Which came first, the chicken or the clean air in Madrid?

Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the mayor of Madrid, boasted of big reductions in air pollution since he had taken office in 2003 — unfortunately it was all an illusion.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned in two years of doing whatever the hell it is we do here at IHateTheMedia.com, it’s that things are not always what they appear to be. Especially when it comes to environmental news.

Good news! Madrid's air has never been cleaner!

The Financial Times reports from Spain:

When Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the mayor of Madrid, boasted of big reductions in air pollution since he had taken office in 2003, it seemed a moment for the city’s residents to celebrate an environmental breakthrough.

“Today we have better air quality in Madrid than ever before,” Mr Ruiz-Gallardón proclaimed.

Fabulous! That’s great news! Couldn’t be better! But it could be a bit, shall we say, misleading.

Unfortunately for him and for the 3.3m inhabitants of the Spanish capital, investigators concluded the improvements in air quality were an illusion.

The state prosecutor’s office found that in 2009 the Madrid municipality had quietly moved nearly half its pollution sensors from traffic-clogged streets in the city centre to parks and gardens.

This is, unfortunately, the way it is with environmental reporting.

One day we hear that a graph of the world’s average temperature has never been higher. The next day we learn that a huge number of weather stations in frozen Russia have been decommissioned and scientists say … well … ahem … perhaps so, but that surely has nothing to do with our funding … uhhhh … we mean … our results.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, “There are lies, damn lies and people getting federal grants.”

Suzy Amis Cameron developed the “RED CARPET GREEN DRESS” contest to stimulate sustainable design [and] global green education …

As a model, actress, environmental champion, educational activist, wife of Academy Award winner, James Cameron, and the mother of five children, Suzy’s unique life experience formed the creation of this contest with a deep sense of purpose.

Five children? Five resource-depleting, air-polluting, CO2-spewing, global warming-causing children?

The woman’s uterus is single-handedly destroying the planet (We think we just qualified for Mixed Metaphor of the Year).

Dedicated environmentalist Robert Redford is an even more dedicated hypocrite

There’s a very good reason that dedicated environmentalist Robert Redford opposes a proposed eco-village near his Napa, California vineyard: He cares a lot more about having green in his wallet.

There’s a very good reason that dedicated environmentalist Robert Redford opposes a proposed eco-village near his Napa, California vineyard: He cares a lot more about having green in his wallet than he cares about having green in his world.

NotEvilJustWrong.com has the details:

Redford is one of the main opponents of a plan by the Pacific Union College to build an eco-village in Angwin, California. The college says it needs the funds because of a dire financial situation. The village is close to Redford’s vineyard in the Napa Valley. However whilst publicly opposing this development “to preserve the rural heritage” Redford has been quietly selling development lots in the Sundance Preserve for $2 million. These lots are intended for vacation homes close to Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort.

The double standard is revealed in a short film Robert Redford Hypocrite which has just been released.

Film director Ann McElhinney said the film is not criticising Redford for selling his property.

“It is great that in a recession Mr Redford can find so many buyers. I am delighted that those houses will be built, creating jobs and vitality in a remote area but it is shocking that Mr Redford would deny others similar opportunities to make a profit and create jobs.”

The film’s co-director Phelim McAleer said the film was highlighting the double standards of so many celebrities and environmentalists. “This is just another example of environmental elites telling the rest of us how and where we must live and what we are not allowed to do, but thinking that those rules don’t apply to themselves. Robert Redford has shown himself to be a hypocrite – plain and simple,” said McAleer.

If McAleer wants to do series of films about green hypocrites, he’ll end up with more sequels and prequels than Star Wars.

Good news: Genghis Khan hated people, but he loved him some environment

Here we thought Genghis Khan was a very bad man who raped and pillaged and cut of limbs and blew up bodies. But now all is forgiven because the it turns out ol’ Genghis was actually an environmentalist who saved the planet.

