There appears to be a disconnect between what Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator John Kerry, D-MA, are saying about U.S. relations with Pakistan. Administration officials, and Secretary Clinton, don’t seem particularly pleased by his recent effort in Islamabad.

Yesterday during his visit there Kerry touted that relations between Washington and Islamabad had been “re-set” after the surprise US Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil.

Yet today, when asked whether US-Pakistan relations had actually turned the corner, Clinton said there was a long way to go.

“We are working very hard to have an understanding with our counterparts in Pakistan about the best way forward,” she said. “There are important concerns and many questions that have to be addressed and worked through.”

In fact, Clinton made it clear that Kerry didn’t speak for the administration, offering perhaps a pointed dig at the fact that Kerry issued a joint statement with Pakistani officials that was billed as a joint US-Pakistan statement (administration officials insist this was Kerry freelancing).

Remember just a few short months ago when Kerry was supposedly being groomed as Hillary’s replacement as Secretary of State?

Now he’s called a freelancer. A loose cannon. A gigolo who marries wealthy women for their money.

Well, actually, that last one had nothing to do with this story, but we always like to throw it in.

In a new effort to win hearts and minds in Pakistan, USAID — the development arm of the US government — is donating $20m (£12m) to the country to create a local Urdu version of the show.

The project aims to boost education in Pakistan, where many children have no access to regular schooling.

The show is to be filmed in Lahore and aired later in the year.

“The programme is part of a series of ventures that is aimed at developing the educational infrastructure in the country,” Virginia Morgan, a spokesperson for USAID, told the BBC.

“Education is one of the vital sectors that need help in Pakistan.”

The show will be set in a village in Pakistan — rather than the streets of New York — with roadside tea shop and residents sitting on their verandas.

The remake will star a puppet called Rani, the six-year-old daughter of a peasant farmer, with pigtails and a school uniform, according to Britain’s Guardian newspaper.

Meanwhile, police in Karachi, another major Pakistani city, said one police officer was killed and five people were injured in an explosion. Authorities were investigating the cause.

Now he is alarmed – alarmed, we tell you – that Pakistan is treating Taliban prisoners harshly instead of giving them all the rights they’re guaranteed under the American constitution.

The New York Times has the news of the constitutional scholar’s dismay:

The Obama administration is expressing alarm over reports that thousands of political separatists and captured Taliban insurgents have disappeared into the hands of Pakistan’s police and security forces, and that some may have been tortured or killed.

The issue came up in a State Department report to Congress last month that urged Pakistan to address this and other human rights abuses. It threatens to become the latest source of friction in the often tense relationship between the wartime allies.

The concern is over a steady stream of accounts from human rights groups that Pakistan’s security services have rounded up thousands of people over the past decade, mainly in Baluchistan, a vast and restive province far from the fight with the Taliban, and are holding them incommunicado without charges. Some American officials think that the Pakistanis have used the pretext of war to imprison members of the Baluch nationalist opposition that has fought for generations to separate from Pakistan. Some of the so-called disappeared are guerrillas; others are civilians.

“Hundreds of cases are pending in the courts and remain unresolved,” said the Congressionally mandated report that the State Department sent to Capitol Hill on Nov. 23. A Congressional official provided a copy of the eight-page, unclassified document to The New York Times.

Separately, the report also described concerns that the Pakistani military had killed unarmed members of the Taliban, rather than put them on trial.

Boxer likened the U.S.A. to the Communist regime in North Korea, the Islamic regime in Iran and the Pakistani government at a press conference in which she called for repealing the ban on homosexuals in the military during the lameduck session of Congress, which is taking place now before the new members elected on Nov. 2 can arrive in Washington, D.C. and replace the members who are retiring or who were defeated.

“We now stand with this rule with countries like Iran, North Korea and Pakistan in banning gays and lesbians from military service,” said Boxer. “Our brave young men and women fight alongside allies like Australia, the United Kingdom and others who allow gays and lesbians to serve openly. Let’s not stand with Pakistan and with North Korea and Iran.”

