Sonia Sotomayor versus Paula Abdul: The remarkable tale of two judges

We have two remarkably talented American women, Sonia Sotomayor and Paula Abdul, are simultaneously being considered for important positions as judges.

Sonia Sotomayor Paula Abdul

We find ourselves at the point in American history where two remarkably talented American women are simultaneously being considered for important positions as judges.

We speak, of course, of Sonia Sotomayor and Paula Abdul.

Unbeknownst to most Americans, the similarities between these two women are amazing. Far more amazing than those Lincoln-Kennedy comparisons that make the rounds every few years. For example:

  • Their first names both contain five letters.
  • They were both born in June (Paula on June 19, Sonia on June 25).
  • Both are the children of immigrants. Paula’s father was Syrian and her mother was Canadian. Sonia’s parents were Puerto Rican.
  • Paula will soon find out if she will continue judging American Idol, the top-rated TV program in the United States. Sonia will soon find out if she will sit on the top court in the United States.
  • Paula always admired the Supremes, while Sonia always admired the Supreme Court.
  • Paula choreographed the Laker Girls and Sonia’s appearance before the Senate Judicial Committee was completely choreographed.
  • Both pursued their careers after being inspired by Hollywood. Paula’s hero was Gene Kelly, while Sonia’s hero was Hamilton Burger.
  • Paula is known for dancing while American Idol contestants perform, while Sonia is known for dancing around the Constitution.
  • Paula is known for making irrational statements while announcing her decisions, while Sonia is known for irrational statements in her written decisions.
  • Paula is often overruled by Randy and Simon, while Sonia is often overruled by the Supreme Court.
  • Paula has been accused of screwing one of the contestants she was expect to judge, while Sonia has been accused of screwing over those she was expected to judge.
  • Paula was a cheerleader in high school, while Sonia has been a cheerleader for a radical Puerto Rican group.
  • Paula had been forgotten by the American public until she began appearing on the TV show American Idol, while Sonia was unknown by the American people until she appeared on television during her Senate confirmation hearings.
  • Paula expects a raise to $20 million for being an American Idol judge, while Sonia expects a raise to $208,100 for sitting on the Supreme Court.

What are the odds?

Sotomayor’s “inspiration” consistently prosecuted innocent people

Sonia Sotomayor said she had been inspired to become a prosecutor by Hamilton Burger, the fictional District Attorney character in the old Perry Mason TV show. Burger was consistently wrong, gleefully prosecuting innocent people in 206 of those programs.

There was a very strange moment in Sonia Sotomayor’s Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court nominee said she had been inspired to become a prosecutor by Hamilton Burger, the fictional District Attorney character in the old Perry Mason TV show.

Sotomayor told Democrat Senator Amy Klobucher of Minnesota that she first knew she wanted to be a prosecutor while watching the TV show “Perry Mason” as a child.

She recalled that at the end of one case, after another of Mason’s clients had been proven innocent of Burger’s trumped-up charges, “Perry said to the prosecutor, ‘It must cause you some pain having expended all that effort and to have the charges dismissed.’

“And the prosecutor looked up and said, ‘No, my job as a prosecutor is to do justice, and justice is served when a guilty man is convicted and an innocent man is not.’ And I thought to myself, that’s quite amazing, to be able to serve that role.”

“My point,” she added, “is that it is such a wonderful part of being a prosecutor…That TV character said something that motivated my choices in life.”

In the words of Hamilton Burger, “We object.”

The Hamilton Burger character appeared in 207 episodes of the old Perry Mason TV show. He was consistently wrong, gleefully prosecuting innocent people in 206 of those programs. In the 207th episode, “The Case of the Deadly Verdict” Mason was eventually able to prove that his client has been wrong convicted and the worked tirelessly to have the decision overturned.

We would have been far more impressed if she said she had been inspired by the Perry Mason character – the rich, successful attorney who frequently worked without payment to see that justice was done. Instead, Sotomayor was inspired by the character who enthusiastically prosecuted innocent people week after week for ten years.

But it certainly helps explain why the Supreme Court has overturned so many of Sotomayor’s decisions.

Let’s just call it “The Case of the Leftist Latina.”

Harry Reid is completely ignorant, wants to remain completely ignorant, and is remarkably proud of his complete ignorance

Senate Democrat leader Harry Reid put on a virtuoso performance yesterday when asked about Sonia Sotomayor’s academic and professional qualifications to be on the Supreme Court.

“Everyone in America, I want them to understand that we have the whole package here,” Reid said. “If that wasn’t enough, her background is very significant — we could not have anyone better qualified.”

“I understand that during her career, she’s written hundreds and hundreds of opinions,” he continued. “I haven’t read a single one of them, and if I’m fortunate before we end this, I won’t have to read one of them.”

If the rest of us are fortunate, the voters of Nevada will send this guy off to represent Sun City in the next election.

Conservative ex-congressman Tom Tancredo tells CNN Sotomayor a member of “Latino KKK”

Appearing on CNN, former Congressman Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican, attacked Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor for saying wise Latinas make better decisions than white men.

Horrified by Sotomayor’s membership in an “immigrants’ rights group” called La Raza (Translation: “The Race”), Tancredo called it “a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses.”

Rick Sanchez, the CNN host who’s never met a left wing extremist he doesn’t love, was horrified by Tancredo’s assertion.

We were horrified when we realized we were watching CNN.

Obama says Sotomayor wants a do-over on her “wise Latina” comment

She said it then and meant it then, but he said she wouldn't say it now and wouldn't mean it now. No, seriously.

“President Barack Obama on Friday personally sought to deflect criticism of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor…‘I’m sure she would have restated it,’ Obama flatly told NBC News, without indicating how he knew that.”

While we’re at it, Joe Biden wants to restate a bunch of stuff he said, too.