We’re confused and we don’t mind admitting it. Here we thought Genghis Khan was a very bad man who raped and pillaged and cut of limbs and blew up bodies. We thought he was the most evil man in history. For god’s sake, man, that’s why John Kerry compared U.S. troops in Vietnam to the Mongol madman, isn’t it?

But now all is forgiven because the it turns out ol’ Genghis was actually an environmentalist who saved the planet.

genghis
The Mongolian mad man was history's first mass murdering environmentalist

Mother Nature Network explains the new, kinder, gentler Genghis:

Genghis Khan’s Mongol invasion in the 13th and 14th centuries was so vast that it may have been the first instance in history of a single culture causing man-made climate change, according to new research out of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology, reports Mongabay.com.

Unlike modern day climate change, however, the Mongol invasion actually cooled the planet, effectively scrubbing around 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere.

So how exactly did Genghis Khan, one of history’s cruelest conquerors, earn such a glowing environmental report card? The reality may be a bit difficult for today’s environmentalists to stomach, but Khan did it the same way he built his empire — with a high body count.

Over the course of the century and a half run of the Mongol Empire, about 22 percent of the world’s total land area had been conquered and an estimated 40 million people were slaughtered by the horse-driven, bow-wielding hordes. Depopulation over such a large swathe of land meant that countless numbers of cultivated fields eventually returned to forests.

In other words, one effect of Genghis Khan’s unrelenting invasion was widespread reforestation, and the re-growth of those forests meant that more carbon could be absorbed from the atmosphere.

Based on this theory, Hitler was just an environmentalist. Stalin, too. And that Mao, he was a damn saint.

Looks like John Wayne was right. Genghis Khan was a lover, not a fighter.

2,388-page, 14-pound environmental impact report mandates stricter dog leash laws in San Francisco

dogs-on-beach
The newest class of criminals in San Francisco

Not if you live in San Francisco, that is. The eco-wackos have studied these issues in great detail and set out a whole new list of restrictions.

The San Francisco Examiner details the new doggie no-noes:

The federal government proposes to drastically reduce where dogs can roam off leash in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and limit the number of animals that professionals can walk at one time to as few as three.

In The City, for instance, people who want to let their dogs roam freely at Fort Funston would be limited to a stretch of shoreline and a section by the parking lot. And off-leash enjoyment would be prohibited entirely at Lands End and Baker Beach, which currently allow animals to be managed by voice control.

The suggestions are part of a 2,388-page, 14-pound draft environmental impact report outlining the proposed rules at 21 federal open spaces in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.

Also, the recreation area is proposing that dog owners at Ocean Beach, Fort Mason and four other open spaces in The City abide by more-constricting rules.

The new system is meant to strike a balance between park landscape, native wildlife and the 16 million visitors — which includes dog owners and hang-glider users — who visit the park’s open spaces each year.

Oh, fine. As if the new restrictions on dogs weren’t bad enough, now we find out they also apply to hang gliders.

So remember to take a plastic bag and clean up after your hang glider, because you know what a mess they can make on the beach.

Green Dream Machine: Van Jones admits eco-wackos only pretend we need more regulations

How can you explain Van Jones’ public admission that environmentalists just make all this crap up?

The left says Republicans are the ones who live in the past. Yet they seem to be blithely unaware of developments like cell phone video cameras and YouTube.

How else can you explain Van Jones’ public admission that environmentalists just make all this crap up?

OK, well, there is one other possibility: Van Jones is the second dumbest man alive. (Don’t worry, Van, as long as Joe Biden is still with us you’ll never be the dumbest man alive.)

And who can forget the classic, "Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn green"

The Australian takes a jab at the depressing details of the Gaian gala:

“So as you sit at home in front of a pot plant decorated with energy-saving light bulbs, unpacking second-hand solar-powered battery chargers from recycled newspaper wrappings, just before having a modest vegetarian organic dinner, you will surely feel the very warm inner glow of a morally superior Christmas deep inside you.”