Barbara, honey, you seem to forget that being gay is a crime punishable by death in Iran and Pakistan. And just being a citizen of North Korea seems to be a crime punishable by death.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed Americans on Wednesday to donate money to flood relief efforts in Pakistan, saying she is leading by example and just made a $10 donation herself.

“I just texted a contribution myself, because we know from our own experience, particularly in Haiti, small donations can add up to make a big difference,” Clinton told reporters on Wednesday.

“Americans have always shown great generosity to people facing crises worldwide. So I urge Americans to join this effort and send some much needed help to the people of Pakistan.”

Clinton urged people to text the word “SWAT” to the number, 50555, and reply “yes” when asked to confirm, in order to make a $10 donation to help the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Sure, about 95% of every dollar we send to Pakistan goes straight to a budget line item called “Corruption”, but c’mon Madame Secretary of State, a little perspective is in order here. $10 isn’t much.

Maybe you could have thrown in a little fruit punch and a few leftover pieces of that $11,000 wedding cake you bought for Chelsea’s wedding.

That could have fed about 1,000,000 starving Pakistanis for a month.

The Associated Press reports on Pakistan’s preemptory perfidy:

Pakistan will monitor seven major websites, including Google and Yahoo, to block anti-Islamic links and content, an official said Friday. Seventeen lesser-known sites are being blocked outright for alleged blasphemous material.

The moves follow Pakistan’s temporary ban imposed on Facebook in May that drew both praise and condemnation in a country that has long struggled to figure out how strict a version of Islam it should follow.

Both the Facebook ban and the move announced Friday were in response to court orders. The sites to be monitored include those of Yahoo Inc., Google Inc. and its YouTube service, Amazon.com Inc. and MSN, Hotmail and Bing from Microsoft Corp., said Pakistan Telecommunication Authority spokesman Khurram Mehran.

“If any particular link with offensive content appears on these websites, the (link) shall be blocked immediately without disturbing the main website,” Mehran said.

Dozen of media persons have been subjected to the horrible torture by doctors in the presence of police at Jinnah Hospital here on Wednesday.

Tension began when media persons went to hospital to cover a demonstration staged by the relative of 60-year-old patient, who died due to alleged negligence of the doctor.

The doctors became annoyed when journalists asked them the reason for the death of patient while instead of answering the question, they started beating the media persons.

According to Geo correspondent Faisal Karim, media persons were invited for talks at the hospital’s conference room, where they were beaten again both by the doctors and police.

Faisal said he was also among the journalists, who were also severely beaten by the doctors-turned-rioters.

Rioting doctors? Thanks to ObamaCare, we’re only a couple steps away from that in the United States.

Much as we would like to follow the Pakistani doctors’ example and beat Keith Olberamm silly, we will refrain. We think he suffers far more pain when people laugh at him.

Pakistani Taliban militants vowed to fight a tough, protracted guerrilla war against the army on Tuesday as a suicide car-bomber killed up to 20 people in a northwestern town, police said.

Yup, insisting that the Pakistani Army go on the offensive in Wazirastan is having the opposite of the hoped for effect:

The militants have responded with intensified attacks in towns and cities since the offensive was launched, killing several hundred people.

In the latest attack, a suicide bomber in a car set off explosives… in the center of Charsadda, 20 km (12 miles) northeast of the city of Peshawar, killing up to 20 people and wounding at least 30, town police chief Riaz Khan said.”

Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq speaking of the offensive:

“They are capturing roads while our people are still operating in the forests and mountains.”

“We have started guerrilla war against the Pakistani army. We’ve carried out several actions against the army and inflicted heavy losses on them,” he said.

Obama had very good friends Pakistani friends and roommates in college and traveled to Pakistan where he learned to cook the native foods and came to appreciate the great Urdu poets.

