Obama wants women in combat infantry units… but after opening the Marine Corps’ three-month-long Infantry Officer Course to women, only two volunteered. One dropped out the first day, the other two weeks later. No women volunteered for the next one, which starts in January. Poll question: will liberals respond by admitting it was a bad idea or will they lower standards so women can graduate?

I could never be in any area of the military I applaud anyone anywhere that does it. There are things that woman cannot do and things that men cannot do and things that both do well and things that one does a little better than the other. It is what it is. People just need to calm down. Let’s stop this equalizing movement crap. We don’t have the expertise, nor the perfection nor the all encompassing knowledge to truly equalize everything and everyone. Stop the madness it is time to let it go.

Just heard on the radio that the ACLU (of course) is helping 4 service women sue the DoD over the ban. Having had female friends who have gone on patrol as part of the marine female contingent who congress mandates must make it back to a base-camp one night out of every 6 weeks so that congress gets a touchy-feely that these women are “technically” out of combat, and to hear the four women tell their stories… Like flashingscotsman said. it shouldn’t be an out and out ban, but if a woman cannot physically hack it, don’t put the lives of the rest of the unit on the line just to make some left-wing arm-chair general happy that everything is PC. people need to stop using the military as a social engineering experiment.

It annoyed me to no end when the military began becoming PC.
They started spending more time with Social Actions briefings than CPR classes. Seriously, what is more important, saving lives, or stopping the telling of dirty jokes?

Actually, there could be one strategic group of women that could be combat ready.
PMS or menopausal women can be pretty fierce and ruthless. I know from experience.

Yeah, I could see how a sergeant could rouse the killer instinct in them.

First women to be put into combat? Sandra Fluke…the enemy would be so worn out not one shot would be fired and like France, they would surrender in hours.

I read a book, one of my faves, “Crossed-Currents: The story of Women in the Navy from WWI to TailHook”. One of the parts I remember most is during WWII, when the WAVES were first established so that more men could go to sea. Two WAVES show up at a warehouse where pissed-off male Sailors look at them and say, “get all this heavy equipment put away before we come back from lunch.” Convinced there was no way these two women could do it they went to lunch. Two hours later, they are struggling to pick their jaws up off the ground. Through using their brains and setting up a series of pullies, these “little” ladies put away all the heavy equipment way faster than they themselves could or would.
I relay this anecdote because, as a woman in the military, I recognize we women have vital roles to play in the defense of our great country. And we do offer important diversity and problem solving resources. However, I also recognize there is no way most of us have what it takes to be a Navy SEAL. My scrawny-ass sure doesn’t. A few do, but most do not.

JPTravis
Member

What in the world is a “diversity resource?” My God, please tell me you didn’t drink the Kool-Aid over Thanksgiving.

In my mind I have this image of the Battle of Midway, the fate of the free world in the balance, bombs and torpedos exploding everywhere, and the captain of a warship shouting, “Engine room! Engine room! We need more diversity resources on the bridge!”

To which Scotty replies, “Captain, the women have used all the dilitheum crystal on the dinner table!”

StrinaM
Member

All I was trying to say that women are a vital part of many places in society, but COMBAT isn’t one of those places. I was also trying to say that women come to the table with different ways of looking at problems, because many times we have to rely on brains over muscle.

I was reading comments on the linked article and a Marine officer said the same thing. I’m not a Marine so I had no idea you could be an officer without being an infantry officer but I’m guessing there’s a bit of history behind it dating back to the days when Marines primarily served a Naval function.

I know the feeling A1Percent. When you hear that higher pitched voice come across the radio saying they are responding, you start thinking dear God let me get this whole thing under control before they arrive and escalate the situation.

Some here have the desire to show that they have “balls” and can deal with anything only to leave their partners in a no win situation. Then its always fun talking with the Monday Morning Quarterbacks, who are just “following up” on the matter. I don’t know which is worse, those looking to prove their toughness or those that are looking to jam all of us?