Everybody sing along now:

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas,
I wish it didn’t start to snow.
Now my solar power’s
Been out for hours
And so my Christmas lights won’t glow

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas.
My turbines blades are standing still.
And I’m starting to feel the chill,
So of green I think I’ve had my fill.

Now let’s turn to page 98 of the Van Jones Hymnal. Please join us in singing “Rudolph the Red Knows Rain, Dear.”

rights-for-nature
Who will defend the rights of the flower when it is violated by the bee? Global Exchange, that's who.

Sign On San Diego has the strange story:

In an effort to ban everything from drilling oil to incinerating garbage, about a dozen communities across the country have adopted ordinances that give nature legal standing and water down the rights of businesses.

The long-debated philosophy could face court challenges. But it has gained traction among those who believe the environment needs greater protection, even while critics ridicule the thought of arming bugs with legal rights against foes such as lawn mowers.

Long debated? Debated by whom? Certainly not by anyone rational.

“What if nature had rights?” said Shannon Biggs, with Global Exchange. “What if the Amazon could sue an oil company for environmental damage?”

You’re not thinking big enough, Shannon. Why stop with nature suing man? The logical extension of giving rights to nature is that one part of nature will turn around and sue another. Next thing you know we’ll have flowers suing bees for stealing their pollen. We’ll have trees suing dogs for peeing on them. And eventually the tables will be turned and we’ll end up with a case in which a man sues a dog for humping his leg. The man will claim sexual assault and the dog’s defense will be, “He never said no, he just said ‘down boy.'” The world is spiraling out of control, damn it.

…Proponents, however, say they recognize their burgeoning movement may take some time to get results. Looking past the bug jokes and mocking poems, Price and others see their struggle to give nature legal standing as comparable to another historic effort that was years in the making.

“It took hundreds of challenges,” he said, “before racial segregation was overturned as the law of the land.”

No, Shannon, the plight of plants is even worse than racism. Just last night we ate some broccoli. That’s cannibalism, damn it.

Bono and Al Gore argue about which of them is the bigger environmental hypocrite

Here’s Bono expressing his philosohy in Tokyo back in 2008:

“My prayer is that we become better in looking after our planet.”

The environmental group Keen for Green responded with high praise:

If your (sic) looking for an environmental role model, Irish rockstar, Bono (born Paul David Hewson, May 10, 1960), of the band U2 is a good place to start. Bono … participated in a tree planting ceremony in Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2008, where efforts are being taken to turn a landfill into an 88 hectare forest. Bono has also been active in the Greenpeace community since 1993 when his entire band participated in a protest against a nuclear power plant, Sellafield, in England. And of course, Bono is self-reported avid recycler and drives a car which runs on ethanol instead of gasoline.

Now here’s Bono expressing his hypocrisy in Melbourne in 2010:

U2’S 360 Degrees tour, the most expensive rock spectacle ever, is here. The tour, with a daily running cost of $850,000, arrived on six 747 jets…

“You compare a tour by the number of trucks they use,” production manager Jake Berry said. “The Rolling Stones ran 46 trucks. We are running 55. This is the biggest.”

And here’s how the environmentalist groups responded:

(Sound of crickets)

And now, ladies and gentlemen, here’s U2 performing their international megahit, “We Are Big, Bloody Environmental Hypocrites (or Something Like That).”

Shedding a tear for the money they're losing by leaving that coal in the ground

The Navajo-Hopi Observer has the heap big news:

The Hopi Tribe has a message for the Sierra Club and other environmental groups: Keep out!

That is the response of the Hopi Tribal Council [earlier this fall] to what it says has been continuous concerted attacks from local and national environmental groups “bent on advancing their interests and agenda at the expense of the Hopi Tribe and its sovereign interest.”

The council wants the Sierra Club and other environmental groups and on-reservation organizations affiliated with these groups to know they are not welcome on the Hopi Reservation, declaring them persona non grata — no longer favored or welcome.

