Attack of the tax man: Top rate to hit 57% in New York

A massive health-care overhaul could have a job-killing effect on New York, creating a tax rate of nearly 60 percent for the state’s top earners and possibly pressuring small-business owners to shed workers.

No matter what President Obama may say, almost no one still believes taxes will only increase on those earning more than $250,000. Especially the New York Post:

Congressional plans to fund a massive health-care overhaul could have a job-killing effect on New York, creating a tax rate of nearly 60 percent for the state’s top earners and possibly pressuring small-business owners to shed workers.

New York’s top income bracket could reach as high as 57 percent — rates not seen in three decades — to pay for the massive health coverage proposed by House Democrats this week.

Three words: Trickle down taxes.

Obama’s New York “date” may have cost $400,000. Hope he got laid.

"Oh, Barack, is that the Washington Monument in your pocket or are you just happy to see me."
"Oh, Barack, is that the Washington Monument in your pocket or are you just happy to see me."

The self-proclaimed “most transparent administration in history” announced on Monday that it would release no information regarding the cost of President Obama’s “date” in New York. Just won’t do it.

The administration’s policy seems to be summed up in these nine words: “Love to talk more. Just no time. Gotta go.”

The New York Post guestimated that the trip cost $24,000. The London Daily Mail put the figure at $75,000. But the Washington Times did additional research and came up with a far higher number: $400,000.

Their figure includes three helicopters that shuttled the First Couple to and from Andrews Air Force Base and all the air and ground personnel associated with that move. It includes the corporate jets that flew the Obamas and the ones that flew decoy duty. It includes a previously unmentioned C-17 cargo jet that flew all the cars for the President’s motorcade to New York and back. It included hundreds of additional Washington, DC and NYC policemen. It included the vast crew of Secret Service people who had to check the New York locations out in advance and also be there during the date.

We’re not sure what happened to the Obamas at the end of the date, but we’re pretty sure the taxpayers got screwed.

Robert Gibbs sets world record for saying, “Uh.”

A reporter asks this simple question: “Can you tell us how much the President and First Lady’s ‘date night’ cost on Saturday night? And if not, why not?”

What follows is more than a minute of Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stuttering, stammering, and changing the subject.

Media downplays huge Hispanic protest against gay marriage

While the left demonized those damn white conservatives — evildoers like Miss California Carrie Prejean — as homophobes, a huge, mostly Hispanic crowd took to the streets of New York in opposition to Governor Patterson’s same-sex bill. The crowd, which some estimate at 20,000, gathered at the Governor’s Manhattan office, stretching from 35th to 40th Street on 3rd Avenue.

Welcome to the family, fellow right wing extremists.

Cannibalism: NY Times attacks LA Times over ads disguised as news

There's nothing more fun than watching the media devour themselves.
There's nothing more fun than watching the media devour themselves.
This may be a case of the pot calling the kettle black, but the truth-challenged New York Times has attacked the Los Angeles Times for disguising advertisements as news stories.

One day after catching holy hell for disguising a front age ad for a new TV show as a news story, the LA Times did it again.

An ad in Sunday’s Calendar entertainment section ran alongside a four-page ad for a new movie called “The Soloist.” The four pages are designed to look like a news.

A Paramount Pictures spokesperson said the Times approached them with the idea. The complete advertising package included an online contest and promos that ran on KTLA, which is a Times sister company.

“You dress an ad up to look like editorial content precisely because you think it will make it more valuable,” said Geneva Overholser of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication. “Fundamentally, that’s an act of deception.”

This is shocking. No, not the deception on the part of the Los Angeles Times. Everyone knows that. What’s shocking is that Overholser seems surprised by it.

TV reporter arrested after plowing into NYPD horse

Never trust a NYPD horse. They are notorious liars.
Never trust a NYPD horse. They are notorious liars.
The city’s bankrupt. Taxes are going through the roof. And Rush Limbaugh’s leaving town. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse comes this news:

A former New York City police detective who is now a TV news reporter for Fox affiliate WNYW was charged with DUI after his car crashed into a police horse on Monday night.

Police reported that 60-year-old Michael Sheehan refused a breathalyzer test which resulted in the automatic suspension of his license.

Thomas Monaghan, Sheehan’s attorney, said police had the story backwards and that the horse had actually slammed into Sheehan’s car and “not the other way around.”

Damn lying horses.

Media rushes to condemn gun ownership, ignores more interesting fact about Binghamton gunman

The left wants to know why it was so easy for Jiverly Wong to get guns. We want to know why it was so easy for him to get in the country.
The left wants to know why it was so easy for Jiverly Wong to get guns. We want to know why it was so easy for him to get in the country.

In the media’s rush to condemn gun ownership, they have conveniently overlooked something very interesting about the shooter.

You can find it in this story from Fox News:

(Jiverly) Wong first came to the northwestern New York town some time in the late 1980s or early 1990s, before moving to California, (Police Chief Joseph) Zikuski said. In 1992, Wong was arrested and convicted of fraud.

