Pelosi spends $140,000 to install energy efficient light bulbs in House cafeteria

That’s a great idea, you know, because those newfangled energy efficient bulbs will pay for themselves in no time. No time at all. What’s that? It’ll take ten years for them to pay for themselves. Oh, fer Christ’s sake.

The lights are on, but nobody's home

That’s a great idea, you know, because those newfangled energy efficient bulbs will pay for themselves in no time. No time at all.

What’s that? It’ll take ten years for them to pay for themselves. Oh, fer Christ’s sake.

CNSnews.com reports the story:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a Capitol Hill press conference Wednesday to unveil new light fixtures in the House cafeteria. The light fixtures cost $140,000 and will take almost 10 years to pay off in saved energy.

Ten years. The payoff on this is going to take ten friggin’ years. Got that?  The story continues:

Ayers said that the new light fixtures and window shades were installed in the cafeteria, located in the basement of the Rayburn House Office Building, because the LED [light emitting diode] light fixtures have become much less expensive.

“It’s now becoming much more affordable, so we’re sort of kicking the tires on it for the moment. It seems to work terrific. It’s got great energy savings, and it’s got – we think – great lighting quality, and the price of the light fixtures just in the last year has come down significantly.”

Of course, we’re just swimming in spare cash right now, so this is the perfect time for Pelosi to blow $140,000 on light bulbs that will take ten years to pay for themselves.

Dim bulb. And make no mistake, when we say that we’re referring to the Speaker herself.

United Nations Environmental Ambassador building a 20,000 square foot mansion

“What kind of U.N. environmental ambassador builds a 20,000 square-foot home with a six-car garage, an elevator and a lagoon?” But we ask a different question: What kind of boneheads hire a jetsetting supermodel as an environmental ambassador and actually expect her to act like something other than a jetsetting supermodel?

That new 20,000 square foot house is only the second most impressive structure in Tom Brady's life

The Boston Herald asks, “What kind of U.N. environmental ambassador builds a 20,000 square-foot home with a six-car garage, an elevator and a lagoon?”

But we ask a different question: What kind of boneheads hire a jetsetting supermodel as an environmental ambassador and actually expect her to act like something other than a jetsetting supermodel?

Turns out the boneheads are the United Nations and the supermodel is Gisele Bundchen.

Bundchen and New England Patriots quarterback husband Tom Brady’s new home in Brentwood, California has greens seeing red.

The Herald reports the environmental fumble:

Hypocritical congressman’s Earth Day message: Trees make better drivers

In a pre-Earth Day speech before the Alliance for Community Trees on Wednesday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said that more trees lining urban streets makes people better drivers.

We should have expected Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer, a Democrat, to make his presence known on Earth Day. Hell, any time ol’ Earl spots a chance to say something ludicrous about the environment, he jumps at it.

earl blumenauer
Democrat Earl Blumenauer, who rode his bicycle down a tree-lined street to Copenhagen

In a pre-Earth Day speech before the Alliance for Community Trees on Wednesday, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) said that more trees lining urban streets makes people better drivers.

“Having an urban tree canopy actually retards speeding,” said Blumenauer.

“The evidence is powerful that people, when they are given a streetscape with street trees, that can–it has an effect,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s calming or it changes the visual impact on them, but it changes driving behavior and makes those communities safer.”

Please bear in mind that we have nothing against trees here at IHateTheMedia.com. In fact, IHTM is headquartered in one of the loveliest tree-lined towns in America.

But Blumenauer is the same Oregon Congressman who proposed a tax on toilet paper to save our precious resources and then jetted off with Nancy Pelosi to save the world at the Copenhagen global warming boondoggle.

So Blumenauer’s the kind of environmentalist who says save energy, then wastes it by jetting off to Copenhagen. The kind of guy who wants to tax toilet paper, but knows he’ll never have to use any because his butt is kept spotless by a non-stop parade of environmentalists who kiss it clean.

Somehow, we figure that if this guy is promoting the importance of trees one day, he’ll propose a tax on leaves the next day.

