Barbi twins: Obama abandoned the horses. “Congress approved the Conference Committee report on spending bill H2112 for Thanksgiving, giving funding to USDA for horse meat inspections and lifted the 6 year slaughter ban. More than 70% of Americans don’t want slaughter houses here. While Obama was pardoning a turkey, he abandoned our horses.” Too bad he won’t abandon his presidency.

Not one of the Barbi twins…

WHY HORSE SLAUGHTER IS NECSSARY. Currently horses are being abandoned, starved, etc. at alarming rates. With no slaughter allowed those people who can no longer take care of their horses turn them loose on public lands to certain, horrible deaths or just starve them on their own properties. Horses that do make it to sale barns are shipped to Mexico and Canada. Those shipping methods are terrifying to horses and many die on the way. The subject is difficult for us in the industry. I believe we need controlled humane slaughter based in the USA. Educate yourselves, get the facts then decide. Here is a thoughtful article: http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/01/why-horse-slaughter-is-necessary/

Brother in law had a neighbor that had too many horses, couldn’t afford to feed them, didn’t have the nerve to ship them out. They just starved until the cops started prosecuting for cruelty.

In a more just world, people would buy no more horse than they could afford — but in that same world, the phrase “it seemed like a good idea at the time” will also never be said. It is a sad problem, and while I’d rather not have horses wantonly butchered, it isn’t like this is My Little Pony Factory, with rainbows and stars & shit. Sometimes the best thing you can do for an animal is find it a good home — and if you can’t find it a good home, and can’t afford it, then maybe the PETA people can keep it.

Reminds me of all those wonderful “no kill” animal shelters. The ones where I live, while they are a sop to the sensibilities of people that got more pets than they could afford, are just a hotbed of diseases. The kill shelters (other than the PETA ones*) do a good job of finding healthy pets homes, and put the sick ones down right away, instead of fooling around trying to find homes for cats with cancer.

*PETA just likes killing them, for no reason.

Why would that be? I’ve seen horsemeat for sale in French grocery stores, but it’s not any more popular there than, say, ox tails or veal brains are here in the U.S.

French people don’t tend to get too excited about what Americans eat, anyway. We have a (sometimes undeserved) reputation for being too fat, and eating too much junky processed food. They’d probably consider horsemeat an improvement for us.

What did you say, Frau Blücher?

Candy Cakes, not sure where you get off calling French people fat. Sure they have obese people as we do. Hardly relevant to the story at hand. What does the popularity of oxtail have to do with the French not eating veal brains? Ox tail is extremely popular here in south Texas. The french population here is negilgible so that theory is crap. Do you really think it’s ok to eat horsemeat? Barbaric sugar hips… simply barbaric. Do ya’ll throw a horse on the pit for Klan rallies where you live or something?

Well, Olivia, since you asked… the French love horse meat; more horse meat on the market will likely mean lower prices for a food they like. Sounds like exciting news for lovers of horse meat.

Anything else you need educated about or did you just post to be contrary?

That’s a bogus stereotype. Most French people don’t eat horsemeat. As I pointed out, you can find it for sale in big grocery stores (usually only two or three packages off in the corner, in my experience, as compared to shelves filled with beef, pork and chicken products), but it’s not a big seller. It’s kind of like that other bogus stereotype (which you no doubt believe, too)—-that French people all simply adore Jerry Lewis.

I’m amused, too, that you’d think French people would give a rip about what kind of meat Americans are selling or eating. Do YOU know or care how many people in Sweden, for example, like to eat barbecued pork rinds?

Never mind *that*, Olivia doesn’t believe it, so it didn’t happen.

Bringing up that it was published in the Daily Mail under a row of asterisks in 3..2..1

Funny, I don’t see where Ruben made any such comment. Care to C&P to what you are referring or were you just “confused” again?

After the steak they served me the other night, I’m pretty sure that the Fairview Heights IL Outback has been ignoring the ban all along. They need to rename the Outback special the Mr. Ed meal.
