Latest polls show that Americans no longer like – nor trust – their government.
The job approval rating for Congress, for instance, hovers down around the 20 percent level.
Trust in the government, following a rash of takeovers and bailouts, is also at new lows.
So what does the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue do when it creates its “public relations” campaign to convince people to pay their taxes in this era of increasing distrust?
They put together creepy, malevolent commercials that underscore every Orwellian stereotype you can imagine about state abuse of power. First there’s the satellite imagery and targeting. Then a non-human voice chimes in with threats of “we know where you live.”
If they just had the tag line, “Paying your taxes will set you free,” they’d have officially moved from public service announcement to fascist propaganda.
There’s always a chance they’re working on that now.
