The case was seen by some as a test of free speech in a country which has a long tradition of tolerance and blunt talk, but where opposition to immigration, particularly from Muslim or predominantly Muslim countries, is on the rise.

Instantly recognizable by his mane of dyed blond hair, Wilders, 47, is one of the most outspoken critics of Islam and immigration in the Netherlands.

His Freedom Party is now the third-largest in parliament, a measure of support for its anti-immigrant stance, and is the minority government’s chief ally. But many of Wilders’ comments — such as likening Islam to Nazism — are socially divisive.

Really nice impartial work, Reuters. You didn’t even attempt to disguise your editorializing by saying, “Some people say his comments are socially divisive.” You went straight to they are socially divisive.

Unfortunately, the Wilders case isn’t an isolated incident. Australian newspaper columnist, blogger and TV star Andrew Bolt  is currently being tried under his nation’s Racial Discrimination Act.

His offense? Suggesting in a series of columns that some light or white-skinned Aussies who identify themselves as aboriginal may have motives that are less than pure. The overly-sensitive “aboriginal” plaintiffs say they were offended, insulted, humiliated or intimidated by Bolt’s articles.

One day at a time. Wilders today, Bolt tomorrow.

We’re embarrassed to admit that IHateTheMedia.com has been ripped off by Charles Davis, an Associate Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism. We’d feel a lot better about it if we’d been ripped off by a full professor, but alas, that was not meant to be. We were ripped off by a mere Associate Professor.

Of course, the “hate” he’s referring to is that displayed by you angry Nazis who oppose ObamaCare:

The shrill incivility framing what passes for discourse on health care reform seems to have long ago crossed over into territory unrecognized by most rational citizens of the republic.

In the age of instant cable punditry, e-mail Astroturf campaigns left and right and made-to-order outrage, it’s easy to sigh, close the old browser and get back to the business of preseason football, but scratch a bit harder at the random news offered as so many one-off stories about unhinged denizens from the “town hall” meetings (has ever an honored democratic practice been so tarnished?), and a clear trend emerges.

Hate, shuffled off stage in the post-racial haze of the election of the nation’s first black president, is back with a vengeance. Hate, if it ever truly threatened to leave the political stage, is most definitely back, larger and nastier than ever.

As a near-absolutist First Amendment advocate, my prescription for hate speech is always more speech: Give the bigot a microphone as big as the hatred, I say, and watch as the marketplace of ideas works its magic.

Perhaps that’s why I worry, as I watch an emboldened mob grow more irresponsible with each passing day, that the mainstream media fails to give hate the coverage it deserves today.

My proposition is simple: Major news organizations need to cover hate the way they once did — as a standalone beat.

We hate that idea. We hate Associate Professor Davis. We hate the fact that he’s tenured. We hate his tie. We hate his pants. We hate his university. We hate its football team. We hate its cheerleaders. We hate its fraternities. We hate its lousy weather.

Back off, Associate Professor Davis. Hate is our turf.

The U.K. today announced the names if sixteen people banned from entering the the country. These are people that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said these are the sorts of nasty people that “Britain was not prepared to tolerate.” Among those named is America’s third most popular political radio talk show host Michael Savage, a personal favorite of the Administrator here (and boy is he pissed).

Isn’t Britain where Imams stand in the streets shouting Death to Jews?

“The War on Terror” now hate speech

Words matter according to President Obama. Especially when they might offend the sensitive terrorists of the world.

“Words matter in this situation,” Obama told Anderson Cooper, “because one of the ways we’re going to win this struggle is through the battle of hearts and minds.”

Obama thinks we can cozy up to moderate Muslims if we choose our words carefully. So “The War on Terror” is out. Instead, Obama uses inoffensive but meaningless platitudes like “the enduring struggle against terrorism and extremism.”

Obviously, with all the tax cheats running rampant in his administration, Obama hasn’t had time to work up a catchy new phrase to replace “The War on Terror.” So we’re here to help. How about:

“The Obama Thrill-O-Rama”
 or
“The Dynamite Vest Dance Recital.”
 or
“57 Virgin Tour 2009”
