potential for financial motivation here. But, for his part, when we questioned Mr. Sikes over email earlier today, he denied being behind on his Prius payments.

Mr. Sikes also has not shied away from cameras appearing on CNN and numerous other television programs. In each, he’s stated numerous times he’s not going to sue and isn’t looking for any financial remuneration from Toyota other than a new vehicle.

We’ve asked the law firm representing him to furnish us with an up-to-date copy of his Toyota statement and we’ll post that as soon as we receive it — to either debunk this myth or add fuel to any fire.

But regardless of what happens with the Sikes case, the bigger issue for Toyota will be every cash-strapped ‘yota-owner looking for an easy out on their loans and leases potentially thinking about doing just this with their car. That’s a lot of potential carnage to wade through.

To inject a completely personal note, IHateTheMedia.com’s editor drove an Audi 25 years ago when they were supposedly prone to uncontrollable sudden acceleration. Today he drives a Toyota that is, of course, supposedly prone to uncontrollable sudden acceleration.

Weird.

Andy Richter takes a shot at smug Prius owners

This is a great commercial. Actually, we don’t know if it’s a real commercial or just something Richter put together to express his opinion of pompous Prius drivers.

But first a story: We have a very good friend who lives in a ritzy neighborhood in Santa Monica, California, not far from Laurie David.

You remember Laurie David. Former wife of Seinfeld producer Larry David. Was touring the country with Sheryl Crow when the singer urged everyone to use just one square of toilet paper. That Laurie David.

We were walking down the street with our friend one day when we came upon another neighbor who was unloading groceries from her SUV. She was pissed.

“Laurie David just pulled up,” the neighbor said, “and yelled at me for driving an SUV instead of a Prius. What a bitch.”

Now that we’ve set the scene, watch the Andy Richter commercial. Be prepared to laugh.

Al Gore flunks physics at UC Berkeley

al goreAccording to the latest issue of Forbes, Professor Richard Muller tools around uber liberal Berkeley in a Toyota Pirus.

Nothing out of place here, right? Wrong.

“It doesn’t save me money,” he explains. “It doesn’t help slow global warming. I just love the technology.” Muller, named a MacArthur genius in 1982, goes even further. He scoffs at the greens’ favorite energy theories and says people like Al Gore and Thomas Friedman are exaggerators of global warming, pure and simple.

Here at IHateTheMedia.com we wonder just what former future President Gore must think when he hears such blasphemy coming from an august professor.

The answer, obviously, is that Gore doesn’t think much (that sentence has two meanings and both of them are true).

Gore lives in a world of massive denial. To him, Professor Muller is just a dumb blond, Bill Clinton really didn’t have sex with that woman, and when Credence Clearwater sings ”Fortunate Son” the lyrics really say “I am a senator’s son.”

Jodie Foster busted for hybrid hypocrisy

prius_race_car

Jodie Foster was pulled over in Beverly Hills last week for speeding. Police said the movie star’s politically-correct Prius was clocked doing 54 in a 35 mile per hour zone.

To make it even better, the whole thing was caught on tape by a crew of “Speeders,” a truTV reality show.

According to the New York Post, “Foster refused to sign a waiver to appear on the show, so the camera crew ceased filming and returned to the police car. But she grew quite agitated and angry, and kept insisting to the police officers that the radar gun must have made a mistake. She maintained to the officers that she was only going 30 mph at the time they pulled her over, and she kept interrupting and complaining that the process was taking too long…Despite her numerous requests otherwise, the cops still issued her a citation.”

In a similar story, Al Gore’s son was arrested in July, 2007 for doing 100 mph in his Prius on the San Diego Freeway.

We have the same reaction to both stories: Who’d have believed a Prius could actually exceed the speed limit?
