California do-gooders want to ban flat screen TVs

plasma_tvWe hate the media. You hate the media. But we love our TVs more than our wives. That’s why this story is so infuriating.

California regulators want to ban the sale of plasma and LCD TVs because “they use too much energy.” The new rules could cost the state up to $130 million in sales and income taxes annually. So if the greens get their way, they’ll drive the state even further into the red.

Sales of plasma and LCDs, which account for 90% of new TV sales, would be outlawed in California as soon as the rules go into effect.

In a really brilliant public relations move, they made this announcement just before the Super Bowl, the day when record numbers of Americans will be gathered around their new flat screen TVs.

By the way, we’re taking Arizona and the points.

Everything we do uses energy. Who decides how much is too much and what practical solution do they have for progress, commerce and the inherant rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
What is the agenda behind this desire to ban just about everything except breathing air?

Are you sure that California wants to ban sales of all LCD and plasma TVs in the state? Please point to that evidence, as I’d like to see it so I can make remarks on my own blog to share the outrage. Are you sure that instead the state of California isn’t mandating energy efficient LCDs, LEDs, LCoS, etc. to be sold within their borders, because that sounds like a more realistic policy to implement.

When did California ever have a realistic policy? Most of their policies have screwed the taxpayers of the state.

Realistic policy as in not implementing a “total ban” on LCDs and plasmas as the article headline suggests. A realistic policy such as requiring improved efficency but still permitting the TVs is understandable but a total ban is not. I’m skeptical of the attention grabbing claim of the headline that California is implementing a ban on plasma and LCD sets because the claim isn’t supported by facts.

There are actions that could be taken that would not burden manufacturers or consumers. Better films, brightness sensors, switching from CCFL to LED, and improved standby options can make this regulation a realistic possibility. We won’t be forced to buy 13″ CRTs because of this policy nor will anyone take your already purchased plasma, but industry will have to provide more efficient consumption improvements to what will be built.

Why can’t you all believe that Ca would ban something like this? This IS the state that recently voted to raise the price of food astronomically by requiring that chickens and cows be allowed to run free, can’t decide if yes mean yes (Prop 8), and is in the toilet financially because we have to finance our southern invaders. They want us to plug in our cars, and lightbulbs are evil! Ahhh, yes, CA can be trusted to lead the nation in stupid, and export that efficiently.