By a resolution approved 12-0, the council said environmentalists have deprived the tribe “of markets for its coal resources” and coal revenues needed to sustain governmental services, provide jobs for tribal members and safeguard Hopi culture and tradition.

In 2005, environmental groups played a significant role in the shutdown of the Mohave Generating Station, which the Hopi Council contends “deprived the Hopi Tribe of many millions of dollars of annual operating revenues,” according to the resolution.

Revenue losses from the Mohave power plant range from an estimated $6.5 million to $8.5 million annually.

The council feels that the economic viability of the Navajo Generating Station – the tribe’s only remaining coal customer – is also being threatened, and that environmentalists’ actions could lead to “total economic collapse of the tribe.”

So much for the environmentalists’ image of the peaceful red man, living in harmony with nature. Because as far as the Hopi are concerned, nature gave them a big ol’ pile of coal and it’s not doing anyone any good as long as it sits in the ground.

Convincing evidence that inbreeding is a terrible thing

In a remarkably candid interview for a BBC documentary, Prince Charles dismisses suggestions he is “loony” but confesses to lying on the floor at his Highgrove home to eavesdrop on visitors.

During the hour-long program, he is seen wandering around the extensive grounds of the Gloucestershire estate with gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

According to the News of the World, he tells the presenter: “I got a lot of flack for a lot of things. I mean, bewildered, frankly, as though you were doing something positively evil.

“I mean potty this, and potty that, loony this and loony that.”

But he admits: “I have eavesdropped on what the visitors have said.”

He reportedly tells Titchmarsh: “When they’re going round outside the windows sometimes you’ve got to lie on the floor.”

And he describes speaking to shrubbery as something which keeps him “relatively sane”.

“I happily talk to the plants and the trees, and listen to them. I think it’s absolutely crucial,” he is reported to say.

Does anyone know if Charles’ parents are brother and sister? That might explain the whole thing.

Eco-wackos versus Obamaniacs: Environmentalists are unhappy with Obama, may challenge him in primaries

Did you ever think you’d see the day that environmentalists abandoned Barack Obama? To paraphrase Guy Mitchell’s old country song, “The President has heartaches by the numbers, troubles by the score.”

Politico.com reports a bit of a rebellion brewing on the far left:

“Obama’s environmental record has been dismal, especially on climate, oil and endangered species,” said Kieran Suckling, executive director at the Tucson, Ariz.-based Center for Biological Diversity. “His early appointment of Ken Salazar as secretary of the interior showed very poor judgment. So yes, a pro-environment Democrat might find a surprising amount of support in a primary battle.”

Glenn Hurowitz, former media director at Greenpeace, aired his complaints in an article on the Huffington Post with this headline: “Environmentalists Need a New President.”

“It pains me to say it, but success will require a new president,” wrote Hurowitz, now a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy. “And that means that after the midterm elections, we need to start looking for a primary challenger who has the heart and soul required to save the planet from catastrophe and rescue American [sic] from its economic morass.”

Take it away, Guy.

The Heartland Institute reports that while the Senate Majority Hypocrite “and other high-profile environmental activists blasted carbon-based fuels at the Reid-sponsored summit, Reid and other bigwigs were caught on film driving to and from the summit in several SUVs.”

“I was absolutely astonished, not to mention appalled, that Harry Reid would retain a fleet of gas-guzzling SUVs so that he and a few aides would not have to walk the mere 100 yards to address environmental activists,” said Heartland Institute Senior Fellow James M. Taylor, who took the attached photo. “If greenhouse gas emissions are such a problem, you would think Reid might have actually made the short stroll through the parking lot, or at least retain Priuses rather than large SUVs for the summit,” said Taylor.

Read your own words, Taylor. The man would have had to walk 100 yards. One hundred yards. Have you seen Harry Reid lately? We’re not sure the decrepit old curmudgeon could actually walk that far under his own power.