James Cameron goes to the Amazon, bores the hell out of natives

Hollywood writer-producer-director-conspicuous consumer James Cameron is starting to believe his own bullshit. After creating Avatar, he’s become a born again environmentalist.

James Cameron Amazon
“James, James, James of the Jungle, brave as he can be. Watch out for that treeeeeeee.”

James Cameron goes to the Amazon, bores the hell out of natives.

Hollywood writer-producer-director-conspicuous consumer James Cameron is starting to believe his own bullshit. After creating Avatar, he’s become a born again environmentalist.

The New York Times dutifully traipsed after Cameron on an Avatar-ish adventure to Brazil, where the director dappled himself with facepaint and spoke like a character from one of his films.

The Times reports on the hypocritical hype:

“The snake kills by squeezing very slowly,” Mr. Cameron said to more than 70 indigenous people, some holding spears and bows and arrows, under a tree here along the Xingu River. “This is how the civilized world slowly, slowly pushes into the forest and takes away the world that used to be,” he added.

As if to underscore the point, seconds later a poisonous green snake fell out of a tree, just feet from where Mr. Cameron’s wife sat on a log. Screams rang out. Villagers scattered. The snake was killed. Then indigenous leaders set off on a dance of appreciation, ending at the boat that took Mr. Cameron away. All the while, Mr. Cameron danced haltingly, shaking a spear, a chief’s feathery yellow and white headdress atop his head.

The boat pulled away and Cameron waved goodbye to his newfound forest friends.

“Can you believe that crazy American woman was afraid of a snake,” one native laughed as he waved adieu. “By the way, you owe me five bucks. I told you I could convince that moron to paint his face.”

Proof that leftists never get laid: Ten green sins that can ruin your love life

No wonder the left doesn’t believe in abstinence. When you actually spend time worrying about whether your sex life is ecologically-correct, you’re never getting laid. Stefanie Iris Weiss, author of Eco-Sex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable, warns that nothing can ruin your love life faster than committing these green sins.

Sin #1: Courting by car. Size does matter, especially when you’re talking about Big Oil. What woman in her right mind would want to go out with a guy who drives a sporty, luxurious, gas guzzling car?

Sin #2: Poison perfume. What? Big oil again? Weiss points out that, “Most perfumes are derived from petroleum, and some contain potential neurotoxins.” So she recommends that you wear organic essential oils. Does anyone know if whale oil qualifies as an organic essential oil?

Sin#3: Eating unsustainable chocolate. Don’t trifle with truffles unless they’re organic and fair trade certified. It’s been our experience that nothing turns a woman off faster than the thought of exploited field workers.

Music to celebrate Earth Hour: Santana’s Turn Your Lights On

Earth Hour 2010. Think of it as your chance to party like a North Korean

Earth Hour is Saturday night, March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. It’s an event we traditionally celebrate by turning on every light in the house, firing up the flat screen TV, and burning every kilowatt possible.

Think of South Korea as the vibrant, electricity-filled life you have now. Think of North Korea as the dark, cold life environmentalists dream of.

Earth Hour is Saturday night, March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. It’s an event we traditionally celebrate by turning on every light in the house, firing up the flat screen TV, and burning every kilowatt possible.

But the eco-wackos of the world celebrate by turning off all their lights, singing Kumbaya and huddling together for warmth. In other words, it’s like a typical night in North Korea. And that’s the future environmentalists see for you.

The Melbourne Herald-Sun points out the stupidity of it all:

The land where the lights are permanently out, as the famous satellite photograph shows of the stunning difference between the northern and southern ends of the Korean peninsula….

Nothing better captures the utter inanity of the cult of global warming and its characterisation of carbon dioxide as an even greater Satan than George W. Bush’s America than Earth Hour. Insufferably smarmy, quite pointless, contradictory, utterly inchoate.

Although I have to concede a certain bizarre honesty in the way the concept projects – a tacit admission that the anti-CO2 crusade actually does seek to literally turn off the lights…. Earth Hour seems to project that looking – literally – like North Korea is not only a good thing but where the aggressive campaign against CO2 will end up.

