UN Special Rapporteur La Rue found is in trouble at the Organization of the Islamic Conference because he he said, “Restrictions (on free speech) should never be used to protect particular institutions or abstract notions, concepts or beliefs, including religious ones.” Islam.
Frank La Rue is a UN Special Rapporteur on the right to free expression. (Only a bloated bureaucracy like the UN could come up with a title like “rapporteur.”)
Anyway, La Rue found himself in hot water last week at the Organization of the Islamic Conference. All because he had the nerve to say, “Restrictions (on free speech) should never be used to protect particular institutions or abstract notions, concepts or beliefs, including religious ones.”
He went on to say that “defamation of religions does not accord with international standards on freedom of expression.”
That’s when the couscous hit the fan. Angry Muslim representatives from Africa, the Gulf States, Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt, Malaysia, Sudan and Yemen want La Rue fired for…well…for supporting free speech.
Luckily, La Rue found support from the United States, the United Kingdom and several other nations who pointed out that the UN’s free speech rapporteur should feel free to speak freely.
In the words of MediaWatchWatch.org, “Allah forbid that an officer responsible for the protection of freedom of expression should be free to express his support for freedom of expression!”

You never know what to expect from the sinister Sanchez sisters – Linda and Loretta both Democrat representatives from California – but you know it won’t be good.
Rep Linda Sanchez, a California Democrat, says, “Congress has no interest in censoring.” Of course, she said that in defense of her bill that censors the internet.
Sister Linda has introduced the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act. Despite her claim that “Congress has no interest in censoring,” Civil libertarians call the overly-broad bill “the Internet Censorship Act of 2009.”
“Put simply,” she commented in a piece for the Huffington Post, “this legislation would be used as a tool for a judge and jury to determine whether there is significant evidence to prove that a person ‘cyberbullied’ another. That is: did they have the required intent, did they use electronic means of communication, and was the communication severe, hostile, and repeated? So — bloggers, e-mailers, texters, spiteful exes and those who have blogged against this bill have no fear — your words are still protected under the same American values.”
Sanchez shows her deep commitment to the First Amendment by including the phrase “so-called free speech” in her HuffPo article.
Methods of communication where so-called hostile speech would be criminalized include telephones, websites, e-mail, instant messaging, blogs, and text messages. No word of whether sexting is included.
Murphy’s Law says, “Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.” It’s corollary, Sanchez’ Law says, “Whatever I say is wrong is wrong.”

“A group of 57 Organization of Islamic Countries,” a February 25 Lou Dobbs report says, “the largest block at the United Nations, has been pushing it, out of concern, it says, for anti-Islamic behavior, saying, “This resolution is a major step towards sensitizing the international community on the serious impact of defamation of religions….”
“While appearing in name to promote tolerance, the implementation of this concept actually fosters intolerance and has served to justify restrictions on human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
Backers of the Anti-Blasphemy Resolution say their goal is simply to curtail speech that offends religion, specifically Islam. Religious groups and free speech advocates say the true goal is to extend the influence of Sharia law in the West.
The attached video is shocking. So shocking that you’ll immediately wonder why every major news organization hasn’t carried it. This measure is obviously in direct conflict with the U.S. Constitution and a clear violation of free speech.

The Turkish government has escalated its war on the free press to a new level by imposing a $500,000,000 fine on the Dogan Media Group, a Turkish publishing company. Dogan says it will fight the fine in court.
The Turkish Journalists’ Society has objected to the fine and called it a dangerous way to silence press outlets that criticize the government.
“Mr. Prime Minister’s anger caused by the news stories he disliked,” said a TGC statement, “has turned into a concrete attempt to silence (media) with the extremely high tax levy imposed on the Dogan Media Group.”
We know we have readers in Turkey, so rest assured that we’re watching our P’s and Q’s. A half a billion dollar fine could put quite a dent in our petty cash.