Perfect: Los Angeles builds new school on toxic dump, names it after Al Gore built

Al Gore has been honored appropriately by the Los Angeles School District. They built a new school on top of a toxic dump and named it after the man who has come to symbolize environmental voodoo.

al-gore-statue
A statue of Al Gore standing in front of the new Carson-Gore Academy. Oh, wait, that's actually Al Gore.

Al Gore has been honored appropriately by the Los Angeles School District. They built a new school on top of a toxic dump and named it after the man who has come to symbolize environmental voodoo.

There are some classic comments in the L.A. Times report on the new school, the Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences, which is named after Rachel Carson and Gore, the world’s two leading purveyors of environmental nonsense:

“Renaming this terribly contaminated school after famous environmental advocates is an affront to the great work that these individuals have done to protect the public’s health from harm,” an environmental coalition wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Making sure the school is safe “would be an even better way to honor their contribution to society.”

Construction crews were working at the campus up to the Labor Day weekend, replacing toxic soil with clean fill. All told, workers removed dirt from two 3,800-square-foot plots to a depth of 45 feet, space enough to hold a four-story building. The soil had contained more than a dozen underground storage tanks serving light industrial businesses.

Additional contamination may have come from the underground tanks of an adjacent gas station. A barrier will stretch 45 feet down from ground level to limit future possible fuel leakage.

An oil well operates across the street, but officials said they’ve found no associated risks. Like many local campuses, this school also sits above an oil field, but no oil field-related methane has been detected.

Groundwater about 45 feet below the surface remains contaminated but also poses no risk, officials said.

Because the district imported clean dirt, the school is probably safe at the moment, said Jane Williams, executive director of the Kern County-based California Communities Against Toxics. But she and other critics, including Robina Suwol, who heads the locally based California Safe Schools coalition, worry that the pollution sources have not been adequately identified and that the dirty groundwater could recontaminate the soil.

Got that? The school is “probably” safe “at the moment.” Just imagine how excited the kids will be on their first day of school. And just imagine how excited the parents will be if the kids survive.

Good news! The EPA now factors “environmental justice” into its rulemaking process

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a 55-page “guidance” to help its employees “advance environmental justice” for low-income and minority communities.

As far as we’re concerned, “environmental justice” is what you’d call it if Al Gore froze to death while speaking about global warming. But that’s not the way the EPA looks at it.

CNSnews.com has the story:

EPA environmental justice
The Minority, Low-Income, Non-English Speaking and Indigenous Population Casino, where the drinks are watered down, but the environmental justice isn't.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a 55-page “guidance” to help its employees “advance environmental justice” for low-income and minority communities.

“Achieving environmental justice is an Agency priority and should be factored into every decision,” the document says.

You may ask yourself the obvious question that we asked ourselves: What the hell is environmental justice?

The EPA defines environmental justice as the “fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people, particularly minority, low-income, and indigenous populations, and tribes, in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.”

The guide states that from now on — in the process of developing rules, policy statements, risk assessments, and other regulatory actions — EPA managers and staffers must first ask themselves, “Does this action involve a topic that is likely to be of particular interest to or have particular impact upon minority, low-income, or indigenous populations, or tribes?”

If the answer is yes, the rule-writers must reach out to the affected minority and/or low-income communities. One section of the guide explains how EPA rule-writers may have to make “special efforts” to connect with people who may be uneducated or non-English-speaking.

Far as we can tell, that means environmental justice is served when the indigenous populations build indigenous population casinos.

Hit me, dealer. And power to the indigenous population!

White House science czar wants America to surrender to a “planetary regime”

Science Czar John Holdren wants America to be absorbed by The Regime

“You will be assimilated into the collective. Resistance is futile.”

There’s something wrong when the White House Science Czar sounds more like the Science Fiction Czar.