The part I am on the fence about is what happens to Women Marines when they get captured? I don’t even want to think of how these countries that don’t honor the Geneva Convention, like in the Middle East, would treat a Woman Marine captive POW.

At Marine Corps Recruit Depot Paris Island, there are four training battalions. The fourth is female recruits. A platoon starts with 80 recruits and very quickly starts loosing those who quit and drop out. My platoon of males started 80 and graduated 50. The female platoon that accompanied mine to church graduated just 18 out of 80. I have a lot of respect for the females that graduate because they don’t get short changed on training and earned it.

JPTravis
Member

BUT, however you feel about their efforts, the reason they are in a separate training group is because the requirements have been lowered for female recruits. How do you feel about that?

Not exactly JP, they are in a seperate training group because the training group all sleep in the same barracks.
You wouldn’t want the women sleeping with the men in boot.

I’m not sure, I am on the fence about it because there are a lot of positives to having them around. Nice to look at and all among other things. The general consensus among males is we like to have them around until it comes down to promotion time and the females get promoted first for some reason and don’t deploy. They either come up pregnant or tasked to a nondeployable unit or sent on some detail.

I can say that the requirements for basic were the same except for pullups. When you are a Marine you can count on going to battle with capable and qualified Marines and Corpsmen that have all been through the same training by your side. Marines don’t play and that includes the females. I would go into battle very comfortably with female Marines by my side. By the way they are called WMs, I have been saying it wrong. Women Marines. Women Marines have already been fighting in the wars anyway. As far as could be they be infantry, I would say, yes having worked with them before.

“I can say that the requirements for basic were the same except for pullups.”

No, I just read a list of the reduced requirements, and there was more on the list than pullups. There is a running requirement for instance – the women can take longer to run 5k than men… oh wait, maybe I was looking at a list of officer requirements. Never mind.

Hey I’m all for equal opportunities . . . but if can’t meet the minimum standard then you are a liability. And in this sort of situation that means more lives lost.

Leaving the standards high IS equal opportunity. Everyone has the opportunity to try. If they fail, they don’t get to do that particular job. Equal outcome was never promised.

They’ll never admit it was a bad idea. The requirements are to strict is what they will say. Which is bull shit. When you are in the middle of the shit with bullets whistleing by your head and the dust flying up from the rounds coming in just short, you want a person in charge who can think rationally and not emotionally.

Just another weakening pussification of our military. barry is talking about reducing the navy back to 1918 levels. With the Chinesse having launched their 1st aircraft carrier and landed a Mig upon it, that’s just what he needs to do. Cut our Navy back to almost 100 year ago level.

They didn’t just land a plane on it, they landed a plane on it that is better than any fighter we own except the F-22 Raptor… which Obama cancelled almost as soon as he became president in 2009.

When I was a youngster, I saw 2 well known acts in a showcase club in Asbury Park NJ. The place was called the Hotel California at that time, and I saw of all people, Joan Jett one weekend, and Pat Benatar another! Those 2 concerts in a club atmosphere were too much to believe!
BTW, a few weeks ago, I saw Loverboy, Pat Benatar, and Journey in Tampa at the Ask Gary Ampitheatre. Pat still belts out a tune like it was 35 years ago, and Journey has a new singer that sounds like Steve Perry, and he’s Philipino!

I lived in the USSR for two+months in the early 1980s. Soviet women were not hot. There were some good looking girls (18 to say mid 20s) but by 30 it was over for them. The strain and misery of life under that system took a toll as did the significant vodka consumption. In an effort to not sound completely sexist, the Soviet men took a beating as they aged too. They were equally miserable.

Sure, but what women lack in size, strength and aggressiveness is certainly made up for by having the advantage of “diversity” on our side.

Besides, hot women can beat up much larger and stronger men any time with their advanced martial arts skills. I’ve seen it in the movies.
