Newt Gingrich discovers the one thing politicians can’t overcome: ridicule
Actor John Lithgow joins Colbert to give a dramatic, verbatim reading of the Gingrich memo. It sounds like The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
Politicians can overcome scandal, but they can’t overcome ridicule. Think Dukakis in the tank or John Kerry in the clean suit. Once the public starts laughing at a politician instead of with him, it’s curtains.
Which brings us to the case of Newt Gingrich. As has been reported EVERYWHERE, Newt criticized Paul Ryan’s budget plan as right wing social engineering. All hell broke loose and after making feeble excuse after feeble excuse, Newt tried a new tactic – a press release condemning his accusers.
Unfortunately, the press release itself became an object of ridicule because it was so over the top, so floridly written.
We’ve never been fans of Stephen Colbert and Comedy Central’s Colbert Report. We just don’t find his schtick particularly amusing. That being said, this video is hilarious. Absolutely hilarious.

Funny thing about that “nonpartisan” rally Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert held on Saturday. It was oddly partisan. 86% identified themselves as Democrats, but only 1% of those in attendance identify themselves as Republican.

That is, of course, the kind of nonpartisanship found typically at nonpartisan places like MSNBC.

A straw poll conducted on attendees at the rally hosted by comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on the National Mall Saturday found an overwhelming majority of Democratic voters, but sapped enthusiasm as compared to 2008.
According to the poll conducted by Lake Research Partners & Revolution Messaging at the “Rally to Restore Sanity,” 86 percent of participants surveyed said they planned to vote Democratic this week, with eight percent undecided and just one percent voting Republican.
Only one in four surveyed said they more excited about this election than 2008. Thirty-nine percent said their enthusiasm had diminished.
A full 90 percent of rally attendees approved of President Obama, with 56 percent approving of him strongly. Only 10 percent disapproved of the president, just 2 percent strongly.
They must be exhausted from all that reaching across the aisle.

Steny Hoyer: Stephen Colbert’s testimony was inappropriate
We’re not sure if Hoyer is unable to criticize Democrats for this stupid stunt or if he is simply so inarticulate that he is unable to clearly express that criticism. Nah, who are we kidding? It’s both. And Hoyer should be embarrassed about his performance on Fox News.
Chris Wallace interviewed Democrat Steny Hoyer and asked him about Steven Colbert’s testimony before the House last week. It was an exercise in futility for Wallace.
Wallace: Was this an embarrassment for the House?
Hoyer: I think his testimony was not appropriate. No, I think it was an embarrassment for Mr. Colbert, more than the House…
Wallace: He was called by the Democratic chair of the subcommittee.
Hoyer: You asked me if, Chris, if the testimony was appropriate. I think it was not appropriate.
Wallace: And he should not have been called.
Hoyer: Well, I don’t know if whether he was called, but I think what he had to say was not the way it should have been said. If he had a position on the issues, he should have given those issues and I think, you asked my personal opinion…

Tea Party coverage leads to surge in Fox ratings
Everyone’s ratings were up on the night of the Tea Parties, but the ratings at Fox were in the stratosphere. They can’t even see MSNBC in their rear view mirror anymore.
The Comedy Network’s Daily Show and Colbert climbed into the top ten at the expense of MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and CNN’S Larry King.
The ratings for Ed Schultz’ EdShow were so abysmal that MSNBC may rename it “Weekday at Bernie’s.” And all that talk about “teabagging” caused Anderson Cooper to suck. Or maybe we should have said his ratings sucked. Yeah, that’s what we should have said.

32% of younger Americans get their news from satirical sources. No joke.
More and more Americans are getting their news from satirical sources. This is the best news we’ve ever heard.
Here’s how Rasumussen Reports reports their report:
Nearly one-third of Americans under the age of 40 say satirical news-oriented television programs like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are taking the place of traditional news outlets.
Thirty-two percent (32%) of adults ages 30-39 believe this to be true, while 42% disagree, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
Thirty percent (30%) of those ages 18-29 say programs like the two Comedy Central shows that feature news reports with a comic twist are replacing traditional news outlets, but 35% disagree and another 35% are not sure.
The only problem these days is trying to figure out if you’re watching news that’s news, news that’s satire, satire that’s news, or satire that’s satire.
It’s a complex world we live in.

So Barack Obama’s in a boat with Tom Daschle and Tim Geithner…
OK, so maybe that wasn’t the joke, but after two long years the late night comedians have finally discovered comedy gold in Barack Obama. At least one of them has.
On Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart devoted an entire monologue to jokes about Barack Obama. Joke after joke after joke.
Believe it or not, Jay Leno also cracked his first Obama joke. That puts him one ahead of David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson and Steven Colbert.
Obama jokes have been non-existent on late night TV. The man was considered untouchable. In part because the late night hosts agree with his leftwing policies. In part because they feared accusations of racism.
If these guys want really big laughs, we suggest just walk out on stage, look at the audience and say, “Joe Biden.”
We started laughing as we typed it.