Turns out John Holdren wrote a truly alarming 1970s college textbook, “Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment,” with discredited population alarmists Paul and Anne Ehrlich.

World Net Daily has details of the text’s contents:

The authors argued that involuntary birth-control measures, including forced sterilization, may be necessary and morally acceptable under extreme conditions, such as widespread famine brought about by “climate change.”

They recommended the creation of a “planetary regime” created to act as an “international superagency for population, resources, and environment.”

“Such a Planetary Regime could control the development, administration, conservation, and distribution of all natural resources, renewable or nonrenewable, at least insofar as international implications exist,” they argued.

“Thus, the Regime could have the power to control pollution not only in the atmosphere and the oceans, but also in such freshwater bodies as rivers and lakes that cross international boundaries or that discharge into the oceans.”

Those are the words of your White House Science Czar, who is obviously a member of both the Democrat Party and the Borg. Not that there’s much difference.

New York Times environmental reporter records the worst song ever written

Back in February, 2009, we posted a story about Neil Young’s new CD and called it the worst CD ever recorded. But New York Times environmental blogger Andrew C. Revkin has just recorded a new song that gives Young some stiff competition.

Revkin, it turns out, is no mere reporter. He is a singer/songwriter extraordinaire. And when we say extraordinaire, we mean shitty.

Read Revkin’s own words from his New York Times Dot Earth blog:

With music in mind, and reflecting on the unrelenting gulf gusher, I’ve decided it’s time for my first musical Dot Earth post. I’ve written a number of posts about music’s role in exploring the human relationship with the environment, but I haven’t sung a post — until now at least.

A few years ago, I wrote a song called “Liberated Carbon,” about humanity’s long love affair with fossil fuels and our climb up what Loren Eiseley once called the heat ladder. The unrelenting leak in the Gulf of Mexico is liberated carbon at its worst.

On Thursday, I stopped by the Bronxville, N.Y., recording studio of my Uncle Wade bandmate Al Hemberger and his brother, Ted, and we recorded a slightly updated version of the song, inserting BP where OPEC once was mentioned.

Unfortunately, Revkin’s fancy, new studio version of the song isn’t embeddable, so if you want to hear it instead of the older, poor quallty video version embedded with this story, you’ll have to go to the source link at the bottom of this story.

Should you choose to listen to neither version, here’s the first verse and chorus just to give you a little flavor of Mr. Revkin’s lyrical stylings:

LIBERATED CARBON (© 2010 Andrew Revkin)
It took a thousand generations for our species to rise.

But gathering and hunting was no way to get by.

We yearned to burn more than dung and sticks.

Then someone came along and said, “Hey, try lighting this.”

He opened up the ground and showed us coal and oil.

He said, “Come liberate some carbon. It’ll make your blood boil.”

Liberated carbon, it’ll spin your wheels.

Liberated carbon it’ll nuke your meals.

Liberated carbon, it’ll turn your night to day.

Come on and liberate some carbon, babe, it’s the American way.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

War is simple to Republicans. Kill the bad guys, help the good guys, win the war. But as Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) demonstrates, Democrats have other concerns, more nuanced concerns, more sophisticated concerns. Like whether we’re fighting a green war.

If this doesn’t define the difference between Republicans and Democrats, nothing does.

Giffords actually asked General Petraeus if, in light of the BP oil spill, the military is going to start using renewable energy at our Afghanistan bases to reduce the need for oil.

Even a cool, calm customer like Petraeus found himself at a loss for words.

Congresswoman Giffords, we salute you. You are the official IHateTheMedia.com Idiot of the Day.

A green job is just a con job with a paint job

You know all those green jobs liberal politicians keep prattling on about? Turns out the government is spending billions on them without actually knowing what they are. The words just sound so damn nice.

Your tax dollars are what puts the green in green jobs

You know all those green jobs liberal politicians keep prattling on about? Turns out the government is spending billions on them without actually knowing what they are. The words just sound so damn nice.

