Think Progress: We could end homelessness with the money Americans spend on Christmas decorations. “…the Grinches at TP want to guilt-trip Americans this holiday season by insinuating that Christmas decorations are the cause of homelessness.” Two can play that game: if not buying Christmas decorations could end homelessness, think of the good the money we spend on lousy dead-tree newspapers, donations to the DNC and union dues could do.

We could end homelessness with the money we spend on Sandra Flukes contraceptives, but Think Progress has nothing to say about that.

You can’t really expect an intelligent argument from liberals, right? It’s what Eisenhower use to call “exquisite nonsense”. Sounds good at first but then a few seconds later you realize it is just drivel.

December 13, 2012 5:56 pm

Think Progress’ real agenda is to get rid of Christmas.

December 13, 2012 6:03 pm

True. Liberals think that if they can get rid of God and (real) science…enlightened thinking, then they will have their utopia. I recommend reading the “Kindergarten of Eden” by Evan Sayet. He does a nice job explaining this phenomenon.

The homeless will not let us defeat homelessness.

Remember the guy that the cop bought boots for? That guy has an apartment completely paid for. He wasn’t in it. He was sitting on the cold sidewalk because he’s mentally f***ed up, either with drugs or mental illness.

No one will ever end homelessness because the homeless are crazy – by nature or by choice.

Jesus said:
the poor are with you always…

it’s up to us to answer, imo, via exegesis, why?

we can only force feed the malnourished for so long, if……… well, it’s that old time religion and it’s good enough for me.

“No one will ever end homelessness because the homeless are crazy – by nature or by choice.”
I agree 100%. Just one, of many examples. One of my best friends 18 yo son, a druggie, was “homeless” in a large city. His dad was horrified that the kid was living this way and tracked him down. The kid said that he was not going home with dad and that he wanted to be left alone. He said, “We” meaning he and his fellow ‘homeless’ lived that way because they “want(ed) to.” Also made some snide comments about “do gooders” being a “pain in the ass.”
My friend was astounded. A few years later the kid got clean and seems to live a normal life, although since he dropped out of high school he has pretty menial jobs but he is not sucking on the public teat.

“The homeless will not let us defeat homelessness.” And there my friend, is the truth. Just as we can’t end poverty, and we can’t stop children from being hungry. If we pay for a home, the slumlords will raise the rent. If we provide money to buy food, the crack-hos or the meth-hos will use the food money to buy their drugs. We have given these people the opportunity for education and a path to get free of poverty. If they choose to bypass those benefits, what else are we supposed to do?

It’s also true of why we can’t end drug/substance abuse. Meth explains is perfectly- if they can’t get “natural” drugs, they will mix cough medicine, propane and whatever other poison they can to get a buzz. Or sniff glue, Or smoke banana peels. Whatever it takes.

Humans have free will. And some people make bad choices with that free will. Fellow humans should only get involved when there is a danger to the individual or society.

December 14, 2012 4:53 am

Pure truth. Both from an economic and psychological POV.

December 14, 2012 6:52 am

RKae, there was a study done of homeless veterans.
The results showed that not only did they want to be left alone, and remain homeless, there were a high percentage with mental illness or drug and alcohol addiction.
There are thousands of empty beds in shelters that were made for homeless veterans. They sinply refuse to be helped.
It’s not just veterans that are like this, but they were the only ones targeted in this study.

December 17, 2012 8:28 am

True in some cases. Buit certainly not always. I have been homeless and I’m college educated and not THAT f’d up. Many homeless are families and the breadwinner was either laid off or fir. . .excuse me downsized, and they can’t pay their rent/mortgage anymore. Once you are homeless, the ability to GET another job is that much more difficult. Certainly there are lots of homeless, particularly homeless vets, who are mentally ill, on drugs or alcohol. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

re: “Think Progress: We could end homelessness with the money Americans spend on Christmas decorations.”

A better idea: We could end the Liberal Progressive movement in this country if we bought hemp rope instead of Christmas decorations – and hung every low-life cockroach Christmas hating anti-American liberal from a stout tree branch or lamp post!

We could end homelessness, world hunger, and cure cancer with the money we totally piss away on the Useless Nations. If someone can point out someplace where we get 10 cents worth of value out of the billions we annually pour into that cluster f*ck, I’ll modify my position somewhat.
Not even to mention the enormous amounts of taxpayer money we pour into countries that are trying to destroy us. I know the plan is that by us pouring money into them will make them love us. How is that working out?

December 13, 2012 8:23 pm

The UN is a money pit where corrupt 3 world dictators get to wrench the gears of what makes the world actually work by scapegoating those who have figured it out in the name of those who never have.

BTW, I own this shirt…

I’m wondering where these idiots think the money spent of the decorations goes. Yeah, a bunch of it heads over to China, but lots of it is sent to American manufacturers, tree growers, and decorators.

So if you take the money you spend on Christmas decorations and give it to people who don’t want to work you put the honest workers out of a job and the lazies in their houses.