No, no, no, comes back the response. In the post-carbon future, alternative energy will provide all the light we want.

So if we can, if we supposedly will, look like today’s South Korea in that glorious future, why not celebrate turning on the lights?

Unbeknownst the Willie Nelson, he penned the eco-wackos’ anthem: “Turn out the lights, the party’s over.”

We say, “Turn on the lights, the party’s just getting started.” And we invite you to join us, friends, in noting Earth Hour with a celebration of the wonders of electricity.

Obama introduces environmentally-friendly Easter eggs (apparently real eggs aren’t green enough)

There are days when this blogging thing is easy. Like shooting Easter bunnies in a barrel. Fox News has details on the White House’s latest environmental inanity.

61% of those under the age of six no longer believe in the Easter Bunny. 49% of those over the age of 18 no longer believe in BarackObama.

There are days when this blogging thing is easy. Like shooting Easter bunnies in a barrel.

Fox News has details on the White House’s latest environmental inanity:

This year’s White House Easter Egg roll will be eggs-actly what the bunny ordered. The environmentally concerned bunny, that is.

A White House announcement Monday said the eggs at this year’s April 5 roll will be made from paperboard that contains no wood fibers from endangered forests, is recyclable and features vegetable-oil based inks and a water-based coating.

What’s more, they’ll come in purple, pink, green and yellow and feature the stamped signatures of both President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Just what every three year old kid wants — a phony autograph of Barack Obama on a phony Easter egg.

Doesn’t that just sum up this administration perfectly?

The Edge still can’t build what he was hoping for

David Evans wants to build a home on the soaring landscape above Malibu beach. It’s got all the correct environmental bells and whistles, too.

No Irish rockers allowed. The Edge finds out that sustainability just means sustaining views of rich leftists.

David Evans, aka the Edge, is the guitar player for Irish rock band U2, the most eco- and politically-correct band in history. U2 defined politically-correct standards of rock and roll.

Now the Edge wants to build a home on the soaring landscape above Malibu beach. It’s got all the correct environmental bells and whistles, too, the Edge says.

“We just had this dream of building a house that was in perfect harmony with these hills,” Mr. Evans said. “We see it as something that could be a bench mark of sustainability.”

But in the ever exacting bite of karma, a group of green eco-warriors are fighting the Edge’s new home. The Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy and the rich folks who live below are trying to stop the project, which includes, Gaia forbid, a road.

Maybe sustainability and environmental awareness are now just code words that help rich people keep the Irish out of their neighborhoods.

“It’s for the children” has fallen on hard times, replaced by “It’s for the environment.”

The children really don’t need our help as much these days anyway, now that they’re all being adopted by Madonna and Angelina Jolie. So it’s only fair that the rest of us should adopt the environment as our cause. No matter how expensive and stupid it may be.

Headline of the Day: Daughter blames mother for global warming

My daughter complains that I flatulate more often than most individuals. Furthermore, she claims that the gas an individual passes contributes to global warming. I don’t know if I am physically able to keep my gas to myself to go green. Is my daughter really right?

In our role as Media Watchdogs (hey, did we hear laughter out there?) we’ve learned that there are advice columns and then there are advice columns.

The St Louis Post-Dispatch features a medical column by Dr. Paul Donohue in which a recent reader question went, shall we say, over the line.

Dear Dr. Donohue — My daughter complains that I flatulate more often than most individuals. Furthermore, she claims that the gas an individual passes contributes to global warming. I don’t know if I am physically able to keep my gas to myself to go green. Is my daughter really right?

The way we see it, there are only two choices: either she goes green or everyone around her turns green.

Green news: The deficit isn’t the only this the Obama administration can grow

Just when you think the federal government can’t get any dumber, they top themselves. As they did in this story about the latest green scam in Portland, Oregon.

We predict that this green building will bleed red ink

Just when you think the federal government can’t get any dumber, they top themselves. As they did in this story about the latest green scam in Portland, Oregon.