Byron York describes the dubious definitions:

Buried deep inside a federal newsletter on March 16 was something called a “notice of solicitation of comments” from the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the Department of Labor.

“BLS is responsible for developing and implementing the collection of new data on green jobs,” said the note in the Federal Register, which is widely read by government bureaucrats and almost never seen by the general public. But the notice said there is “no widely accepted standard definition of ‘green jobs.'” To help find that definition, the Labor Department asked that readers send in suggestions.

Prince Charles urges world to follow Islamic “spiritual principles” to save the environment.

Queen Elizabeth’s dullard son says that man’s destruction of the environment violates the tenets of all religions – especially Islam.

Prince Charles is looking for a religion that says the environment can be saved with private jets and luxurious yachts

Whoever invented the phrase “royal pain in the ass” must have been thinking of Prince Charles.

Queen Elizabeth’s dullard son says that man’s destruction of the environment violates the tenets of all religions – especially Islam.

The Daily Mail UK reports the moron’s musings:

Charles, who is a practising Christian, spoke in depth about his own study of the Qu’ran which, he said, tells its followers that there is ‘no separation between Man and Nature’ and says we must always live within Nature’s mean and limits.

‘From what I know of the Qu’ran, again and again it describes the natural world as the handiwork of a unitary benevolent power,’ he said.

‘It very explicitly describes Nature as possessing an “intelligibility” and that there is no separation between Man and Nature, precisely because there is no separation between the natural world and God.‘It offers a completely integrated view of the Universe where religion and science, mind and matter are all part of one living, conscious whole.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Charles can surround his opinions with all the high-sounding apologist crappola he wants, but let’s be honest here. Have you seen this guy’s wife? If you were married to a woman with a face like hers, you’d also endorse a religion that believes in the burkha.

Sustainable Brick Made from Sand, Bacteria and Pee

It seems like pee, or more specifically urea, is becoming quite the sustainable ingredient…

These Better Bricks are created through a chain of chemical reactions known as microbial-induced calcite precipitation. Once all the ingredients are combined, the bacteria serves as a glue that binds the sand together, creating a brick that is as tough as a fired-clay brick or even marble and requires no baking to achieve that strength.

If Better Bricks replaced all traditionally-fired bricks, 800 million tons of CO2 emissions would be eliminated each year.

Remember when eco-wackos told us to put a brick in the toilet to save water? If you do that with these bricks, it would truly be the ultimate in recycling.

Navy F-18 passes biofuel test, fails logic test

The Navy just conducted a test that proved two seemingly contradictory concepts. First, it proved that an F-18 can fly using biofuel. And second, it proved that biofuel is an idea that’ll never get off the ground.

The same people who pay $67.50 for biofuel say they can cut medical costs.

The Navy just conducted a test that proved two seemingly contradictory concepts. First, it proved that an F-18 can fly using biofuel. And second, it proved that biofuel is an idea that’ll never get off the ground.

National Review’s Planet Gore makes sense of it all:

I was there when the Green Hornet flew today, and the 50-50 biofuel mix burned superbly. Thanks to the excellent work of our fuel-certification engineers, there was no doubt that it would. They checked it thoroughly for spec and pronounced it functionally equivalent to JP-5. But even though SECNAV maintains that the Navy “will continue to be an early adopter of alternative energy sources,” he might take a closer look at the price tag.

The press release says that the Defense Energy Support Center, which buys fuel for the military, paid $2.7 million for 40,000 gallons of the biofuel. That works out to $67.50 a gallon, although the official Navy fact sheet says the cost was only $33 a gallon. Still, next to the $1.40 a gallon cost of petroleum-derived JP-5, it’s not exactly a bargain — worse even than buying gas in Europe.

Maybe we can cut back on body armor to pay for it . . .

$67.50 per gallon? Fill ‘er up, dude. Sounds like cap-and-trade has already been implemented in the military.
