Red faces in the Obama administration: Green cars not so green

by editor on June 17, 2011

Obviously, we exaggerate. Not about green cars not being green, but about red faces in the Obama administration. This bunch proved long ago that they are beyond being embarrassed by any of their actions.

But let’s get back to the green car myth with The Australian:

obama electric car

"It's for the environment" has joined "It's for the children" in the pantheon of plaintive liberal wails

Electric cars could produce higher emissions over their lifetimes than petrol equivalents because of the energy consumed in making their batteries, a study has found.

How is that possible? We’ve been told that electric cars would cure all our ills.

An electric car owner would have to drive at least 129,000km before producing a net saving in CO2. Many electric cars will not travel that far in their lifetime because they typically have a range of less than 145km on a single charge and are unsuitable for long trips. Even those driven 160,000km would save only about a tonne of CO2 over their lifetimes…

The study was commissioned by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, which is jointly funded by the British government and the car industry. It found that a mid-size electric car would produce 23.1 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime, compared with 24 tonnes for a similar petrol car. Emissions from manufacturing electric cars are at least 50 per cent higher because batteries are made from materials such as lithium, copper and refined silicon, which require much energy to be processed.

Electric cars. The vehicles we’ll all drive on the road to ruin.

Just wondering why you folks don’t research this stuff before you get all fired up.
The guys who did the study disagree with this bogus story. Don’t want to drive an EV? Then don’t. Just keep your facts straight.

Gee, you don’t think he’s touting their members owns products in that letter do you? (Called follow the money).

I also find it interesting there’s no mention about the CO2 emitted by all the coal and gas power plants that create the electricity to run these rolling turds. (Must have been “conveniently” omitted).

They’re also full of it on battery replacement. Most of the Prius’s I see on Craigslist note they had the battery replaced.

That letter is just another self-serving steaming pile of crap as far as I’m concerned.

US average grid emissions: 1.3 lbs CO2/kWh – Source EPA EGRID Website
Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt ~ 3 miles/kWh – Source EPA window stickers
Burn 1 gallon of gas = 19.8 lbs of CO2, plus roughly 25% for refining emissions
Battery warranty: 8 yr, 100,000 miles Nissan Leaf & Chevy Volt (you won’t replace the pack – individual cells may die and need to be replaced in 10 years)
Feel free to run the numbers.

First, I’m going to need the correct numbers. Burning one gallon of gas creates 19.8 pounds of CO2? I’m having a problem grasping that concept.

The truth about “green” is the only thing “green” about “”green is how much green it takes to keep “green” going.

1) As I have previously mentioned on another site, In Texas, you would be squashed trying to get on IH 35 with this, weaving in and out of the semis trying to enter the on ramp.
2) Worry less about developing stupid cars that are not any improvement over what we’ve got and go plant some trees. If they would quit allowing developers to clear cut acres of trees, we would have a better, natural handle on disposing of the excess CO2 plus enjoy the beauty, grace and SHADE of trees. That would provide nesting areas, food for some species, etc. It would be a win win!

I believe you have hit on two excellent points.
1. Anybody ignorant enough to buy-own-drive one of these turds deserves to be squashed by a semi.
2. Your perspective on the environment and clear cutting for development
is correct. In addition I would say the fact that that barney frank-chris dodd-bill klinton et al. totally screwed home financing which in turn led to the current housing glut; is another good reason to slow suburban sprawl.

” the energy consumed in making their batteries,” etc —

Jeebus Effin Xmas, did this dooshnozzle just figure that out? People with more than half a brain have been chortling about that for ages!

…. And you can’t tow a boat or a trailer with one those cars. I bet you feel the lag when its loaded with 4 people.

Yeah, but it just FEELS so good to pay thousands more for a stupid car that doesn’t provide any benefits for the extra money. That’s the nature of gummint spending the world over: Why Pay Less when you can get the same thing (maybe) for much, much, MUCH more money? The essence of liberalism.

Maybe that’s 1 reason why people are buying cars not made by UAW labor. About $1,800 off the top goes to covering UAW legacy costs for UAW made cars.

Danybhoy, you disappoint me. If I didn’t know better, I’d almost say “I bet you don’t have a reVolt parked in your driveway!” How heathen! (I don’t either, and to make matters worse, when I find one, with no one guarding it, I drag out my Anthony and pee on it.)

I drive a Mitsubishi Galant.

Much better choice! And when you go to the mall, you don’t have to drag a one mile extension chord, to try and swindle electricity from a vendor, so you can get home! a 40 mile range. You would think that oboma Motors would be embarrassed to offer something that stupid.

Well, let’s see. 145KM is about 90 miles. 45 mile one way drive. That’s more then enough to get you to the high speed rail station to take a trip to…OH SHIT!! IS THAT BORDEN CALIFORNIA??? HOT DAMN!!! My prayers are answered.

Even if there were a lower CO2 return, no-one has a solution as to how to safely dispose of millions of toxic batteries when they wear out. There is nothing “green” about electric/hybrid cars.

I seldom see reference to the “awful emissions” necessary just to make the electricity to charge these Sh*t Buckets…