It’s not surprising that the President’s personal narrative on the campaign trail didn’t include this item:

He had very good friends Pakistani friends and roommates in college and traveled to Pakistan where he learned to cook the native foods and came to appreciate the great Urdu poets.

We can only assume that story was buried along with his middle name until the campaign was over and it was safe to bring them again.

But the President made these interesting admissions during interview with Anwar Iqbal of Pakistan’s Dawn Media Group this weekend:

Iqbal: Any plan to visit Pakistan in the near future?

Obama: I would love to visit. As you know, I had Pakistani roommates in college who were very close friends of mine. I went to visit them when I was still in college; was in Karachi and went to Hyderabad. Their mothers taught me to cook.
Iqbal: What can you cook?
Obama: Oh, keema…daal…You name it, I can cook it. And so I have a great affinity for Pakistani culture and the great Urdu poets.
Iqbal: You read Urdu poetry?
Obama: Absolutely. So my hope is that I’m going to have an opportunity at some point to visit Pakistan.

Voice of America puts Taliban on the air in Pakistan

This story isn’t from Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, but we wouldn’t blame you for thinking it might be: The Voice of America in Pakistan is giving air time to the Taliban.

Rep. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, went nuts when he learned that the American taxpayer-funded service has been interviewing Pakistani Taliban leaders.

“The U.S. taxpayer should not be subsidizing free air-time for al-Qaeda terrorists and Taliban leaders,” Kirk said. “These broadcasts put the lives of American soldiers in danger and undermine the policies of the United States in Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

“Pshaw,” said VOA Director Danforth Austin. He said the VOA was simply seeking to increase it’s credibility.

That’s all well and good, but it turns out that the Taliban used the VOA interviews as part of its military strategy. They gave out false information in an attempt to lure the Pakistani army into a trap.

There’s one very valuable lesson to be learned from this story: Never expect brilliance from a guy named Danforth.

Another story the media just conveniently overlooks in its efforts to be politically correct:

Those darn moderate Taliban factions with whom President Obama wants to negotiate are already causing problems in Pakistan.

Here’s how the ANI news agency reports the story:

Pakistani’s Taliban will not lay down heir arms in a northwestern valley as part of a deal that included the introduction of Sharia law but will take their struggle’ to new areas, a militant spokesman said today.

“Sharia doesn’t permit us to lay down arms,” Muslim Khan said by telephone. “If a government, either in Pakistan or Afghanistan, continues anti-Muslim policies, it’s out of the question that Taliban lay down their arms.”

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, under pressure from conservatives, signed a regulation on Monday imposing sharia law in the Swat valley to end Taliban violence.

The strategy of appeasement has alarmed US officials, while critics say the government has demonstrated a lack of capacity nd will to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda.

According to Dawn, details of the deal have not been made public but government officials backing the pact have said part of it as that militants would give up their arms.

But a Pakistani Taliban spokesman in the scenic valley, a one-time tourist destination 125 km northwest of Islamabad, said they would be keeping their guns.

He said “When we achieve our goal at one place, there are other areas where we need to struggle for it.”

Based on this, we can foresee the day when American Muslims can have guns for religious reasons, but other Americans can’t have them for legal reasons.

That, of course, will allow the IslamoFascists to help Homeland Security hunt down rightwing extremists.

Why isn’t this story the headline on every newspaper? Why isn’t it leading off every newscast? Why is it not even considered newsworthy?

According to local Pakistani police, Taliban militants beheaded an Afghan citizen after accusing him of spying for the United States. The man was kidnapped a week ago and his body was discovered Thursday in North Waziristan.

“He was slaughtered overnight. His headless body was put on the roadside,” police official Munir Khan said.

A note found on the man’s body said “Whoever spies for the US will face the same fate. This is a gift to (US President Barack) Obama.”

“See how much the world loves us,” an Obama spokesman somewhere likely said. “They’re already giving us gifts.”