Police said Wong became an American citizen in November of 1995 and sometime after that left the country. He returned to Los Angeles Dec. 25, 1999, arriving from Tokyo, police said passport records showed.

What the hell is wrong with our immigration policy when a guy who was arrested and convicted of fraud in 1992 can become a citizen in 1995?

NY Times buries story that could have buried Obama

The New York Times is making headlines for ignoring news that could have damaged Barack Obama, who as you may have noticed, is a Democrat.

According to the Bulletin, “A lawyer involved with legal action against Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) told a House Judiciary subcommittee on March 19 The New York Times had killed a story in October that would have shown a close link between ACORN, Project Vote and the Obama campaign because it would have been a ‘a game changer.’”

An informant had been providing inside information to The Unofficial Democratic Mouthpiece about ACORN’s election activities and several stories had been written. The articles abruptly stopped when it was revealed that the Obama presidential campaign had sent its maxed-out donor list to ACORN’s Washington, D.C. office as a way to “reach out to the maxed-out donors and solicit donations from them for Get Out the Vote efforts to be run by ACORN.”

In what may have been a rare moment of candor, The Times reporter actually told the informant that editors wanted to kill the story because “it was a game changer.”’

Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) said the footsie-playing between Obama and ACORN could be a violation of federal election law.

The Times’ Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications, Catherine Mathis, stated in an email, “political considerations played no role in our decisions about how to cover this story or any other story about President Obama.”

Take that for what it’s worth. After all, it comes from the New York Times.

NY Times likes Taliban better than tobacco

Big tobacco bad, big Taliban good.
Big tobacco bad, big Taliban good.
It’s always amusing–in a sick sort of way–to see the New York Times put its prejudices on display.

On one hand, the Times doesn’t like Kirsten Gillibrand, New York’s new senator, because they fret that she may be a closet conservative. So the paper ran a front page story attacking her work as an attorney for Philip Morris back in 1996.

On the other hand, the Times has been conspicuously silent when it comes to Anthony Walker, President Obama’s nominee to head the Justice Department’s Civil Division. West defended John Walker Lindh, the American Taliban nabbed in Afghanistan after 9-11.

Our theory is that the Times is upset at the difference in results the two attorneys produced.

“The industry beat back the federal perjury investigation,” the Times said about the tobacco litigation, “a significant legal victory at the time, but not one that Ms. Gillibrand is eager to discuss.”

Lindh, on the other hand, was sent to the Big House for 20 years.

Looks like John Walker Lindh hired the wrong lawyer. And so did President Obama. Lindh might want to start smoking and hire Gillibrand for his appeal.

Blind governor smells taxes up the wazoo

david patersonIt is apparently true that those who lose one sense find their remaining senses enhanced. Blind New York Governor David Patterson, for example, can sniff out a new taxes like a sow rooting up a truffle.

Just read these brief news stories about two new taxes recently proposed by wily New York Democrats:

Stripper Tax Is Hard to ‘Bare’

A Brooklyn assemblyman introduced a bill yesterday that would require patrons to pay the state $10 every time they visit a strip club or topless joint.

Felix Ortiz, a Democrat, said the flesh fee could raise as much as $500 million for victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse and child prostitution.

Source: New York Post

Now combine the story above with the one below and you begin to see how invasive the Democrats’ tax plans can be.

Governor To Bury Plan That Would Mandate Taxes On Dozens Of Recreational Items

With his approval rating plummeting by the day and thousands of angry New Yorkers urging him to find other ways to raise state revenue, Gov. David Paterson has decided to put a cork in his plan to impose dozens of “nuisance” taxes on recreational items…

Paterson had planned to mandate a sales tax on numerous items…Paterson was also going to eliminate the no-tax rule on clothing under $110, but will nix that idea, too.

So there you have it. On one hand, New York Democrats want to tax strippers. On the other hand, they want to tax clothes. Which means they will tax the shirt right off your back. And the shirt right on your back.

Hollywood teaches New York a lesson on taxes

Why don’t liberals understand that changes in tax policy also cause changes in people’s behavior?

Connecticut, which offers the nation’s heftiest tax incentives, is nearing agreement to bring the production of three syndicated TV shows to the state. “The Steve Wilkos Show” and “The Jerry Springer Show,” which are currently based in Chicago, and “Maury,” which is now produced in New York, are the shows that may make the move.

This is causing panic among other New York productions. Michael Imperioli, Harvey Keitel, and Jason O’Mara stars of TV’s “Life On Mars,” recently joined labor leaders to beg Empire State legislators to extend the state’s TV production tax credits.

No kidding? You mean Hollywood power players would actually abandon New York just to lower their tax burdens by moving production to Connecticut?

The problem with government, to use an old farm analogy, is that it always thinks it can increase milk production by increasing number of milkers instead of increasing the number of cows.
