What could you and Tiger Woods have in common?

That’s the question asked on this poster at a mall in Southern California yesterday. That’s right. Yesterday.

LoveHateAdvertising (a cool new site run by one of our buddies and an occasional IHTM contributor) has the details:

Whatever it is, let’s hope it’s not contagious.

The captions almost write themselves. This ad used to be so innocent. So pedestrian. (It’s in an outdoor mall!)

Now because of circumstances beyond the advertiser’s control (Tiger’s lack of zipper control), the ad has taken on an unwanted double meaning.
It must be an old ad. It was up during the Masters tournament. It’s still up. (I just checked.)

By now, you’ve probably seen or heard about the controversial Nike commercial that ran during Tiger’s “comeback” at the Masters. A creepy back-from-the-dead subconscious confrontation by Tiger’s philandering father: “Did you learn anything, Tiger?”

Did Nike learn anything? Viral Tiger-Nike video mashups were everywhere within days. As of a week ago, there were 160 different YouTube spoofs.
Whatever the point of this headline was before Thanksgiving 2009 (Hey, I’ve had Lasik, whaddya know, we’ve got something in common!), the question is now in questionable taste. Which reminds me…

Have you heard the one about… ?

Not long ago, my 5th grader came up with his own Tiger joke:
Do you know why Nike didn’t drop Tiger? Because he was following their slogan – Just do it. (Cue laugh track.)

My son’s a good kid. Really.

He also came home from school with this one: What’s the difference between Santa Claus and Tiger Woods? Santa stops after three “ho’s”. (SFX: Rimshot.)

By the way, his teachers just went on strike today. But I don’t think there’s any connection.

Anyway… where were we? Oh, yeah.

Why is this Tiger Woods ad still running?

Let’s give the advertiser the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they forgot they have an ad up at this kiosk. Or TLC hasn’t found a new spokesperson yet. Or maybe they just can’t afford to create a new one.

One never knows. So just for kicks I called the optometrist office to ask. (I’ve blurred their name and phone number in the photo.)

The woman on the phone was a good sport. She said the ad is about three years old and they were just now getting a quote to replace it. Their office still gets calls from the ad.

I wondered whether customers ever make any funny comments when they call? The receptionist laughed (a lot) and said callers will sometimes chuckle knowingly and say, “So you still have Tiger up!”