The New York Times has the green details:

… the federal government plans to plant its own bold garden directly above a downtown plaza. As part of a $133 million renovation, the General Services Administration is planning to cultivate “vegetated fins” that will grow more than 200 feet high on the western facade of the main federal building here, a vertical garden that changes with the seasons and nurtures plants that yield energy savings.

“They will bloom in the spring and summer when you want the shade, and then they will go away in the winter when you want to let the light in,” said Bob Peck, commissioner of public buildings for the G.S.A. “Don’t ask me how you get them irrigated.”

And we’d say irrigation is the least of the problems. Who prunes the growth and harvests the crops?

… Maybe the same folks who wash skyscraper windows, the architects say. Perhaps the exterior concrete panels removed in the renovation could be reused as salmon habitat in a nearby river.

The G.S.A. says the building will use 60 percent to 65 percent less energy than comparable buildings and estimates a savings of $280,000 annually in energy costs. Solar panels could provide up to 15 percent of the building’s power needs. The use of rainwater and low-flow plumbing fixtures will reduce potable water consumption by 68 percent. And energy for lighting will be halved.

Yes, perhaps the building will be pruned by the same folks who wash skyscraper windows. Perhaps.

Or since our agricultural products are all harvested by illegal aliens because that’s a job Americans supposedly won’t do, perhaps the government will have to bring in illegal Sherpa aliens to scale the sides of the building.

And what are the odds that the entire $280,000 in energy savings will be completely eaten up by the cost of harvesting. Not to mention the cost of legal settlements paid out to pedestrians who are injured by falling musk melons.

Your government in action, your tax dollars at work.

Lunatic environmentalist wants Americans to have fewer babies so African women can have more

Alex Renton, a British environmentalist and lunatic thinks the world would be better off if American and Australian women had fewer babies so African women can have more of them.

IN case you ever wanted to know what a lunatic looks like, here's a photo of Alex Renton
IN case you ever wanted to know what a lunatic looks like, here's a photo of Alex Renton

Seriously. Alex Renton, a British environmentalist and lunatic – but we repeat ourselves – thinks the world would be better off if American and Australian women had fewer babies so African women can have more of them. And he said it with a straight face.

The worst thing that you or I can do for the planet is to have children. If they behave as the average person in the rich world does now, they will emit some 11 tonnes of CO² every year of their lives. In their turn, they are likely to have more carbon-emitting children who will make an even bigger mess…

In 2050, 95% of the extra population will be poor and the poorer you are, the less carbon you emit. By today’s standards, a cull of Australians or Americans would be at least 60 times as productive as one of Bangladeshis… As Rachel Baird, who works on climate change for Christian Aid, says: “Often in the countries where the birth rate is highest, emissions are so low that they are not even measurable. Look at Burkina Faso.” So why ask them to pay in unborn children for our profligacy…?

But how do you reduce population in countries where women’s rights are already achieved and birth-control methods are freely available? Could children perhaps become part of an adult’s personal carbon allowance? Could you offer rewards: have one child only and you may fly to Florida once a year?

After all, based on current emissions and life expectancy, one less British child would permit some 30 women in sub-Saharan Africa to have a baby and still leave the planet a cleaner place.

This is a great idea, but Alex has just scratched the surface here. Not only will those 30 starving, diseased African children produce fewer emissions each year, but they’ll lead much shorter lives than their American and Australian counterparts, thereby enriching Mother Earth even further.

These people give lunatics a bad name.

Green power proves underwhelming Down Under

At some point you have to start feeling sorry for the greens. No one wants their cars. No one wants their light bulbs. No one wants their taxes. And most of all, no one wants to be scammed by their government.

Turn out the lights, Perth. The green party's over.
Turn out the lights, Perth. The green party's over.

At some point you have to start feeling sorry for the greens. No one wants their cars. No one wants their light bulbs. No one wants their taxes. And most of all, no one wants to be scammed by their government.

