Wait a second! That’s $1.7 billion in cost overruns. The final tab is projected to be $8 billion for the 119 mile Central Valley portion (according to LA Times and the California High-Speed Rail Authority, you can trust them!).

I ran the math, 119 miles for just over $67 million per mile. How in the hell can you spend 67 million bucks on a mile of railroad track? Are land prices in the Central Valley that expensive?

BNSF added 16 miles of rail for a third track through Cajon Pass into the Los Angeles Basin for $90 million ($5.6m / mile). The company spent $80 million to double track 4.5 miles of Abo Canyon, a very difficult project at $17.7m per mile.

For about $119 bucks we could have bought Ass Clown Jerry Brown a train set for Christmas, and he could sit down with Gavin (Screwing everyone else’s wife) Newsom and played trains all he wants.

And that 119 miles of track is not exactly ‘locomotive ready’; it will require billions and billions more dollars before it is.

And THEN they have to maintain it!

Here’s a quick video I shot of the construction last summer. I’ll shoot updates next time I go to Fresno.
