Her daughter has friends in Istanbul, she spends a couple of weeks at a time there.

Istanbul is a reasonably shitty name, which I believe means something like “the city”. Probably because the Turks had no idea how to actually build one to that scale

Almost right — “Istanbul” is just a corruption or nativized pronunciation of “Constantinople.” “Constantin-” became Istan-, and “-ople”, -bul.
The ople/bul does mean city, the original meaning City of Constantine. So not a shitty name, just shitty pronunciation and treatment of the original culture and inhabitants.

Alexander the Great left his name all over the place too, and in some places, including, I believe, Afghanistan, is remembered as Iskander, or some slight variations on that.

Ah interesting.. i thought it was Turk bastardization of the Greek word for “the city” or “at the city” or something along those lines.. Because the surrounding denizens often dropped Constantine’s name and just referred to it that way (much like anyone within 50 miles of NYC does)

This is horrible! This is a terrible country. I feel bad for these people.

I found this today and I didn’t know where to put it so I searched for an Iran story which I was sure there were a lot and found this one. This is really terrible. This is the story it is about mutant rats in iran… I actually have no idea if it is real