The Sydney Morning Herald tells the story:

In a move that could cost the Federal Government’s GreenPower scheme public support, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has asked a state government agency and energy suppliers to stop telling customers that using GreenPower will ‘‘make a real difference’’ to the environment. Almost a million households now buy GreenPower, paying extra on their power bills to support renewable energy and shrink their carbon footprint.

But they will no longer be told it leads to ‘‘significant results for our environment’’.

Turns out the only thing that’s significant about green power is its cost.

Global warming lunatics dump manure in TV star’s driveway

Use a little horse sense, ladies, use a little horse sense.

A misguided gaggle of global warming harpies dressed as suffragettes dumped a pile of horse manure in the driveway of a British TV host Jeremy Clarkson to protest vehicle emissions.

Six women stood by the dung in the drive of his home in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, with a sign that read: “This is what you’re landing us in.”

The protesters from direct action group Climate Rush said they were being as “blasé as him” about emissions.

Fact is, the suffragettes have the whole story backwards. If it weren’t for the internal combustion engine, the world would be awash in horse manure. Just imagine the horror of the eco-wackos if six billion people rode horses and their manure was hip deep in every city around the world.

The same wackos would be protesting horses and demanding that the government subsidize the development of the internatl combustion engine.

Putting the mental in environmentalism: Introducing the wind-up eco-vibrator

The eco-sex toy – dubbed the “Earth Angel” – uses a small wind-up handle to power up rechargeable batteries inside the casing.
It had originally been planned as a sex aid for the Third World where batteries and electricity supplies are unreliable.

Ladies, that heat you’re feeling isn’t global warming, it’s your brand new eco-vibrator.

We really don’t want to touch this story, so we’ll just quote the Austrian Times:

Green fans are getting a buzz out of a new hand-cranked vibrator that makers say could help save the planet.

The eco-sex toy – dubbed the “Earth Angel” – uses a small wind-up handle to power up rechargeable batteries inside the casing.
It had originally been planned as a sex aid for the Third World where batteries and electricity supplies are unreliable.

But the Irish manufacturers Camden Enterprises have been swamped with interest from Green followers after displaying the vibrator at the Ars Electronica fair in Linz, Upper Austria, this week.

“We wanted to produce an environmentally friendly sex toy that appealed to all consumers regardless of gender, age or ethnicity.

“It has been in its development stage for the past two years and we are excited that our vision has become reality,” said a spokesman.

So a priest, a rabbi and an environmentalist walk into a bar...

Environmentalists are atwitter over a recent photo of a Norwegian glacier that shows water gushing from a crack in the ice formation.

What? Isn’t it summer, you ask? Don’t glaciers typically melt a little during summer?

Sure, but for the same people who make fun of people who see the image of the Virgin Mary burnt on the side of their toast or for football fans who see the Philadelphia Eagles emblem mysteriously appear in a bowl of Cheerios, the water flowing from this fissure in ice is actually proof that the earth is sad. If you look closely, or take LSD, the ice formation resembles a face. And, if the acid is really, really strong, it looks like water is pouring out of the eye. Like tears!

Yes, this Norwegian glacier has been transmogrified into a weeping Mother Nature. A crying Gaia. The Virgin Mary on the rocks.

But perhaps there’s another explanation.

Perhaps Mother Earth is laughing so hard at these dumbass environmentalists that she’s actually crying.

Green Jobs Czar Van Jones: Republicans are assholes

There is nothing green about Jones, the green movement is simply a convenient vehicle for his, and Barack Obama’s, social justice (aka marxism) movement. But hold on–aren’t republicans part of the social fabric of this country. If so, where is the social justice in him calling Republicans assholes?

By now you’ve all heard of about the self-described communist, Green Czar Van Jones. You know him, the Berkeley radical who is going to save the earth and transform America at the same time by “moving formerly incarcerated people from jail cells to solar cells—helping to harvest the sun, heal the land, and repair our souls.”

It’s all bull. There is nothing green about Jones. The green movement is simply a convenient vehicle for his, and Barack Obama’s, social justice (aka Marxism) movement. But hold on–aren’t Republicans part of the social fabric of this country. If so, where is the social justice in him calling Republicans assholes?

