Lincoln Chafee used to be a United States Senator from Rhode Island. Now he’s the state’s Governor. That’s a pity, because it means he can only impose his dictatorial edicts on one state instead of fifty-seven.
The Providence Journal has the details:
Chafee doesn’t plan to spend his own time on talk radio, and he intends to ban state employees from spending their state work time talking on talk radio, which was Carcieri’s favorite medium and an integral part of his communications operation.
Spokesman Michael Trainor said a directive will go out over the next day or so that reflects that new policy.
He said the policy emanates from a belief that talk radio is essentially “ratings-driven, for-profit programming,” and “we don’t think it is appropriate to use taxpayer resources” in the form of state employee work time to “support for-profit, ratings-driven programming.”
Trainor said the new governor will continue to talk to the news reporters for the local radio stations, and the nonprofit local NPR affiliate.
Yes, of course. The Governor will continue speaking to radio stations despite the fact that he’s also a state employee.
No surprise here. This ban is just more of the “Good for thee, but not for me” philosophy that made Chafee one of the Senate’s primary RINOs.
And the fact that the man thinks it’s inappropriate for the state to contribute to “for-profit” programming, but perfectly dandy to contribute to the taxpayer-supported “nonprofit NPR affiliate,” tell us that Lincoln Chafee has a future that’s much bigger than the mere governorship of a small state like Rhode Island.
Why, with that kind of philosophy and a little hard work he could he could one day find himself the governor of California.