December 13, 2012 9:16 pm

no no no no no no no no no oh

December 13, 2012 8:52 pm

Homelessness, poverty, hunger and other things cannot be ended. As long as people are willing to be evil, things will happen. As long as people are crazy things will happen (most homeless people are insane and do not know nor care to be confined in a home). As long as people take drugs people will be irresponsible, etc you get the drift. No one to stop something from happening that in many cases is due to the person’s actions. Those that truly want help in a country like ours will get it, unfortunately many other countries do not have the safety net that this country has. I don’t mind temporary safety nets for people that truly needs it.

We found that the homeless man that took the shoes from the cop in NY City has a tax paid home that is now sitting empty perhaps because he prefers to be in the streets.

Throwing money at the problem many times is the biggest problem of all.

Not so silent
December 13, 2012 10:16 pm

It should be called “Think Stupid”. More appropriate name. Hey if you don’t like Christmas, don’t celebrate it, pole dance, or decorate your house for the moon god festival, I really don’t give a shit, but I would like to tell “Think Stupid” I have spent decades dealing with the homeless. The majority are that way by choice, drugs, alcohol, mental illness are a big part of it, some are just plain lazy and make more money begging by a freeway offramp that I make in a year and theirs is tax free, plus free healthcare, foodstamps and all the other shit, and now the liberal morons in Kalifornia are going to give these freeloaders a free phone. What the hell do they need a phone for? To order Pizza? And yes there are honest to god people who are homeless through misfortune, but the majority, that’s what they want. So don’t expect me to give up Christmas, or the celebration of the birth of Christ for some alcoholic/heroin/meth/crack head who has neither the will power or brains to stop living in the gutter. For years I went out of my way to help these folks, you offer to buy… Read more »

I’m confused , I thought the issue of homelessness was ONLY an issue during a Republican administration . Homelessness disappeared during Clinton’s term , but magically reappeared during Bush’s term .

Me think Think Progress doesn’t understand how the program works.

December 14, 2012 6:24 am

The consumerism that Christmas has become is just more efforts by Corporate Greed anyway.

December 14, 2012 6:42 am

You do realize that the buisiness of America is buisiness?

It is was the freedom that allowed capitalism that propelled this nation further & faster then any in human history, & there are way too many worthless people WITHIN this counrty who are ore then happy to collaspe the system in the name of “fairness & justice”. Those people are too ignorant to understand that, & they don’t deserve America. They don’t contribute, they don’t make things better, & they never have. But they are allowed to vote for people who allow them to do nothing & suck off of the system. They are ZERO LIABILITY VOTERS, they suck, they are useless, they are worthless, & they are winning. They are succeeding at destroying the ability of America to be the greatest nation in the history of the world. It is people like you crowley, that are turning this planet into a worthless rock of sh!t, but you’re too dumb to notice.

“Your Christmas wreath is forcing a poor person to live in a cardboard box.”
“Your Disney World vacation is forcing a homeless person to sleep under a bridge.”
“Your new 47″ HDTV is forcing an elderly person to eat dog food.”

Whatever the season, whatever the reason, it’s your fault people are poor.
It’s just another liberal guilt trip, something to make you feel bad about the Christmas Holidays.

December 14, 2012 8:41 am

I’m going to prove I love my fellow man after reading this nonsense. I have a tree in the back yard I have not decorated so I’m going to buy another hundred feet of Christmas lights to string around and over it.

December 14, 2012 9:38 am

When I see “homeless” people begging for money on the corner, and smoking, I figure they have more money than I do.

December 14, 2012 10:23 am

Yea, and like my grandma used to tell me “If a frog had wings, he would not bump his ass hoppin’.”

Back in the day when some do-gooder dcecided it was cruel to keep the mentally ill in institutions and ensure they received the care they could not provide for themselves, the hoeless rate vastly increased in numbers. I grant you, the mentally ill have been truly and horribly abused in the past, but people have gone overboard in trying to correct that. A mentally ill person can decide if they can be institutionalized, they can choosed if they will take their medication (even if they are currently off meds and are seriously unable to complete a logical thought) can choose to live on the streets and NO ONE can do anything about it. The mentally ill have more “rights” that the average person. AThe fact that the severely mentally ill are not able to make reasonable decisions about their health and care, they run the program. The only reason they can be compelled to be in a facility is a short term court order if the are determined to be a danger to themsleves or others, or if the are compelled due to legal issues. And even those who ARE in a facility cannot be compelled to take their medicine,… Read more »

And the libs continue to claim that Reagan cut the funding and turned the nuts loose.

December 18, 2012 8:12 am

Not true. The ability to be “free” and “equal” and to be independant driven by the handicapped, lapped over to incude the mentally ill, who generally up to the 60’s were merely warehoused in huge state facilities with minimal finding, minimal staff (and untrained staff to boot) and literally left to rot there. The unintended consequence of closing these intitutions was that all the supposed outpatient clinics, Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse specialists, even social workers and counselors were defunded again and again, until there was basically nowhere for the mentally ill to go, no one monitoring them to ensure they were caring for themselves, taking their meds, or for that matter taking the RIGHT meds. Most mentally ill now end up in prison, where they receive no care at all. Mental illness receives probably the least funding if any group in the United States. The don’t generally vote, one cannot make money off them, and in fact they cost money. Bad combination when it comes to funding.