The bigger question to us is, where are Republican leaders on the subject of Van Jones? Are we really at the tipping point in America where we don’t scream about the president picking a Marxist as a key advisor to cripple the economy?

Environmentalists will be pissed off if you don’t pee in the shower

A Brazilian environmental group wants you to save the rainforest by peeing in the shower. We see a problem. There’s another eco-wacko ad campaign that tries to convince people to save water by showering with a friend.

Of course. Absolutely. For sure. Why didn’t we think of that?

A Brazilian environmental group wants you to save the rainforest by peeing in the shower. Here’s the logic behind the strange request: If a person flushes the toilet just one less time per day it would save 1,157 gallons of water per year. Multiply that by however many Brazilians there are and you save a bunch of water.

Scientist/astronaut “feels” earth has been scarred by humans

Bob Thirsk, a Canadian astronaut orbiting in the International Space Station, has concluded that earth bears the scars of human destruction. He reached this conclusion by using something a bit less scientific than the scientific method -– his feelings.

Before you begin reading this story, please click on the video clip so that you have the appropriate mood music. You know, something schmaltzy, something syrupy, something feelingish.

Bob Thirsk, a Canadian astronaut orbiting in the International Space Station, has concluded that earth bears the scars of human destruction. He reached this conclusion by using something a bit less scientific than the scientific method -– his feelings.

Here’s how Reuters tells Thirsk’s tale:

Bob Thirsk, who is two months into a planned six-month stay aboard the station, said he is mostly in awe when he looks out the window, particularly at the sliver of atmosphere wrapped around the planet.

”It’s a very thin veil of atmosphere around the Earth that keeps us alive,” Thirsk said during an in-flight news conference. “Most of the time when I look out the window I’m in awe. But there are some effects of the human destruction of the Earth as well.”

”This is probably just a perception, but I just have the feeling that the glaciers are melting, the snow capping the mountains is less than it was 12 years ago when I saw it last time,” Thrisk said.

This is probably just a perception on our part, too:

Thirsk’s credibility is disappearing faster than the glaciers.

Gwyneth Paltrow: It isn’t easy being pseudo-green

Don't know if this ensemble is greeen, Gwyneth, but it's definitely red hot

Did anyone happen to notice the moment when Gwyneth Paltrow went from being cute as a button to being nuttier than a fruitcake?

The out-of-touch leftist actress recently got together with her gal pal Cameron Diaz to tell the little people how to go green.

People magazine reports: “For Gwyneth, going green doesn’t mean giving up her designer duds. The actress recommends trying out Stella McCartney’s new Eco Collection, which ranges from $435 to $1535 and is made from 100% organic cotton and recycled materials, available at Stella McCartney stores…Cameron’s stylish picks include green footwear including Olsen Haus vegan shoes available at camillaboutique.com. ‘Olsen Haus shoes are vegan and natural linen; they are fun and sexy with a pair of skinny jeans,’ says Cameron.”

Got that? $1535 for some designer duds made out of recycled materials. Or if you’re in a bargain hunting mood, as little as $175 for a pair of shoes.

You know what would be really good for the environment, Gwyneth? Wear some of that crap more than once.

Liberalism in retreat: First in Europe, now in Argentina

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is hot, her interventionist policies are not

In last month’s European elections, liberalism was rejected in one country after another. Now you can add Argentina to the list of countries going conservative.

Reuters reports: “Argentines cast ballots in congressional elections on Sunday and are expected to throw out allies of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in a rejection of her interventionist economic policies and combative style.”

Fernandez is a leftist often compared to Hillary Clinton because she succeeded her husband, ex-President Nestor Kirchner. Under her rule, Argentina’s economy has stagnated after a six-year expansion. As a result, Fernandez has seen her approval rating fall to a mere 30%.

It appears that Fernandez’ Peronist party will lose its majority in Argentina’s lower house and barely cling to a majority in the Senate.

And she didn’t even have an auto industry to nationalize.
