America’s top ten local talk show hosts: #8 – Doug McIntyre/New York & Los Angeles

by editor on July 20, 2011

Doug McIntyre
KABC/Los Angeles (and 25 other stations around the country)
Monday–Friday Midnight–3 am

We continue our Top 10 Countdown with #8 today.

Doug McIntyre called his show Red Eye Radio long before Greg Gutfeld created his Red Eye TV show for Fox News. In fact, Gutfeld should probably pay McIntyre residuals for use of the name.

Doug is nationally syndicated, but we bent the rules a little to include him on this list for a three reasons. First,he’s only in 26 markets and once you get past New York and Los Angeles you haven’t heard of most of them (places like Searcy, Arkansas, Show Lo, Arizona and Wahpeton, North Dakota). Second, we owe Doug a favor because he interviewed the Editor and the Administrator on his former Los Angeles morning show when we were just starting IHTM. Consider yourself paid, Doug. And third, he’s a great freakin’ talent who wold be a lot higher on this list if we weren’t cheating to have him on it at all.

Ken Levine, writer/producer/director of shows like MASH, Cheers, Frasier and too many others to mention and a former radio guy said, “Red Eye Radio is the best syndicated all-night show. The man can talk on any subject. He’s a cross between a 5-time Jeopardy champion and Jean Shepherd.” Another top talk show host told us, “He’s the smartest guy on radio.”

Here’s a whole hour of Redeye Radio from just a few days ago:

Don’t know the guy and can’t make any judgements, but MGAP, by your description, he’s too middle of the road for me. I don’t need me no pale pastels. I need someone who will make clear distinctions between right and left and right and wrong! I need someone who is partisan, if that makes sense!

I hear ya. He’s definitely right of center. Just doesn’t come off as fanatical about it. Kind of hard to describe. Maybe a Dennis Prager without the jewish spin on everything? Definitely partisan, someone on the left could accidently tune in and it might take them a few minutes to realize they were being talked bad about! Those few minutes of sane logic might be enough to get a left leaning fence sitter to listen longer and come over to the dark side. 😉

I disagree, I believe we’re the good guys and they have to come over to the “Right is Light” side. (chuckle)

It’s the dark side to them!

I work odd hours and listen to this guy on the way home at night. He is a very competent guy and I agree that he needs to be on this list. He leans a bit further towards the center than a lot of talk radio guys and I find that refreshing. He’ll shut down an ill-informed right wing caller just as fast as he’d shut down an ill-informed left wing caller. He’s not as much doom and gloom as a lot of the talk radio guys are these days. He’s able to present the shit state we are in with a point of view that is a little less depressing, if that makes sense!
